Our children’s programs have taken off, and our calendar is filled up each month with preschool programs: Wee Play, KinderDance, Little Hands Music; and “big kids” classes: Creative Dance Center’s Hip Hop classes, Silver Knights Chess Club, and Abrakadoodle art classes. Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve spoken with several residents about ideas for adult programming, and I am working on developing those ideas, but while I’m at it, I’d love some more input. What do you, as a Brambleton resident, want to do? Some of you might say, “I don’t have time to devote to my interests”. As a full-time working, mother of two, and wife to an active duty Naval Officer, who works long hours, I understand. However, I also know the benefits of taking some time for yourself to develop your own interests and talents. It’s also a great way to relieve the stresses of everyday life. I urge you to think about ways that you can expand your interests, without having to drive the distance. Please take a few minutes to complete our programming survey by April 5th, and you'll be entered into a drawing to win one Great Kids Summer Camp week! During yard wasteseason, ALL HOMES will have a weeklyscheduled pick up day of the yard waste. Recycling of yard debris is mandatory from March1 through December 24. Composting, chipping, and mulching are great ways to recycle your yardwaste.

On the eve of its one-yearanniversary, Brambleton’sBloo Dental continues toreceive recognition for itsinnovative practice.

Interior Design magazinefeatured Bloo Dental in itsFebruary 2011 issue. The

magazine devoted three pages of photos andeditorial, highlighting the practice’s forward-thinking design and attention to detail.

Writer Laura Fisher Kaiser desribes Bloo Dental’s2,500-square-foot space, “When you walk in thedoor, you feel like you’ve been transported intoan octopus’s garden, or the tube of a surfer’sdream wave. Curved wall segments frame thewaiting area’s long sidewall, with dark bluebanquettes tucked inside. A watery projectionshimmers on the canopy arching over thereception desk, while a giant abstract water

graphic, impossibly azure, appears on the desk’sfront panel and wraps the exterior of theadjacent lab.”

Dr. Haress Rahim, Bloo Dental’s director and aBrambleton resident, believes that theappearance of any medical office is a strongreflection of the care patients can expect toreceive.

“My patients deserve to receive their dental carein a practice that is comfortable and pleasing,”said Dr. Rahim, who was ranked, for the thirdstraight year, as one of the top dentists in theUnited States by Consumers’ Research Councilof America for 2011.

Bloo Dental, which provides dental care foradults and children, is accepting new patients.More information about Bloo Dental is availableonline at www.bloo-dental.com or by calling 703-327-5533.

April Tips for the Garden

The best time to plant shrubs and trees is on awindless, cloudy day.

Once new growth begins on trees and shrubs, cut back to green wood any twigs affected bywinter kill.

Don’t coat pruning cuts with tree paint or wounddressing. These materials won’t prevent decay orpromote wound closure.

Prune roses to buds that point outward toencourage good air and sunlight penetration.Dark-colored canes indicate dead wood. Cutback an inch below these darkened areas. If nolive buds are left, remove the entire cane orbranch.

Prune spring-blooming shrubs, such as forsythia, weigela and early spirea, after they havecompleted flowering.

Hydrangea is one gift plant that transplants wellinto the garden after its flowers fade. When theweather warms, plant in well-drained soil in fullsun to partial shade. Don’t be surprised if thenext year’s flowers are a different color than thefirst year. Blue or pink hydrangea color isdependent on the pH of the soil. Alkaline soilproduces pink flowers; acidic soil produces blueflowers. White hydrangeas are not affected bysoil pH.

If dogwood leaves have been small, sparse andpale, the trees may need fertilizer. Request a soilsample kit from your Extension office and collecta soil sample from the area beneath the treesusing instructions provided by your Extensionagent. Mail your sample, form, and payment toVirginia Tech and correct fertilizerrecommendations will be returned with the testresults.
