Were You There? Were you there when they crucified my

Lord? Were you there when they nailed Him

to the tree? Were you there when they pierced

Him in the side? Were you there when they laid

Him in the tomb?

Were you there? Seems like kind of a silly question, doesn’t it? Even our oldest members couldn’t have possibly been there on that Friday night when Jesus was crucified. It’s just not possible, right? Well, kind of…

You see, at different times of our lives, we’ve each been a part of the story. We’ve each been Judas: betraying our Lord for the love of money. We’ve each been Pilate: washing our hands of that which is wrong, trying to remain innocent, but being complicit in our inaction. We’ve each been Mary: grieving a loss so intense and so heart-rending that it might overtake us at any second. We’ve each been Peter: denying our affiliations, hiding from our faith. We’ve each been the Centurion: over-whelmed by the realization of who this man truly was.

We’ve been a part of the story, each and every one of us. My hope for this year: As we come to the end of this journey, that you will be a part of the story once again; that you will continue the journey of lent all the way to the cross, not as a character, but as you. There are plenty of opportunities to stay on the path: text devotions, daily devotional booklet, Wednesday community services, Thursday evening services, Sunday mornings, daily Holy Week services, Maundy Thursday worship, and Good Friday worship.

So, on Easter morning, when someone asks if you were there, my prayer is that you’ll be able to say, “yes”. My prayer is that each and every one of you will be able to say that you truly stood in the shadow of

the cross this year, that you looked into the eyes of your Lord and Savior, and that

the final verse of When I Survey the Wondrous Cross became the new reality for your life:

Were the whole realm of nature mine,That were a present far too small;

Love so amazing, so divine,Demands my life, my soul, my

all.

Noon Services for Holy Week…Young Voices in Lent

(April 18-21 at noon)Every year, the Presbyterian Churches

of Fayette County come together for Holy Week services. This year’s services will be held at Maxwell Street Presbyterian (180 East Maxwell Street). Come if you can (and notice who’s preaching on Wednesday and Thursday)! Then join us at Versailles Baptist for the Good Friday service (Yes, I’m preaching there too!).

“Jesus, age 33, worked his way through the clash of Holy Week, speaking with enthusiasm, acting boldly, speaking with a new authority, challenging both the power and culture of the time. We see this same kind of boldness with the young voices rising up around the world today. We need to hear those voices in our midst this season. All of our speakers and all of our singers are under the age of 33. May we hear the challenge they bring to us!” –Woody BerryWorship at Noon, Lunch in Fellowship Hall

Confirmation Class The 2011 Confirmation Class has been

hard at work for 8 weeks now, with only a couple of week left! Each Sunday, after worship, 6 youth (most Sundays!) have gathered to study topics like: Church history, PCUSA Polity, the Trinity, Communion and Baptism, and The Lord’s Prayer. The Confirmation Class will be meeting again on April 3rd and 10th, and then, if they choose to, will join the church on April 17th during worship. Please keep them in your prayers as they continue this journey toward a deeper understanding of their faith and church membership.

3Taylor PrestonI am sure that

everyone recognizes the Stewardship Committee that organizes the Stewardship activities in the fall….It has been revamped and expanded to include planning and visioning for the whole church year round. We are very excited to be planning as a part of this mission a Retreat, not just for the men or the women or the Elders but for the Officers of Pisgah. The Elders, Deacons and Trustees collectively. The Retreat is planned for May and will be held on a Friday evening and Saturday morning with the members of the Stewardship and Planning Committee doing the planning, organizing and leading of the subgroups that will be participating from all three boards. Oh, yes, and we will be feeding everyone as well. Watch for more news about this event and keep us in prayer as we look to Pisgah’s future.

M&Ms UPDATE:By the time you receive the Pisgah Post,

the M&Ms program will have completed its first week!*The Kitchen crew is almost fully staffed! Thanks to Dan McHatton, and the Tuesday Pisgah Crew-Sue Fosson, Leslie James, Ann Hayes and Sandi Bromagen along with the Community Kitchen churches on Monday, First Christian Church on Wednesday and the help of Gary Jones with God’s Pantry.*There are several adult volunteers working with the Mentors. Thanks goes out to Bobbi Sweeney, Linda Kuder, Joe Johnson and Jim Jarmin.*We have a core group of Peer Mentors who have committed to be a part of this program throughout the 8 week Pilot- they are: Anna Burks, Tanner Congleton, Ellen Cox, Sophia Guadagni, Kristen Harris, Courtland Johnson, Peyton Knox, Sean Mckee, John Mulvaney, Ben Rathbone and Mary Kate Thomerson. These kids are AWESOME!

M&Ms is a collaborative effort between Pisgah, the Woodford Ministerial Association, First Christian Church, God’s Pantry and the Middle School and High School administrators, teachers and students. Please ask folks how it is going and if you are so moved, it is never too late to volunteer for one day a week or one day a month! (Please go to the volunteer section on the church website at www.pisgahchurch.org).

