Pastor’s Corner   Hallelujah! Praise the Lord from the

heavens; praise him in the heights…

Praise him, heaven of heavens, and youwaters above the heavens. -- Psalm 148,

    (verses 1, 4) –  5th Sunday of Easter

Writer and theologian Diana Butler Bass says that

the question, “Where is God?” is what drove her to re-

search and write her latest book, Grounded . Bass cor-

rectly notes that the writers of the Bible had the idea of a

3-tiered universe: heaven, earth, below the earth. As thePsalm cited above shows, ancient near Eastern people be-

lieved that above the dome of the sky there were waters.

We 21st-century people know better. We know that

the universe is incredibly vast. To the ancients, God was

in the heavens above. But we know that it doesn’t make

sense to think of God as “above” and hell as “below.”

Hence, Bass asks the question, “Where is God?”

Perhaps the better question is, “Where is God

NOT?” That one is simple to answer: There is no place

where God is not. God is everywhere. And, that being

the case, everything we see and know and feel is under

the care of God. There is no secular world, as my bumper

sticker says. Everything is potentially sacred, holy. Be-

cause everything is under the eye of God.

So let us praise God this Eastertide, rejoicing in allthat our Almighty God has made. Alleluia!

    From the Deacon

    INTO THE DARKNESS

Deacon Rebecca  On Saturday, March 19, Phil and I took part

in Earth Hour. It’s an annual one-hour event inwhich people voluntarily turn off their non-essential household lights in an effort to promote

positive environmental actions. We had partici- pated in the past, so we knew what to expect. Ienjoyed digging out my “non-electrical” devices(i.e. candles, oil lamps) and using them for this

    event.

This year felt different for me, though. The darkness seemed heavier and thedimly lit room did not offer its familiar coziness. This feeling drew my thoughts tothe darkness itself. Without sufficient lighting, my mind was free to drift off to a

place of silent stillness and sadness. It reminded me of my grief and recent loss.Darkness.

With Good Friday approaching, I was thinking of the darkness of the tomb inwhich Jesus was to be laid. Before we can celebrate the good news of Jesus’ resur-

rection, we have to pass through the silence and darkness of the Good Friday tomb.We know that Easter morning will come in the same sense as when we experiencethe intensity of a severe storm. We know the crack of thunder, the flashes of light-ning, and the dark clouds won’t last forever and that calm will be restored as the

storm continues to move away from us. We just have to ride it out.

In John 14:23, Jesus says: “Those who love me will keep my word, and my

Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.”

What I hear deep in this verse is the assurance that no matter what happens inlife, God will not abandon us. Even when we are left feeling numbed by life’s

events and tragedies, and we are passing through a daunting darkness, Jesus prom-ises to be with us. We don’t want to travel through those shadowy and scary places,

but sometimes we aren’t given choices as to which path we have to walk. We have

to keep moving forward along the poorly lit pathway until the time has past. Thenwe can finally switch on the lights and hopefully we will see that we weren’t travel-

    ing alone after all.

    Deacon’s vacation

Deacon Rebecca will be on vacation from Wednesday, April 6, through Monday,April 11, 2016.

    FROM THE KIDS’ SPACE

Throughout Lent, we talked about the importance of forgiveness. The children madetags to show example of forgiveness in their lives and then they wove them all to-

    gether.

For Easter, we made “stained-glass crosses” to celebrate!

    Earthy Soul by Kathleen McDonald

    Hyper-Pollinated Hyacinths

Those of us who walked in

early to St. Francis’ sanctuary on

    Holy Saturday for the Easter

    Vigil were overwhelmed by beau-

    tiful displays of flowers assem-

bled and arranged by the talented

members of the Altar Guild. We

were amazed by the beauty of the

flowers, by their depth of colors,

their artistic placement in just the

right light and by the way they were set to call attention to the altar, the lectern and

    the music area. Awesome!!

We were also overwhelmed by the allergens in the air. Those flowers were so

fresh, so vibrantly alive that their pollen was popping out! It took me a few mo-

ments of itchy eyes and light coughing to realize that church flowers the way we do

them make a wonderful metaphor for the members and the mission of St. Francis.

