Don’t you just love a new car? That new car smell. The brand new interior. The perfectly painted and detailed exterior. If you have ever purchased a new car with only a few miles on the odometer, then you know what I’m talking about. You can tell the new car owners. They’re the ones who park hundreds of feet from other cars (especially in grocery store parking lots.) They are on high alert for errant shopping carts, other people’s car doors, and the continued threat of possible damage—no matter how slight. If driving on the highway, the new car driver skillfully avoids dump trucks, semi trailers, and any area where stones, sand, or de-bris could fly up and damage their brand new ride. Then one day it happens. They dis-cover their first door ding. Or a road stone chip. Or, heaven forbid, a scratch that can’t easily be touched up. Drat! Welcome to the world of having a USED car, my friend. Frankly, even if you could avoid any signs of use on that new car of yours, there is this thing called “depreciation.” Depreciation happens as soon as you drive your shiny, new car off the dealer’s lot. You may have paid $32,000 for that wonderful new vehicle, but once it leaves the lot, bingo. It’s now lost thousands of dollars if you would try to sell it. After all, it’s a “pre-owned, used car.” The sad truth is that nothing in this world stays “factory fresh” for very long. It doesn’t matter if it’s a car, truck, boat, snowmobile, or even an appliance. Things get used, things depreciate, and things break down. It’s just a fact of life. This is true for you and me as well. In fact, as Christians, we know that we were NEVER perfect or “spiritually new,” even when we took our first breath. The Psalmist tells us, “Behold, I was formed in iniquity; and in sin did my moth-er conceive me.” (Psalm 51:5) In other words, as soon as we were conceived in our mother’s womb, we were already sin-ful. We were already scratched, dinged,

and chipped. From the get-go, we were depreciated to nothing. In fact, if not for God’s grace and mercy, we would have remained His enemies throughout life and eternity. Yet, in this Easter season, and the first hints of long awaited spring, we are once again reminded about the “newness of life.” The apostle Paul once wrote to his Christian friends in Corinth, Greece, these words: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come; The old has gone, the new is here!” As baptized people of God, our sins have been forgiven, washed away, and forgotten. We have been regenerated, born again, made new. Through the re-demptive work of Christ, we are 100% new, holy, righteous, and perfect. That’s great news. That’s Gospel. Do we still sin? Unfortunately, yes. Do we still get dinged up in life? We do. This side of heaven, we will still pick up chips and road stones, scratches, and dings. Some of us older ones, even start to rust! We never depreciate or lose value to God. He loves us despite our sins and shortcomings. By virtue of the Cross of Je-sus, we are made new every day. Every day. Imagine that! Our challenge is to now live as the perfect and redeemed people that we al-ready are in our Father’s sight. Our chal-lenge is to honor Him and thank Him for His grace, by living as He would want us to live. Become what you already are. Things in this world don’t stay new for long. Thanks be to God, when He sees us through the filter of the Cross, we remain perfect and new in His sight forever. May the joy and celebration of Easter (He is Risen! He is Risen Indeed!) contin-ue to remind us of the victory that is ours in Christ…and that in Jesus, the new has come and the old has gone!

See you next Sunday!Pastor Jeff

Do you like to run? I don’t..yet. May-be it will grow on me. I DO, however, like being an active dad who can keep up with his kids. So for now, I run to stay healthy. I needed something creative to keep my focus away from the task of running, but would also encourage me to contin-ue running. That’s where I found it: the Zombies, Run! App. It’s an app that tells a story where you are the main character who has survived a zombie apocalypse and as you run, you pick up valuable supplies for your settlement. The longer you run, the more supplies you pick up and the more of the story you hear. Your phone tracks your distance based on your movement. Then sometimes…wait for it…you’ll hear the groaning of zombies with the warning: Zombies, Run!!! You have to in-crease your speed by 20% and hold it for a short length of time to get away. Yes, it’s a sneaky way of encouraging interval train-ing. Having been immersed in the story (and your music playlist) you really want to run away from those decaying hands! Zombies are something of a phenom-enon within our culture. Millions of ‘Dead’ fans tune in to The Walking Dead which is in its 6th season of Rick Grimes surviving the zombie apocalypse. World War Z was a big budget hit in the theaters with Brad Pitt as its star. Church members joke at Costco that their gigantic 48 pack of toi-let paper is in preparation for the zombie apocalypse. So, zombies are a thing now, but what is a zombie? A zombie has many tell-tale characteristics: they used to be people and even though they’re effectively dead inside, they have the characteris-tics of being alive. They eat, they seem to breathe (since they groan), but most im-portantly they are … fiction. Or are they? I wonder if this is something of an in-sight into the way that Paul addressed the Christians in Rome. These Roman Chris-tians had once believed in the resurrection of Jesus for them. They were once alive in Christ. Slowly but surely those Chris-tians began to deaden themselves by