Lisa Johnson 552-6873 Dan McHatton 873-5785 MENTORS & MEALSThe Meaning of Maundy Thursday

The term Maundy comes from the Latin word mandatum (from which we get our English word mandate), from a verb that means "to give," "to entrust," or "to order." The term is usually translated "commandment," from John's account of this Thursday night.  According to the Fourth Gospel, as Jesus and the Disciples were eating their final meal together before Jesus’ arrest, he washed the disciples' feet to illustrate humility and the spirit of servanthood. After they had finished the meal, as they walked into the night toward Gethsemane, Jesus taught his disciples a "new" commandment (John 13:34-35):

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; even as I have loved you, you also ought to love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.

The colors for Maundy Thursday are usually the colors of Lent, royal purple or red violet. Some traditions, however, use red for Maundy Thursday, the color of the church, in order to identify with the community of disciples that followed Jesus. Along the same line, some use this day to honor the apostles who were commissioned by Jesus to proclaim the Gospel throughout the world.

Our Maundy Thursday service will mark the conclusion of our six Special Lenten “Gatherings.” We will begin at 6:00 p.m. with a catered, home-cooked meal, following by a brief presentation and

4service in the Sanctuary. The service will center around the theme, “Recommitting to God’s Purpose: Me and My Place at the Table.” Everyone is invited. Reservations are required for the meal only, and are requested by Monday noon, April 18. Won’t you please join us for this memorable special service.

Do you know anyone in the amusement business or a party planner with connections? We are looking for an inflatable "bounce house" to rent, or preferably on loan! Please send any leads to Stewardship & Planning Committee or Bobbi Sweeney at 256-0075 or [email protected].

TO: The Pisgah PostFROM: Hank Graddy – Greetings from

Pisgah Mission and Evangelism********************************************

You are invited to join the Pisgah Relay for Life Slumber Party starting Friday night, May 20, at 7:00 p.m. at Falling Springs Park, Versailles. We will be “slumbering/not” and walking all night till 7:00 a.m. Saturday morning. WHY? Mark 16:15 “And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to all creation.”Mark 16:20 “And they went out and proclaimed the good news everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by the signs that accompanied it.”

The Mission and Evangelism Committee helps Pisgah Church members go into the community to proclaim the good news and to meet the needs of our neighbors and to help our neighbors “find” Pisgah Church. One way Pisgah Church members proclaim the good news and serve our community and help others find Pisgah Church is by participating in the Woodford County Relay for Life. The Relay for Life program supports the work of the American Cancer Society to prevent cancer, to help recovery

from cancer, to find a cure for cancer, and to remember.

This year the Mission and Evangelism Committee set an ambitious goal – getting everyone in our church involved in doing something more than coming to church on Sunday morning. The Woodford County Relay for Life is a great opportunity for everybody sitting on the Pisgah Church benches to get off the bench and walk – collectively - as part of the Pisgah Relay for Life Team.

Last year we built our team on the theme of horse racing and we had a great group of members (Pisgah Jockeys) on the Pisgah Team. We wore the “silks” that Jennifer Chandler made – with shirts, caps and whips and a dress code. We had young people and older people who helped keep Pisgah Church “walking on purpose” – and dancing, and running, and walking on their hands, and cart-wheeling - all night long.

This year we have been given the theme of “Slumber Party.” I am concerned because I have no idea what a slumber party is – or what I am supposed to do at such an event. Fortunately, Linda Scott has assured me that we will have lots to do – including hair curling and ear piercing. Linda is confident that the slumber party theme will attract our youth. My appeal is to you - the older members of Pisgah Church who actually read the Pisgah Post. PLEASE JOIN OUR TEAM. DO SO BY VISITING THE PISGAH WEB PAGE. If you cannot do that – grab me at Church.

The Woodford County Relay for Life is an evening for walking and talking and reflecting. It is an opportunity for you to talk to the person you have been sitting next to at Pisgah for the past year but never said more than “Hello” and “We sure had a lot of snow this year.” When you are walking alongside someone for an hour, you can get beyond the weather.

The Woodford County Relay for Life is also an evening for the members of Pisgah Church to let our light shine. We can let our light and our enthusiasm and our compassion and our faith radiate throughout our community. But we cannot shine as much as possible if you are not with us.

Please join the Pisgah Church 2011 Relay for Life Slumber Party by visiting

Page 6: April 2011

6our web site or by emailing me at [email protected] or calling me at 859-229-4033.

The Mission and Evangelism Committee has a number of other plans and projects – such as the M & M work for Woodford County youth and the Pisgah Victory Garden and Pisgah Academy on September 17, 2011. Please join us at our regular committee meeting after church on the first Sunday each month.

Peace to you all,Hank Graddy
