From the Desk of Father Jon

Why We Call the Feast of Feasts - PASCHA

…Pascha, the Lord’s Pascha…we hear this chanted with joy to the glory of God!

When we, as Orthodox Christians, celebrate the life-giving Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ, we call it

PASCHA! But does everyone in the other Christian churches call it Easter? Glad you asked. There is great

debate over the origin of the word Easter. Many scholars believe that the term goes all the way back to Baby-

lonians time (Easter/Ishatar). Many have spoken that the term Easter originates from German pagan practices

of early centuries (Saxon – Eostre). From our Orthodox tradition comes the sources of the Venerable Bede

from England (673-735 A. D.). He identified Eostre as one whose festivals were celebrated in the month giv-

en her name.

“Eosturmanath has a name which is now translated “Paschal month,” and which was once called after a god-

dess of theirs named Eostre, in whose honor feasts were celebrated in that month. Now they designate the

Paschal season by her name, calling the joys of the new rite by the time-honored name of the old observance.”

(answersingenisis.org)

Thus, having identified how the term Easter came to be in use, it best to go back to our Orthodox Tradition

and roots and explore why we refer to the Resurrection of Jesus Christ as Pascha. When the 70 translators of

the Old Testament were commissioned by the Ptolemy King of Egypt, Philadelphus, in the third century B.C.

to translate the Hebrew Scriptures into Greek, the scholars translated the Hebrew word for Passover “Pesach”

into Greek as Πάσχα (Pascha). The great story of the deliverance of the Hebrew people from slavery under

Pharaoh in Egypt is remembered during our Orthodox Christian Holy Week. The passage in Exodus refers to

the Passover of the angel of death over the households of the Hebrews that have the blood of the lamb painted

upon their doorposts. (Exodus 12:1-13:16) This passage which is read every Holy Friday is a direct parallel

to the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ. Clearly, the Lord made sure that he was there in Jerusalem for the

Passover. He was referred to by St. John the Baptist as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

Thus, blood of the Lamb of God was shed upon the wood of the Cross for our salvation on the Friday of the

Passover. The Sanhedrin made sure that the body of Jesus was removed from the Cross and placed in a tomb

prior to sundown so that they could keep the Passover of the Jews. Jesus knew what was to come and yet

with agony said in prayer in the garden of Gethsemane, “Nevertheless, not My will, but Thy will be done.”

The authorities in Jerusalem witnessed the earthquake, the darkening of the sun, the curtain of the Temple be-

ing torn in two, the bodies of the saints of old risen, and they still did not believe. Yet, we know the great

providence of God, that on the third day He arose from the dead and appeared to the myrrh bearing women.

Thus, it is fitting and right to always and with great love refer to the Feast of Feasts and Festival of Festivals,

the life-giving Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, as PASCHA, the Christian Passover from

death to life in Christ!

Καλό Πάσχα και` Καλή Ανάσταση!

Communications/Technology Alexandros Theodoropoulos

(With a personal comment)

We would like to remind all of our parishioners that

have internet access to visit our Online Multimedia

Gallery that contains a great number of photos as well

as videos from our various parish life events. You may

access our Online Gallery on our website by following

the Multimedia Gallery link on the left pane of the

home page. The photos can also be accessed directly

through our Picassa web album at

http://picasaweb.google.com/stnicholasgoc and the

videos through our church’s YouTube channel at

http://www.youtube.com/user/stnicholasgoc . Among

a variety of recent content additions, videos of our Ro-

miosini and Zoyra dance group performance at this

year’s HDF (Hellenic Dance Festival) in Charlotte NC

have also been posted.

