Oral Health: A window to your overall health

Did you know that oral health can

offer clues about overall health?

Or that problems in the mouth can

affect the rest of the body? Under-

stand the connection between oral

health, overall health and what to

do for protection. Like many

areas of the body, the mouth is

teeming with bacteria, most

harmless. Normally the body's

natural defenses and good oral

health care, such as daily

brushing and flossing, can keep

bacteria under control. However,

without proper oral hygiene,

bacteria can reach levels that

might lead to tooth decay and gum

disease. Certain medicines like

painkillers, decongestants, and

antihistamines can reduce saliva

flow. Saliva washes away food

and neutralizes acids produced by

bacteria in the mouth, helping to

protect from microbial invasion or

overgrowth that might lead to

disease. Studies also suggest that

oral bacteria and the inflammation

associated with periodontitis,

might play a role in some diseases.

Certain diseases, such as diabetes

can lower the body's resistance to

infection, making oral health

problems more severe. Protect

your oral health by brushing,

flossing, eating a healthy diet,

replacing your toothbrush every 3

months or sooner if bristles are

frayed and schedule regular

checkups. Remember, taking care

of your oral health is making an

investment in your overall health.

Pool Sign-Up for Spring II Session, (May 9 - July 1) starts Monday, May 2. Please pick up registration slips at the front desk prior to sign up. Be sure all medical and waiver paperwork is up-to-date through July.

Culinary Comfort Care®.

Hospice volunteer and former executive chef George Mrus

(rhymes with bus) thinks food should be part of hospice

comfort care. In fact, he’s got a name for his kitchen-table

enterprise: Culinary Comfort Care®. He realized that even after a

patient seemed to have lost all connection to who or where they were,

their five senses still worked. “Why not food?” George thought.

Surely the smell, taste and communal activity of eating certain foods

would delight a hospice patient. If you have someone who might

benefit from this philosophy, come listen and learn from chef Mrus

Tuesday, April 19 at 9:30a. Chef Mrus will whip something up
