Crestwood Senior Cody Ryba Wins Gold At State Wrestling Tournament

It’s the thing that every high school athlete dreams of, to win the state championship in their respective sport. But for Crestwood senior Cody Ryba, being the best wrestler in the state of Ohio was more than just a dream. State Budget Impacts Crestwood

As we work through the new information being provided to us by the state, there are still looming questions about funding in specific areas, however, on the surface, it appears that the reductions in funding may not be as dramatic as feared. Unfortunately, the loss of the Federal Stimulus money previously given to districts over the past couple of years creates a financial void which is significant and for many of us even painful. Due to the reduced overall revenue, I have notified the Crestwood Education Association that there may be a RIF (Reduction in Force) of eight teachers throughout the four buildings. Any official Board action related to these eight teachers would occur later in April. We anticipate reductions to administration and classified staff as well. We look at this as a significant loss to our district, and it is our sincerest hope that we can reduce the layoffs or initiate some recalls once we get further clarifications on state funding and a better picture of our staffing needs. As in any district there is an ebb and flow of staff at the end of the year with people making decisions to retire, move out of state and even on to other districts. This natural movement may allow for us to lose fewer staff members due to RIFs. This is never an easy time for anyone, and even with prudent spending and planning for reductions, significant cuts in funding make these actions inevitable. In order to minimize our staffing reductions, a group of staff members formed to create a “cost-reduction” committee. The committee identified potential reductions ranging from a minimum of $200,000 per year to a high of nearly $400,000 per year. I want to thank the committee members for their assistance and we will begin implementing some of the reductions as soon as possible so as to begin realizing their benefits sooner. I also would like to extend a sincere thank you to our staff, board and community for your patience as we navigate the many changes taking place in education and public service across the state. We will continue to publish updates in Comments as we realize further impacts.

the third-ranked kid in the quarterfinals and defeated a nationally-ranked wrestler from St. Paris Graham in the state semi-finals. Not only that, but his opponent was a two time-state finalist and a former state champion. For the title match, Cody defeated Oak Harbor’s Jake Cramer by a score of 5-4.” The title match was a nail-biter in its own right. Cramer had come to the tournament as the projected state champion. After a scoreless first period, Ryba chose down and reversed his opponent to earn two points. He held Cramer off to keep his lead through the end of the second period. Cramer chose down to start the third period and reversed Ryba, tying the match at 2-2. Cody escaped to take the lead and took his opponent down to make the score 5-2. With victory in hand, Ryba gave up a precautionary reversal in the final eight seconds to close his lead at 5-4 and seal the championship. As the Crestwood crowd erupted in cheers, Cody was only looking for one person, his dad. Overall, the Crestwood team finished in sixth place with 50.5 total team points and only five points out of fourth place. The team had seven total state qualifiers this year—a school record. Placing for the Red Devils in seventh place were Adam Horovitz (145lbs.) and Cheney Mattarese (160lbs). Joe Monroe (189lbs) finished in sixth place in his bracket. Cody Ryba is the first state champion for Crestwood High School in 17 years. But in the Ryba household, the tradition lives on, but now they have three state championships.

Eat Foods with Color in April

Our school is excited to be participating in a national healthy eating initiative called P.A.C.K. Week- Pack/Purchase Assorted Colors for Kids Week. This is a fun and educational program that is aimed at encouraging kids to eat more colorful fruits and vegetables. The focus of P.A.C.K. Week is on eating a wide variety of colorful fruits and vegetables as each has its own nutritional benefits. To get the broadest range of nutrients, all colors are important- purple, white, red, yellow, orange and green. And kids love eating the rainbow. Each day of P.A.C.K. Week has been assigned a different color and we’re asking you to pack a fruit or vegetable of that color in your child’s lunch or purchase the school lunch which will offer a variety of choices of fruits and vegetables in that color. All forms of fruits and vegetables count so consider 100% juice, dried fruit or canned fruit or vegetable forms. Here are the days of P.A.C.K. Week with some packing tips to make it easy:

Monday, April 11 – Purple: Grapes, raisins, blueberries or 100% grape juice

Tuesday, April 12 – White: Cauliflower, bananas, white peaches or pears

Wednesday, April 13 – Green: Green apple slices, kiwi or celery sticks

Thursday, April 14 – Red: Tomatoes, red pepper slices, strawberries, red apple slices or dried cherries

Friday, April 15 – Yellow/Orange: Carrots, apricots, orange slices or pineapple chunks

There are lots of ways to be creative and get more healthy fruits and vegetables into your child’s day. For more tips visit www.fruitsandveggiesmorematters.org

Please join us as we celebrate P.A.C.K. Week and fruits and veggies!!