how they acted in life. Romans 6:12 says that these Roman Christians were supposed to “Let not sin there-fore reign in your mortal body to make you obey its passions.” If sin was reigning in them and the “wages of sin is death” than perhaps these Christians appeared a bit like spiritual … zombies. They were alive(ish), but becoming very dead inside as they allowed their sin to go unchecked and un-repented. They were becoming zombified. Paul was trying to teach them that they needed to consider themselves dead to sin, but most importantly alive to God in Christ Jesus (6:11). How could those Christians know if they were alive or dead? Would it be based on if they felt saved enough? That can’t be. Feelings are great, but they’ve definitely lead believers astray in the past. It definitely couldn’t be based on whether or not they worked hard enough to be saved. So where could these believers go to find out if they were alive or deadened zombies? They had to look outside of them-selves, because that’s where the Gospel comes from. Not their feelings. Not their work. They were to hear where Jesus promised to meet them with new life. Paulbegins by pointing out that baptism was the first place they were given their new life in Jesus. Paul says it this way in vv. 3-5 “Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. Have you ever wondered if you were truly alive in Christ or just another zombie walking along who looked like a Christian?

Follow Paul’s advice. Look to your bap-tism. This is the point in time where Jesus first said that He loves you. The blessing of baptism is that it happened publicly – other people witnessed that moment of life. Other people can definitely agree that you were baptized. What if you were like those Roman Christians who were bap-tized but then allowed sin and death to zombify them? How do you know you’re not turning into one? The Spirit’s work is to draw you to the places, again that begin outside of you, where Jesus promises to meet you in new life. For believers those places are from other believers who can speak the life giving words of Jesus to you. Finally the Lord’s Supper. These are the definitive places a believer can go to know that they are not deadened zombies. Jesus died on that cross 2,000 years ago to win salvation and forgiveness for you and new life for you. He chose to deliver that gift to you in the here and now through the instru-ments He wants to use dear DR believer. Here are a few verses that speak of Jesus promising to forgive sin or gift faith to a be-liever using His select instruments) : Baptism (1 Peter 3:21 Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ) The Lord’s Supper (Matthew 26:27-28 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.)

His spoken Word of Gospel (Romans 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.) If you’re reading this you may never question your faith. You may never ques-tion that you are alive in Christ. Praise God for His goodness in your life! There are some people, some people that you know and are probably related to. They’re not un-churched. They’re de-churched. They’ve exchanged their new life in Christ to be ruled by their death in sin. They’re the spiritual equivalent of zombies. Rath-er than running away from them, like the running app might encourage you to do…run toward those family members. Use the tools that Jesus wants His people to use in order to deliver His grace and Gos-pel to them. Why? Because in heaven…there are no zombies! Just the people of Jesus liv-ing with Him in His kingdom. When I’m finally there – I will have a glorified body that doesn’t break down or get sick. Which means…I probably won’t have to run any-more to stay in shape.

God bless you! – Pastor Seth

A special thanks goes out once again to our DivorceCare and GriefShare leadership teams! We have been greatly blessed with teams of caring, compassionate, and dedicated people who spent countless hours praying, preparing, and working together beginning in January – all in order to min-ister effectively to others who have experienced separation, divorce, or are grieving the loss of a loved one. We also want to thank those who are currently serving on our Single and Parenting team. Their dedication and commit-ment to offering support for those who are facing the day to day challenges of being a single parent continues to be an added blessing to our Sunday morning Bible Study hour. Because of these support groups, Divine Redeemer con-tinues to be a place of ongo-ing healing and guidance for a growing number of people in our community. • 2016 Spring DivorceCare Team: Charles Luebke, Michelle Miller, and Patti Sobchak • 2016 Spring GriefShare Team: Doris Egan, Don and Diane Henckel, & Jim Butzlaff • 2016 Spring Single & Parenting Team: Doug Mueller and Amy Witt As we look ahead to our fall sessions, please feel free to call or email Pastor Kurt if you are interested in joining one of our teams, or if you would like to attend DivorceCare, GriefShare, or Single & Parenting.

