From the Vicarage... . .What a joyous month Apri l is. Signs ofnew life al l around point us towards thenew life of the resurrection which l ies atthe heart of the Easter story. But beforewe get to Easter we have another specialday in Apri l , Mothering Sunday orMothers Day as many know it. During thesixteenth century, people returned totheir mother church for a service to beheld on the fourth Sunday in Lenthonouring Mary, the mother of Jesus. Inlater times, Mothering Sunday became aday when domestic servants were givena day off to visit their mothers and otherfamily members. I t was often the onlytime that whole famil ies could gathertogether. Sometimes, a maid would bringa Simnel cake home to share with thefamily and the Lenten fast wastemporari ly broken as famil ies celebratedbeing together.

Today, Mothering Sunday has arguablysuccumbed to the same forces ofcommercial ism which have assaultedother holidays and festivals but perhaps, more than ever, the traditions whichundergird Mothering Sunday, speak to ustoday. Tim Ross writing in The Telegraphon March 5 quotes a poll of 3,000‘babyboomers’ which highl ights theconcern that the generations may belosing touch with one another. One in 1 0of those questioned had not seen theirparents for at least a year with almosthalf explaining that they were ‘too busy’.Unsurprisingly, perhaps, many were leftwith a sense of guilt while many olderpeople were left feel ing very isolated.Perhaps therefore, Mothering Sundayacts as a valuable prompt and reminderthat in our busy lives the need to connectwith family members remains asimportant as ever.

The month culminates in the celebrationof the central event in the Church

calendar. Having contemplated thecrucifixion and death of Jesus duringHoly week, we celebrate his rising to l ifeon Easter day. For Christians, theresurrection of Jesus changeseverything and is the hope at the veryheart and core of the Christian gospel. So, we would love to welcome you to StSwithun's during Apri l , either to theMothering Day Family service or to anyof the services throughout Holy Weekincluding of course, Easter Day itself.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . .and final ly, we are organisingjointly with the Community Shop, aconcert performed by the IpswichMassachusetts, Music Ensemble. Theywere hugely popular when they lastperformed here and so we are lookingforward to another great evening. Docome along, because as well as anenjoyable event you wil l be supportingthe vil lage shop and church.

With warmest greetings

Jane

So what is Europe Day?For the past two months you have beenhearing about the chance the Bathfordand Kingsdown Twinning Associationhas of participating in Artannes’celebrations of Europe Day. But wehave failed to tel l you what Europe Dayis, so here is a brief explanation and ahint of a history lesson.

In Artannes they combine Europeancelebrations with their remembrance ofVE Day which is commemorated on 8May. Europe Day is, in fact, two dayswhich fal l on dates - 5 and 9 May – closeto each other. 5 May celebrates theestablishment of a Council for Europe in1 949 is remembered while the 9 Maycommemorates the proposal of theEuropean ideal in 1 950 by the thenFrench Foreign Minister, RobertSchumann.

Schumann proposed the pooling of theFrench and West German steel and coalindustries and this led to the creation ofthe first European Community activity -the Coal and Steel Community. Fromthis idea the whole package developed. And in 1 985 it was decided that this dateshould be honoured as the foundingmoment of the EU.

I t is a day when the member states havethe opportunity to celebrate being part ofthe European family. I t is not somethingin which we in the UK have decided totake part. Artannes usually joins up witha number of other towns in the regionwho have their "twins" too - I tal ians,Germans, Belgians are just some of thenations represented.

And even now, when there is talk ofchanging the Bank Holidays, no onementions it. But we are lucky here inBathford and Kingsdown as we do havethe opportunity to participate in it. How?Just ring Peter Rideal straight away anddiscover how you and your family could

enjoy a really European celebrationamong European friends (Closing date 8Apri l).

Call Peter on 01 225 858322 to find outmore.