Measuring Body Mass to Help Prevent Disease

Ohio Senate Bill 210, known as the Healthy Choices for Children Act is aimed at reducing childhood obesity by ensuring that students have access to healthy meals and beverages at school and by providing students and parents with information about student health. A requirement of this bill is the annual screening of Body Mass Index (BMI) for all students in kindergarten, third, fifth and ninth grade. We have completed the measurements and the results from our screenings will be sent home before the end of the school year.

Dedicate a New Tree at the Crestwood Elementary Buildings

What a great way to honor a family members’ life, an inspirational teacher, a major milestone, or the life of a special someone…..plant a tree that will continue to grow and flourish and represent all of these. The Outdoor Education Committee established the Memorial Tree Garden at the Primary and Intermediate Schools in 2005 and is contining this great tradition. Garden Girls, Inc., a local landscape company, has made available a selection of native trees for the area. These trees will be planted on the Elementary Schools Campus. The cost of each tree is $250. The price includes the planting of the tree, care and a plaque. The permanent plaque will state the species of the tree, the date, and the name of the person, family, group or event that is being honored. If you are interested in placing an order for such a wonderful gift, please fill out the bottom portion of this form and return to the Primary Building in care of Lee Dean by Friday, April 22, 2011. Please make checks payable to Crestwood Primary PTO (Outdoor Education Committee in memo line). Thank you for being part of such an extraordinary way of honoring that special person or event in your life and for becoming part of the Crestwood Elementary Tree Garden. For additional information, please contact either Lee Dean at 330-422-3100 or [email protected] or Jo Walsh-Cobb at CIS.

A BMI below the 5th percentile may mean that the child is not growing well. Children with a BMI over the 85th percentile are considered overweight and those above the 95th percentile are considered obese. These youngsters are at risk for type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Overweight can cause wear and tear on the joints resulting in pain or arthritis; sleep apnea, when a person temporarily stops breathing during sleep) which not only interrupts sleep but leaves them tired and can affect their ability to concentrate. Since BMI is a tool to see how a child is growing, it is important to follow up with a complete evaluation with a physician if your child’s weight is not in the healthy range. BMI is only one screening and it cannot tell the difference between muscle and fat. An athletic child with a lot of muscle may have a high BMI but not be overweight. You can talk with the doctor about growth, nutrition, activity level, sleep and fluid intake- the things that most affect your child’s health. Portage County Health Department partners with countywide services and programs to promote healthy lifestyles that include good nutrition and physical activity. One of these is the FLIGHT Program which is a family centered program offered by PCHD and Kent State University Nutrition Outreach Program to children and their families living in Portage County. It is a free program held at the PCHD and available to children ages 3-18 years old. Call the PCHD- 330-298-4490 or KSU 330-672-2063 to schedule an appointment. The Portage Park District also has many free opportunities for physical activity in its 10 parks and trails. Check out their website.

Middle School Students Mimic French Artists

Crestwood Middle School French students held an art exhibit of their own works, inspired by Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin. They drew from life, like Van Gogh, and also from imagination, like Gauguin. At the exhibit, French students left comments for each other in French, while teachers and staff also wrote feedback for participants.

Three Middle School Students Qualify for State Power of the Pen Contest

Results for the state qualifiers of the Power of the Pen have gone public. Congratulations to Hannah Hilty, Sam Oliphant and Cate McSwain who will represent CMS in May at Wooster College. Additional praise goes to Hannah Hilty for yet another award, the Director’s Choice Award for a story she wrote at the Kent State University competition in February titled, “Off to War We Go.”

