2 THE UNIVERSITY OF WAIKATO
Graduation is a special time for students and their families and I always enjoy being part of the celebrations. It’s important to acknowledge the hard work done by students, and the sacrifices often made by the students themselves, their parents and supporters, to ensure they succeed.
Today is a day for reflecting on your achievements before you begin the next phase in your life; perhaps you’re starting work, or have chosen to travel, or to take up further study. Whatever you have chosen, your University of Waikato
Students have been celebrating successful completion of their study since the first universities opened in Europe in the 12th century. Graduation is an important part of university life because of the way in which it combines celebration of scholarship, teaching and student achievement with acknowledgement of the history and long-established traditions of universities. Each institution has its own approach to recognising student achievement and its own variations of the traditional graduation ceremony reflecting local custom and circumstance.
Welcome
experience will contribute to your success, having prepared you to be challenged, creative and solutions-focussed. I advise you to embrace every opportunity that comes your way.
Please ensure you retain your links with this University and take every opportunity to reconnect with fellow alumni, wherever you may be in the world.
Rt Hon James Bolger ONZ Chancellor University of Waikato
I welcome students, friends and family to graduation for the University of Waikato. I know many of you have travelled a long way to be here to share this day. For graduands, I hope that your experience today will provide a happy conclusion to the eventful and fulfilling journey that you have taken from admission into the University to completion of your degree, and that you take away fond memories of your time at the University of Waikato.
Professor Neil Quigley Vice-Chancellor University of Waikato

4 THE UNIVERSITY OF WAIKATO
An Honorary Doctorate is the most prestigious award that the University of Waikato
can bestow. For their significant contribution to the University, the Waikato region
and the wider New Zealand community, the University is pleased to award the
following worthy recipients.
EMERITUS PROFESSOR ROY CRAWFORD CONFERRED 19 APRIL
Emeritus Professor Roy Crawford was the University of Waikato’s Vice-Chancellor for a decade, completing his term in December 2014. Emeritus Professor Crawford led the evolution of a strategic partnership with Bay of Plenty polytechnics, in Tauranga, Rotorua and Whakatane, and guided the early planning for the new campus development in Tauranga. He oversaw almost $100 million of building projects including the Maharaia building in Tauranga, and
the Student Centre and Law and Management building in Hamilton.
His research focus was mechanical and process engineering and he travelled the world to give lectures on his specialist subject and served on numerous committees and associations linked to the plastics industry. He has published nine books and more than 250 articles and been awarded more than a dozen international prizes and awards for his research.
EMERITUS BISHOP DENIS BROWNE CONFERRED 21 APRIL
Ordained in 1962, Emeritus Bishop Denis Browne has served as a priest in Auckland and Gisborne, and as Bishop of Auckland and Hamilton. He was a missionary priest in the Pacific Islands for several years from 1975, and in 1977 Pope Paul VI appointed him the third Bishop of the Cook Islands.
As Bishop of Hamilton he was committed to enhancing the
educational performance of the schools in his diocese. He has received several awards and accolades for his service, including receiving a Doctor of Divinity degree from the Vatican – an honorary degree denoting ordination as a bishop. In 2001 he was named a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to the community.
ARCHBISHOP SIR DAVID MOXON CONFERRED 21 APRIL
In 1993 Sir David Moxon became the youngest bishop of his generation when he was consecrated in Hamilton. Throughout his 20-year tenure as Bishop of Waikato, Sir David was committed to several social and political causes, and alongside Emeritus Bishop Denis Browne he supported the establishment of the Te Ara Hou Christian Social Services Village in Hamilton.
In 2006 he was elected Archbishop of the New Zealand dioceses – the seven dioceses that make up
Tikanga Pākehā of the Anglican Church of Aotearoa New Zealand and Polynesia, and then became a primate and Archbishop of this church in 2008. In 2013 he became the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Representative to the Holy See and director of the Anglican Centre in Rome. In 2014 he was appointed a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to the church and the community. He is also an Ambassador of the City of Hamilton.

