Ann McGilvrey Award It is time to propose candidates for the prestigious McGilvrey Award for sportsmanship and ethics. This award honors a District 5 player, or in some cases a pair, who epitomize(s) ethical behavior and good sportsmanship at the bridge table. On June 8, 1973 the District V bridge community suffered the loss of Ann Lytle McGilvrey, Ralph Vichill and Lee Coito in a tragic boating accident. In honor of Ann's memory, and her reputation as one who exemplified the highest standards of sportsmanship and ethical behavior at the bridge table, the Board of Directors of District V instituted the Ann McGilvrey Award. It is presented at the May regional each year to a player or partnership who reflects those same positive qualities. These recipients are not chosen on the basis of service or bridge ability. Only past winners are invited to participate in the selection process. Typically the selection committee will look for someone who has established a district-wide reputation for active ethics and good manners. Here is a list of previous winners, with the year if known: William Babb Kay & Richard Barbaris Gail Carns Irene & Jeff Darrow Robert Freedman & James Mathis Harry Ganelin Julia Halloran Keyla Lawton Grace Moore Woody Van Court Joyce Wade Yik Young 1986 Elmer Schwartz 1988 Richard Fleischman 1990 John Toy 1991 Arthur Goldsmith 1992 Judi Sonon 1993 Marvin Melamed 1994 Joe Dragoun 1995 Richard Early

1996 Sharon Fairchild 1997 Jan Assini & Nomi Connell 1998 Alice Lind 1999 Roni Gitchel and Tom Wolstoncroft 2000 Howard Lebow and Mary Paulone Carns 2001 Jim Zimmerman 2002 Alice Williams 2003 Sandra Fleischman 2004 Pat Rasmus 2005 Jim Reeve 2006 Ernie Retetagos 2007 Peter Grover 2008 Bernie Fudor 2009 Susan Stark 2010 Charles (Pat) Smith 2011 Lynn Raferty

Nominations must be received no later than Wednesday, May 16, 2012. Any nominations received after the deadline will be placed in contention for the following year and not be eligible for this year's award.

The 2012 winner will be announced at the All-American Regional in May.

We will start with some club news:

In January BC Meridian held several events with pre-dealt boards, where the same hands were played at multiple clubs. The first one played on January 2 was the ACBL Inter-Club Championship Game - ACBL-wide event wherein ACBL manages the results and across-the-field scoring through the Internet to determine overall rankings at all clubs that participate. The game file is e-mailed to ACBL to be included in the overall scoring. Players earned black regular club masterpoints at the club in addition to club championship masterpoints when they placed in the overalls (players get better amount). Each club represents a separate section and the face-to-face play is complimented with across-the-field scoring through the Internet. This 141 table event was won nationwide by players from our Unit – Jay Costello and Donna Steffan scored 68.71% and earned 10.06 black points. Bob Padgug and Gene Finton finished 5th with 65.59% earning 5.45 masterpoints. The nice bonus from this game is that ACBL provides frequencies from all played hands – the most popular contracts from each board and how many times it was played and with what result. The data is a real representation of what the most “on par” result is and the players can fairly analyze their performance. The web links for the game results are: http://www.acbl.org/play/iccGames/1201104.HTM

and for frequencies: http://www.acbl.org/play/iccGames/ICC0102F.HTM

On January 23 and 24 Meridian participated at the charitable events organized by the World Bridge Federation. The club donated a dollar per player to UNICEF. At those fun charity events same hands were played at multiple clubs around the world and participants checked and followed their scores against fellow bridge players from around the globe in countries like England, Peru, Jordan, Japan, Germany and others. Those were an enjoyable couple of days while raising money for charity. Monday’s event was played in 20 clubs by 412 pairs and Tuesday’s in 21 clubs by 377 pairs. Meridian contributed with 16 and 10 tables respectively. Again participants can download club frequencies and overall frequencies, which provide really interesting material for those interested in analyses. The organization handling and processing the results is the same that process the results in the ACBL World Pairs Games at the beginning of June each year. Their website is www.ecatsbridge.com .The top pairs from our unit on Monday were Vince Pesce and Jerry Geiger, 60.75% (24th worldwide); Bev Cohen and Judith Padgug, 60.21% (29th); Dorothy and Ed Rupp, 57.12% (67th). And on Tuesday - Dale Anderson and Bob Padgug, 63.64% (13th worldwide); Dan Gerstman and Christine Urbanek, 63.22% (16th); Jim Gullo and Judith Padgug, 60.19% (26th). All players received a souvenir brochure with analyses for each hand.

Whistfully Yours by Bev Carter Seems like our Unit is living under a black cloud these days. Reminiscent of the Lil Abner comic strip where the little bent over guy whose name I can’t recall was always seen with one over his head. A while back we were booted out of our playing site just prior to a Sectional that was scheduled there. A new site was located which was working out quite well and a Sectional was scheduled there for April 13th through 15th. Guess what………………..this site was turned over to another group even though we had a contract with them. Luckily, one of the owners took pity on us and convinced the city of Garfield Heights to allow us to use their Civic Center for the April event, and hopefully those scheduled for August and November as well which would give us time to locate another facility for future tournaments. We have checked out the facility and it is very nice and well suited for our means. Hopefully this article will reach you prior to the event and you will find your way to it. Location is 5407 Turney Road, Garfield Heights. It is just around the corner from the old site so you will find it easy to get to. Hopefully we will see you all there. Members of Unit 125 will be electing 5 new board members at this sectional and we will be saying goodbye to 5 present members whose term is ending. Those going off the board are: Harriet Kitay, Ellen Miles, Roz Sukenik, Frank Scali and Mary Lou Vermerris. We thank them for their dedication and hard work in making our Unit the best ever. We also want to thank those who are working so hard teaching the 6th and 7th graders in the Cleveland School system the game of bridge. The program is headed by Doug Henderson aided by Kathy Kovacs, Dave Norris, Elaine Zich, Mary Jane Mucalo, Donna Largent, Pat Koberg and Steve Vrooman. They do an outstanding job and hopefully these young people will find that bridge is a game well worth participating in. The bridge world needs young players to keep the game alive and thriving. If you would like to volunteer, contact Doug at 440-356-2825. He will be happy to hear from you.

Last but far from least, is the upcoming May Regional at the Holiday Inn, Rockside starting Wednesday, May 23rd (which by the way, is World Turtle Day), ending on May 28th, Memorial Day. This year for the first time, there are two “gold rush” events for players with zero to 750 points. There will also be additional lectures by area bridge instructors and experts as well as the future life master reception between sessions on Friday evening. So be sure to mark your calendars to be there.

Can’t end without a little humor:

Did you know:

• Most free bridge lessons are highly overpriced!!! • Believe it or not, your partner is trying to play on your side • Most old bridge players never die…..they just pass away • Overheard: Partner, every day you play worse and worse, but today you

are playing like the day after tomorrow • At bridge, friendliness is the best policy. Don’t let the premiums lapse
