Dear Friends,
Good Friday
Last year I had the great joy of celebrating Easter in Burham and Would-
ham for the first time.
But I remember being really surprised at how few people were in church
on Good Friday.
When I worked in a parish in the Notting Hill area of London we had
almost as many people coming to church on Good Friday as we did at
Christmas and Easter. And that was for a three hour service! Almost
everyone, men and women and children were dressed in black from head
to toe, in the way people used to dress for funerals, as indeed some still do.
I think it was because many of the people there had experienced suffering
of various kinds. And on Good Friday they came to hear the Gospel
reading about Jesus being crucified. They were able to empathise with
Jesus sharing our suffering. They were able to be thankful that God
brought something good out of such evil. And they were able to express
their feelings and emotions in the music.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad that lots of people come to church on Easter
Day and that there is an atmosphere of festival and celebration. In fact as
Christians we have 50 days from Easter Day until Whitsunday or
Pentecost which is a party season, in contrast to the forty days of Lent
which went before.
But for me I can enjoy the Easter celebration more fully when I have also
walked with Christ in the Way of the Cross on Good Friday. That helps
me to appreciate how much there is to celebrate. The complete love and
commitment of God for us and for our world.
Locally we have two opportunities to do this. On Good Friday morning
there is Messy Church at the Church in Burham (moving just for this day
from our usual meeting place in the Community Centre to be with our
sisters and brothers in the Methodist Church). On Good Friday afternoon
there is a service in Wouldham church with some of our well-loved Good
Friday hymns. It won’t last for three hours, just an hour. And there is no
dress code!
I hope that this year we will walk with Christ through the time of his
Passion to prepare for the great Easter celebration of new life.
In peace, Mike

WOULDHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWS5
Recreation Ground – The Parish Council has been made aware that
there is a problem with dog poo on the recreation again. The Council
would respectfully ask all dog owners to clean up after their pet. If you do
witness anyone not clearing up after their dog, then please report the
incident to the Dog Warden at TMBC on 01732 844522. Please help to
keep Wouldham village clean.
Defibrillator Update – By the time you read this, the defibrillator should
be in its new cabinet to the right hand side of the village shop through the
gate. This now allows 24 hour access to this equipment. On behalf of
residents, the Parish Council would like to thank D.S.T.L near Sevenoaks
for donating the defibrillator to the village, Alan Boakes for his kind
donation for the cabinet in memory of his wife Hazel and to Jay Patel
from Wouldham Village Stores for allowing the defibrillator cabinet to be
installed on his premises. If anyone is interested in learning how to use
the defibrillator, please contact the Clerk so we can get an idea on
numbers for a training session.
Part Night Street lighting – KCC have done a full assessment of the
ocal area and potential impacts of the part night street lighting. They are
looking for people with their local knowledge in the area to identify any
streets where it is felt a vulnerable group or community may be adversely
impacted by the changes. Please see www.kent.gov.uk/streelights for
further details or contact the Parish Council who can pass on specific
information with the column number or location to KCC. As usual, if you
see any streetlight problems that need reporting, please contact the Clerk
with location details, nearest property name/number and, if possible, the
number on the column.
Residents’ Questions on Village Concerns – A very positive meeting
was chaired by Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council leader Nicolas
Heslop on 28/2/14, along with the Borough Councillors, Parish Council
and village representatives who were addressing your concerns with
Peters Village amongst other issues. A question collating exercise has
also been carried out by a local resident. The Parish Council has been
working along with your Borough Councillors to find out the answers to
your questions from TMBC, KCC and Trenport. The minutes from the
TMBC meeting and your questions and answers are both now available
on the Parish Council website or hard copies can be requested from the
Clerk.

Continued.....Proposed Allotment Development – Following on from
the consultation in Wouldham by Tracey Crouch MP and Borough
Councillors, Roger Dalton and Dave Davis, the results showed that out of
270 votes, 90% of residents opposed moving the allotments and the
building of additional homes on the allotment site. The Parish Council
took on board residents’ views on this and at its meeting held on 11/3/14,
it unanimously voted to discontinue with the proposed allotment
development.
New Village Hall – Residents have expressed to the Parish Council that
they are interested in assisting with looking into funding for a new village
hall. The Village Hall Committee will therefore be looking to set up a
sub-committee to specifically look into this. Any residents interested in
being part of this sub-committee should contact the Parish Clerk in the
first instance for further details.
If anyone does have any further questions or concerns, you can email,
write or telephone the Clerk or you are welcome to attend our next Parish
Council meeting on Tuesday 1st April in Wouldham Village Hall, starting
at 7.30pm.

Wouldham All Saints Church of England Primary School
This term we have all been very busy learning about recycling and castles
for our themes. The infants have visited Rochester, Bodiam and Dover
Castles and had great fun pretending to be knights and princesses, we even
had a stray cat that needed scaring from the castle!
The juniors have been learning about recycling, and looking at facilities
locally and also about why it is important to protect our world and the
wildlife that lives here. Year 6 class have been to Tesco and seen first -
hand how the store deals with waste and it is linked to their project of
‘Farm to Fork’.
This term has been World Book Day and World Maths Day with lots of
exciting activities in school and also lots of visits to Strood library to meet
children’s authors. From these days has come lots of expressive writing
and a boost to maths with each class working hard to be the winner of the
maths challenge.
The children have also been enjoying Forest School at Shorne Wood and
there have been lots of sporting competitions and clubs for all age groups.
We have football, netball, gymnastics, judo, cross country as well as
swimming and sports mornings at North West Kent College. The children
are always active and we try and provide as many activities as we can, with
sewing, puppet, nature, chess and King Squad clubs happening at lunch-
times.
As we are all preparing for Easter with activities planned with All Saints
Church, there have been lots of events in school linked to Shrove Tuesday
and Ash Wednesday, with children racing with pancakes, and also children
being ‘ashed’ in worship. We have a weekly child led worship from our
Wouldham Worship Warriors, and they are growing in confidence and are
happy to plan and lead the worship each week.
The children are happy and contented at Wouldham and are given lots of
support and encouragement to achieve their potential. The school motto of
‘Fly HIGH’, and ‘make your best your standard’ really is helping everyone
to grow into independent and confident children who are happy to learn
and stick at work - even when it is difficult!
We at Wouldham All Saints School wish all the villagers of Burham and
Wouldham a very happy Easter.