8th Graders Visit Washington DC A group of approximately 100 students visited Washington, D.C. last March. Students enjoyed the American History and Air & Space Museum, the Washington Monument, the Capital Building and White House; Arlington Cemetery; Lincoln, Jefferson and Roosevelt Memorials; WWII, Vietnam and Korean War Memorials; and the Peterson House. Students were moved by finding family members listed on the war memorials, and were able to make connections to history learned with sights visited. To view more photos, visit the website.

While learning about the ancient Roman Empire, Ms. Reed’s 7th grade Social Studies classes replicated some Roman ideas and accomplishments. Included were architectural and technological advances, battle strategies and weaponry, daily life including food eaten, and of course, gladiators and the Colosseum.

Intermediate School . . . GeoBoards Make Geometry Real

The fourth graders are currently working on a Geometry unit. Recently, the students in Mrs. Franks’ math classes worked with GeoBoards to create polygons. Pictured are students from Mrs. Cobb’s homeroom working with the GeoBoards.

Third Graders Learn Musical “Families”

The third grade classes are finishing their unit on musical instruments. Students now can divide the instruments into family groups based on characteristics. They have learned how each family produces a sound and have experimented with how size and length effect pitch. Brennan Vaughn, Nolan Teece and Leah O’Laughlin demonstrate how to ‘buzz’ their lips through a mouthpiece to produce a sound on our “brass” instruments.

Speech Therapy Includes Social Skill Groups

Speech therapy is not just “speech” anymore. Speech Services are now focused on “total communication.” Beyond just “speaking correctly,” therapy includes listening skills, writing skills, social skills, reading skills, and at the Intermediate School, the “Lunch Bunch.” Therapy that focuses on communication that addresses all these areas is essential for students to succeed in the classroom and in society. Collaboration with general education standards is also extremely important to support speech students in their classroom settings. This means using grade-level vocabulary words and practicing the sequences that they need in math, writing, and reading. Therapy has moved from small group sessions in the speech room to the classroom, cafeteria, and at recess to carryover skills acquired in those sessions. Memory and processing skills are coordinated between the Speech/Language therapist, Mrs. Braden and the Music teacher, Mrs. Jarvi. The “Lunch Bunch” and Social Skills groups are fun approaches to get to know students better, work on manners, and talk about school issues. These groups are organized and implemented by the Speech/Language therapist, Mrs. Braden; Guidance Counselor, Mr. Traveny; and School Psychologist, Dr.

Kraynak. The newest approach for “Social Skills” consists of groups at all three grade levels with 10-15 students per group. There have been three sessions, so far, focusing on listening skills, making friends, and comparing personalities and interests. Students have enthusiastically participated in the planned activities. It is exciting to try new approaches in therapy to help students become good citizens and responsible community members. Different types of therapy styles are essential in order to address the many challenges that our students are facing today.

Although many wealthy entrepreneurs create a name for themselves through their generous philanthropy, our young entrepreneurs are creating a business solely to raise money for a cause. The young entrepreneurs in Ms. Boyle’s and Mrs. Grebb’s second grade classes have been busily crocheting to meet the demand of their new business, Friendship Bracelets. The business began after the students expressed an interest in helping one of their friends, Emily Ziska, who until recently had been a student in Mrs. Grebb’s class. Emily’s baby sister, Isabella, was born with a rare autoimmune disease. Isabella is currently being treated in Cincinnati and Emily’s family has relocated to be near her. The students wanted to do something to help Emily and the idea of using their new found crocheting skills to make friendship bracelets to

sell was born. Many different skills go into making a bracelet. The children had to measure the length of yarn to be used. They had to advertise their business by making posters and doing announcements over the loud speaker. They had to count money and make change during the sale. Many economic terms were also reinforced with this project. For example, the classes experienced a scarcity of bracelets when they sold out on their first

The first grade students in Mrs. Picone’s and Miss Benton’s classes celebrated the books of Dr. Seuss during the week of his birthday, March 2. Some stories read were: Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Hat, If I Ran the Zoo and There’s a Wocket in My Pocket. Both classes integrated that week’s lessons and skills into learning about the books of Dr. Seuss. We had a great time learning rhyming skills, long vowels, painting animals that we would put in the zoo and eating green eggs and ham too. Mrs. Trivelli came in and read a Dr. Seuss book to our class, titled I Can Read With My Eyes Shut.