“And Jesus came and said to them, “All au-thority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Fa-ther and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teach-ing them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” ~ Matthew 28:18-20 The Great Commission of Jesus Christ is what drives POBLO’s desire to share the Gos-pel message with the nations located right here in our own front yard. As the world becomes more globally connected and the demograph-ics in the U.S. continue to become more cul-turally diverse, we see a key opportunity to be a witness to Muslims, Hindus, and Sikhs who are searching for the Truth. Many of the ref-ugees that POBLO serves fled their country because of political or religious persecution. Now in the U.S., they have the freedom to learn about and prac-tice Christianity with-out fear. The growing communities of Mus-lims, Hindus, and Sikhs across the U.S. are a mission field ripe for harvesting. POBLO’s missions work consists primarily of missionary training, church plant-ing, and grassroots evangelism through Bible studies and one-on-one conversations with those interested in exploring the Christian faith or learning more about Jesus. The fields are ripe for harvest (John 4:35) right here in the U.S., and we are responding. Here in Wiscon-sin, there are more than 250,000 immigrants in Wisconsin—nearly 5% of the state’s popu-lation. The majority are from Asian and Latino countries, including Iraq, Somalia, and Laos. Wisconsin boasts the third largest Hmong population in the U.S., many of which came as political refugees from Laos in the 1980s and

1990s. Laotian Hmongs are the largest ethnic group in the state. More than 4.5% of regis-tered voters in Wisconsin are immigrants or children of immigrants. In our state, missionar-ies Praveen Manuel and Ebou Faye engage in evangelism and community outreach among immigrants and refugees primarily from South Asia and North Africa.

Praveen and Priya Manuel

Ebou Faye There are three International Friendship Centers in Wiscon-

sin, where volunteers provide English and sewing classes as a way to reach out in the community and connect with new Americans. Missionaries distribute food, clothing, and household items to at-need refugee families and provide refugee resettlement assistance. They also engage in street evangelism and provide Bible studies and discipleship for new Christians. If you would like more information on POB-LO International Ministries, feel free to check out their website at www.poblo.org. Thanks again for your ongoing support!

Just as fall turns to winter and winter to spring in some ar-eas of the world, we experience changes in our life that may affect the way we look or feel about ourselves and others. Yet there is no change in our age or physical appearance or life that can alter the underly-ing truth: Through the Spirit of God within we are ageless and free from limitations. We are a living expression of God’s love and life. Young and young in spirit, we welcome each moment as an opportunity to find new ways to express our divine nature. God’s love in us frees us from the limitations of the past and inspires us to live joyously now. Like new buds in the spring, we are born anew each day. We are ready to follow where spirit leads. We are ageless and free. Many plans for fundraisers are in the works for OCC from Parades to Culvers to the Pig-gly Wiggly Brat Shack this year. You can all be part of it. We will be having a meeting Tuesday, April 19 at Noon at Culvers. So come and enjoy lunch or just some ice cream. We are collecting bars of soap and wash cloths in the month of April.

I  have  always  been  fascinated  by  the  different  life  stages  of  the  Monarch  butterfly.    They  start  as  these  small,  striped  caterpillars  and  basically  all  they  do  is  eat  milkweed  plants.    Then,  miraculously,  they  just  “know”  when  to  hang  upside  down  and  form  a  chrysalis.    While  in  that  state,  it  appears  that  nothing  is  happening  until  the  colors  begin  to  change  and  then  the  Monarch  emerges.    What  a  transformation!        Some  of  you  may  feel  like  a  caterpillar,  just  limping  along  through  life,  or  you  may  feel  like  a  chrysalis…just  kind  of  dead  inside.    I  have  good  news  for  you!    Jesus  wants  to  transform  you  into  a  beautiful  butterfly  that  can  fly  with  grace  and  beauty.    Take  your  burdens,  sins,  and  failures  to  HIM  and  let  Him  make  you  a  new  creation!      Therefore,  if  anyone  is  in  Christ,  the  new  creation  has  come:  The  old  has  gone,  the  new  is  here!  2nd  Cor.  5:7

Divine Redeemer hosted a powerful new event on March 21, 22, 23 called Footsteps to the Cross. The event was best described as a guided, interactive walk-through for adults and children of all ages. All 280 guests and members felt, saw, and heard what Christ did as he walked his last steps to the cross. They nailed a nail to a cross, touched and held a crown of thorns and a whip, listened to soldiers gamble for Jesus’ clothing and sandals, tasted sour wine, encountered the weeping women of Jerusalem as well as Si-mon’s sons who experienced their dad’s love for the Lord as he carried Jesus’ cross for him along the way. There were a total of 10 stations of His footsteps to the cross guided by part of the pastoral team (Pastor Seth and Pastor Kurt) and Mike Oldenburg.

