Revision of the Maximum Period of Employment (POE)

for Basic Skilled PRC or NTS WPHs

Categories of Workers Maximum Period of Employment

(a) “Higher Skilled” WPHs 18 years

(b) “Basic Skilled” WPHs Except for the following:-

10 years

(i) Existing “Basic Skilled” WPHs who have worked for more than 8 years in Singapore as of 1 Jan 2012

To be granted either: • One-time work permit renewal of 2 years; or • Two-time work permit renewals of 1 year each. from the date of expiry of their existing Work Permit on/after 1 Jan 2012 The total POE of the “Basic Skilled” WPH with the concessionary renewals should not exceed 18 years.

(ii) Returning “Basic Skilled” WPHs who have worked for more than 8 years in Singapore and return between 1 Jan 2012 and 31 Dec 2013

To be granted either: • One-time work permit application of 2 years; or • Two-time work permit applications of 1 year

each. The total POE of the “Basic Skilled” WPH with the concessionary renewals should not exceed 18 years.

Important Note: From 1 Jan 2014 onwards, returning “Basic Skilled” workers who have already accumulated a POE of 10 years or more, will only be allowed to return if they upgrade themselves to be “Higher Skilled” workers.

Example 1:

A "Basic Skilled" WPH who has worked for 12 years and whose WP expires

on 1 June 2012 will be able to stay for 2 more years until 31 May 2014.

Example 2:

A "Basic Skilled" WPH who has worked for 12 years, left Singapore and return on

1 June 2013, will be able to stay for 2 more years until 31 May 2015.