Ceremonial Traditions
Pou Whenua
Elements of university graduation ceremonies have evolved from the
12th century when the first universities emerged in Europe.
The ceremonial carved Māori mace
being used in today’s graduation
ceremony represents the strong links
between the University and Māori.
The organisation of medieval universities was modelled on the established institutions of the day – the church, the monastery and the guild.
Latin was the language used by medieval scholars, and it is from Latin that the words ‘university’ and ‘degree’ are derived. The Latin term universitas means a guild or union, and universities started as a scholastic guild – a self-constituted community of teachers and scholars.
The word graduate comes from the Latin word gradus, which means step. Admission to study a bachelors degree was the first step taken towards completing a university education. The second step was to become a ‘master’. Masters were Master of Arts graduates whose degrees licensed them to teach. The Chancellor, an officer of the cathedral, originally granted teaching licences.
CEREMONIAL ROBES AND ACADEMIC DRESS
In the Middle Ages the corporate existence of universities was recognised and sanctioned by civil or ecclesiastical authority. The regalia worn by graduates and
In 1965, just a year after the University of Waikato was established, Kīngitanga head Koroki invited founding University of Waikato Chancellor and Hamilton Mayor Denis Rogers, along with 20 University of Waikato graduates, to Tūrangawaewae Marae in Ngaruawahia.
There he presented the fledgling institution with the carved taonga to be used as ceremonial mace. The piece was carved by master carver Piri Poutapu, who established a carving school at Tūrangawaewae in 1932. When not being used, the taonga sits in pride of place at the head of the University Council chamber.
university staff today reflect this mix of medieval governance. Robes worn by the Chancellor resemble those worn by the Lord Chancellor of England. Graduates and academic staff wear gowns similar to the dress of medieval clergy. Hoods are also fashioned on an everyday medieval garment, although the coloured lining was a later addition to indicate the wearer’s university and degree.

53GRADUATION APRIL 2016
The University of Waikato
The University of Waikato’s motto is Ko Te Tangata – For the people. It’s an appropriate maxim for a university that was established by a group of people in the Waikato determined that the region should have its own university and reinforces our belief that people are central to the University and are its most valued resource.
In its first year, there were 181 enrolments. Fifty-one years later there are about 12,500 students, and 2,000 of them come from overseas. The University is committed to delivering a world-class education and research portfolio, and pursuing strong international links to advance knowledge. Staff endeavour to keep their teaching future-focused and play an active part in global research.
Since 1988 the University has had a presence in the Bay of Plenty, partnering polytechnics there to offer
a range of qualifications, and more recently planning has begun for a new University of Waikato campus in the Tauranga CBD.
THE CAMPUS
The Hamilton campus covers 65 hectares and is arguably the most attractive university campus in New Zealand, with gardens and grounds that attract a range of sports teams for practice and tournaments, and which provide a venue for many community activities.
There is an ongoing programme of building development and refurbishment on campus. The most recent construction is the new Law and Management building that opened this year. The building has been designed with sustainable features such as a living lawn roof, natural ventilation and glazed corridor walls for natural lighting. It also has a fully-equipped court room.
NEW OPPORTUNITIES
We welcomed a new Vice-Chancellor in 2015, and with Professor Neil Quigley’s arrival there has been a complete curriculum review, some important new staff appointments, and an increased drive to ensure university study becomes accessible to a wider range of students.
At the beginning of this year we launched Te Ara ki Angitū: Pathways to Excellence – a programme designed with four secondary schools in South Waikato to widen the pathway to university study by alleviating the barriers of affordability and transport and installing quality support and guidance. Forty students began the programme in 2016.
A university’s reputation is important for attracting students and staff, from New Zealand and overseas. International rankings are based on teaching, research, citations, industry outcomes, innovation and international outlook. The University of Waikato was ranked 338 in the world by the QS (Quacquarelli Symonds Limited) World University Rankings 2015. This was a climb in the rankings of more than 60 places from 2014 and ‘this year QS ranked 11 of our subjects in the top 200 in the world.
Times Higher Education ranks the University of Waikato 61st out of 100 “most international” universities in the world, reflecting the truly global education that is received by students studying at Waikato. It also takes into account the ratio of international staff and students on campus and the proportion of research papers being generated with an international co-author.