A special thank you goes out to all those who helped make this event such a huge suc-cess: Mary Kuehl, Cheryl and Jerry Maas, Kathy and Tom Ziska, Catherine Debroux, Amy Bronner, Doris Egan, Reid Brueser, Dan Gall, Debbie and Joel English, Bill and Lori Pollock, Ginny Braun, Jackie Scheck, Sue Koepke, Emily, Samantha and Ruth Stern-emann, Terry Williams, Phil Gray, Dee Sow-elles, Karen and Jeff Lippert, Claire Robinson, Andy Kroemer, Kyle Kramer, Jackson Bowen, Chuck Howard, Mike Oldenburg, Pastor Seth, Pastor Kurt, Pastor Jeff, Terri Anderson, Jim Suchocki and Ed Eldridge. Footsteps to the Cross will return, as it will be part of a 3-year rotation for like Lenten events. If you missed it this year, be sure to catch it next time.

D.eaR. Diary...

The mission of Divine Redeemer Lutheran School in partnership with parents is...

providing all students with a highquality, Christ-centered education while nurturing and equipping them to meet life’s challenges and opportunities as

faithful servants of Jesus Christ.

Let’s be honest… this news either “strikes fear and apprehension in your heart”, “you are ambivalent”, or you are “jumping out of your socks at the great news”! For years we have all heard the strug-gles and consequences of schools that have joined choice programs such as Milwaukee or Racine Choice. Those against these programs point out schools in which the culture has been altered, administrators are buried under “red tape”, or students seem to be “lost in the shuf-fle.” For those who feel it is their civil duty to support such programs, they will tell you family stories where these programs have “changed lives”, saved students, and opened up a new “mission field”. So in the midst of such discrep-ancies, why has Divine Redeemer Lutheran School become involved in something so con-troversial? Well, here are the facts: • The Wisconsin Parental Choice Program (WPCP) is not the Milwaukee or Racine Choice Program and it comes with different eligibility re-quirements, regulations, procedures, etc. • Divine Redeemer Lutheran School has elected to participate in the program with a lim-ited number of seats available in grades 4 Year Old Kindergarten through 8th Grade. This in-tentional designation of limited seats simplifies the program during this initial start-up year. • Participation in this program continues the mission of Divine Redeemer Lutheran School in offering exceptional Christian academics to anyone regardless of personal family income. Jesus commanded that we “let the little children come unto him..,” without reservation! • By offering eligible families the opportu-nity to participate in the WPCP, it will free up additional financial aid funds for more families

that might have a financial need that does not meet the WPCP requirement. • Families applying for WPCP will be indic-ative of the demographic families already re-siding in the Lake Country area and therefore will not change the strong family culture that Divine Redeemer Lutheran School is known for. Only families that reside outside of the city of Milwaukee or outside of the Racine Unified School District and meet the eligibility require-ments can apply for the Wisconsin Parental Choice Program. • Participation in the WPCP continues the many opportunities of the school for outreach into the community. School Principal, Michael Oldenburg, strongly supports the program by saying…”I was always against Choice because I had heard that it had changed the culture and climate of some of our schools and that par-ents could have their children opt out of reli-gion classes. When I had the opportunity to sit down with Terry Brown, Vice President of School Choice Wisconsin, he changed my opinion completely. He helped me to realize that the demographics of the Lake Country area are such that our culture and climate will not change. More importantly, because our faith is integrated into all subjects, parents who want their children to opt out of classes where religion is included would have to opt out of all classes. We just would not be a fit for anyone not wanting religious instruction. Terry further pointed out that by offering Choice, we may be able to provide a Christian education to someone who may not normally be able to afford it without giving them tuition assistance which then can be used for others.”

What? Divine Redeemer Lutheran School is Participating in the Wisconsin

Parental Choice Program?

DR Parental Choice Program continued... The Wisconsin Parental Choice Program becomes a win-win for everyone! At the heart of the issue is the fact that we are all called to be “disciples of men”. The possibility of the

school positively impacting the faith of more students who are seeking great academics, surrounded by the saving grace of Jesus, be-comes a very exciting prospect!

School Trip to Washington D.C. Proves Both Educational and Fun The seventh and eighth grade students of Divine Redeemer Lutheran School traveled to Washington D.C. this past March as part of their school trip. Every year opportunities are offered for students to help off-set the expense of the trip by fundraising. Often enough fund-raising is secured that even allows parents to join in on the trip as chaperones. The week-long field trip included a full schedule of tour-ing places such as the National Monuments,

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Jamestown and Williamsburg, the Smithsonian Museums, the White House and many other important sites. The students were responsible to takephotographs of the places they toured so they could make a photo-album for a school project on their return. Not only will these albums be a great learning tool but will also be a great way to save memories of a great school trip!