While on the HDF topic, I would like to share a per-

sonal note. I would like to start with congratulating

both of our groups for putting their best effort and de-

livering great performances! I had the opportunity to

watch both groups closely and I can definitely attest to

the fact that our dance director, Zaharoula, and all the

dancers worked very hard over the past months to pre-

pare for the event. Our Romiosini group, in particular,

had to go through a number of challenges during all

that time, however, under Zaharoula’s leadership, the

dancers managed to persevere, overcome all the diffi-

culties and eventually reach the end of their journey

performing with their heart, winning in this way the

real prize also in the hearts of all of us watching them

at HDF. It should further be noted that this was the

first time ever that any of our groups was singing and

dancing at the same time for two of their dances, for

which our Romiosini dancers were so excited! There

was one thing I personally asked them to do right be-

fore each of their two performances … “to show to

everybody that Wilmington not only knows how to

dance but Wilmington can also dance and sing while

performing” … And they delivered since, for their

singing as well as their great enthusiasm and “Kefi” in

their dancing, they gave a strong message by also win-

ning the Folk Expression award! Regardless, there are

no words to describe how moved all of us were after

their performances as we watched these children of

our community accomplishing something like that for

the first time! And as far as I am concerned, I couldn’t

be any prouder of them … Thus, parishioners of St.

Nicholas, you can be proud of these children and rest

assure that they represented you well!

On another note, it is evident that our parish life has

become much richer over the last years with a grow-

ing number of events and activities. Although this is

certainly a blessing, it could also present some chal-

lenges in the effort of our Communications ministries

to promote and inform our parishioners as well as the

rest of the world about all these parish life events of

ours. For this reason, I would like to focus here on two

items that can help address these challenges.

We would like to have your photos and videos! In

case any of you has photos and videos from our

various parish life events, please consider sharing

them with our Communications Chair and our

church office using the email addresses listed at

the end of this article. We are trying to collect all

these items for our publications and online media.

We would like to use this opportunity to extend

special Thanks to all of you that have contributed

media content so far!

Online Calendar. It is evident that our parish cal-

endar is updated frequently and, as a result, the

calendars in our printed publications (Sunday Bul-

letin, monthly newsletter), although useful since

they offer a layout of events for the week or

month, might not stay up to date until the next is-

sue of the publication and this might also result in

some confusion. I would like to remind and stress

here that the official and most updated calendar is

our online one that is posted on our website at

http://www.stnicholaswilmington.org/ParishCalen

dar.html . All changes/additions are posted on our

online calendar dynamically so this should be used

as a reference when possible. Furthermore, in or-

der to better serve our parishioners that do not

have internet access, in addition to the calendar

versions in our printed publications, our office ad-

ministrator now posts every week a printed copy

of our updated monthly newsletter in the Hellenic

Center. We hope that this will be very helpful. In

St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church April 2015

10

case you experience any issues, please let our

Communications Chair and church office know.

Finally, listed below are two more reminders regard-

ing our new services:

The live streaming of our services at St. Nicholas

has been set up and can be seen on our website

directly at

www.stnicholaswilmington.org/LiveStreaming.ht

ml . In case you would like to view our services on

your mobile devices (smartphones, tablets, iPads

etc.), there is an app available that is more suitable

for this purpose. For information on how to set

your device up with this app, you can contact Ale-

xandros Theodoropoulos at communica-

[email protected] .

Our special hearing aid system that we recently

acquired is available to assist our older especially

parishioners with hearing issues to better listen

and follow our services. The system has, at this

point, four receivers available that are simple in

their use, feature volume controls and are carried

by each parishioner individually. Please see one of

the Pangari (candle stand) attendants on duty in

the Narthex area, in case you feel you would like

to try one of the receivers.

In case you have any suggestions or feedback that

could help us in our continuous effort communications

publications/media please contact our church office at

(910) 392-4444 or [email protected]

or our Communications Chair, at communica-

ΖΩΗ ΣΕ ΜΑΣ - Zoh-EE Seh Mas - Life to all of us ...

On March 15 we held a 1-year memorial for Chris

Varellan, brother of Anne Bakalis Pinkston and Theo

(Uncle) of Debra Bakalis Rallis. May his memory be

eternal!

On March 15 we held a 40-day memorial for Kon-

standinos “Gus” Tsingelis and Athanasios Papoulias.

May their memories be eternal!

With the Saints, give rest to the souls of Your servants, where there is no pain, sorrow, or suffering, but life

eternal.