Not that each of us is all that pretty and vibrant. Not that we’re allergic to oneanother. Here’s what I mean.

The Easter flowers in the picture at the top of this article are very nice. Pro-

fessionally done, they include all the Easter/spring regulars and a few I don’t recog-

nize. These would be lovely in any church and are probably what we would have at

St. Francis’ if that’s how we were spending our (limited) budget these days. The key

phrase here is in any church.  The flowers in the top picture will stay in the church

for a week, have their water changed, and probably last through the next Sunday in

Eastertide. All of their loveliness will stay in the church building.St. Francis’ flowers were donated one plant at a time by members of the con-

gregation. Altar Guild shopped for the best price on the best plants, and they artfully

arranged them. The plants offered silent worship to their creator, and added joy to

our own worship. Then, after three services with incense and asperging, one Easter-

Egg hunt, one Easter feast featuring more flowers, the members of the congregation

took the flowers home to plant in their own gardens or to share with friends.

    (Continued from page 9)

And isn’t that a metaphor for what we do every week? We come together to

worship God. We gather around the Word, the Table and the music, sharing the

prayers and actions that offer our love to God and we share God’s love with one an-other. But at the end of the service, the coffee, the Adult Forum, we take ourselves

home. We re-root ourselves with the power of love we have just shared, and then we

share that love with our families, neighbors, and colleagues.

    Isn’t that how we’re helping

to build the Kingdom of God?

“Faith under Construction” The campaign to fund St. Francis’ church building, “Faith under Construc-

tion,” is underway. During Sunday worship in April you’ll hear from parishioners

about why they are committed to sacrificial giving to the building fund. Also this month you’ll receive a brochure and a letter with a Commitment

Card. Please prayerfully consider your 3-year commitment to building a church

home for St. Francis’. You’ll receive an invitation to a brunch following 10:15

a.m. worship on Sunday, May 1. During that service we’ll turn in our Commit-

ment Cards and celebrate with good food and fellowship.

The Diocese is funding the difference between what we raise through “Faith

under Construction” and the cost of the building. God has blessed us more bounti-

fully than we could have imagined. Let’s pass on those blessings by raising as

much money as we possibly can through “Faith under Construction.”

    Saturday, May 7th,1:00 - 4:00 p.m.

St. Francis’ loves to party with our neighbors, especially when it involves our pets and warm weather. Eureka’s annual Pet Parade will surely be more fun in May

than it ever was in February or March! If you want to enter your pet in the parade,

you can pre-register ($5 per pet) by calling the Eureka Chamber of Commerce at

636-938-6062. Or you can register the morning of the parade.

This year’s Pet Parade and celebration will include Pet Blessings by our own

pet-loving Pastor, and free St. Francis’ medals to give away to neighbors and pets.

With or without your pet, join us on May 7th for fun with Fido and Fluffy. If

you can, please wear your St. Francis’ t-shirt or jacket.

St. Francis’ Ministries: In the parish

    In the world

    In the Diocese

The Task Force for the Hungry

One of the advantages of being part of a

diocese is that people across the areas who

have similar interests in mission can work to-

gether, sharing ideas, pooling resources, work-

ing together as the body of Christ within East-

ern Missouri. The Task Force for the Hungry

is a group within our diocese who works in ex-

actly that way, and St. Francis’ is a part of that group.

The Diocesan Task Force for the Hungry is growing in several areas that

work to minister to the hungry:

    * speak and act on behalf of hungry people,

    * fund food ministries,* raise awareness about hunger and poverty issues,

    * serve as a resource to food ministries within the Diocese of Missouri.

The food pantries and projects they support operate on a shoestring, but are

on the front lines in fighting hunger and homelessness. Their work is to support

these groups by providing money that helps keep them viable.

It is exciting to know how many parishes and missions in our diocese have

the same passion as we do for hunger ministry. Many have or participate in a food

pantry program as we do. Several other parishes also have gardens where they

grow food for the hungry. Some participate actively in the annual Eden Seminary

walk to end hunger. If you would like to

know more about the work of the Task Force

for the Hungry, check out their web page or

talk to Barbi Click or Kathleen McDonald.

Working together, we can do more to

eradicate hunger and to feed the hungry than

    we can do alone.
