A special shout out to Jim Ryan who just went over 8 gallons and Mike Wood who is now over 6 gallons. "Way to Drain" guys.... :)~

Also, this last weekend I realized how dedi-cated our donors are. Richard Fernandez came up and told me he would not be able to donate on 4/10/10 because of a wed-ding he and Pauline will be attending that day. You see once you start to give, it is hard

Dearest Brothers and Sisters,

Here is the list of members who donated in the month of February. Please be ad-vised the list is given to me in the middle of the following month and is too late to publish in the "Freedom Flyer" even the following month. Of course we don't donate blood in order to get recognition, but a little is not bad either, especially when you show the love and compassion you have for your community. Please remember Quaid's Open House is 4/10/10 and if you are able to donate on that day, even better. The blood bank is looking for 40 pints in order to send the blood mobile out. Please make an effort to donate on that day. Come by and see your Blood Brothers and Sisters and visit with all your SBHOG friends. Thank you again for your compassion.

not to. We know it is important and even crucial to the ones who need it. We know an hour of our time can give a life time. It is an easy trade off. Think about donating.

Safety Comes First On Every Ride

Co-Rider’s Handbook by Robert Vaughan

So you’re the co-rider this trip. What could you do to make the ride more pleasurable for both you and the rider?

The Look No, The Look is not a style of clothing. It’s even easier (and cheaper) than that. The Look is looking at the right place as the bike makes a turn. Why not take advantage of the same technique a trained rider uses to keep oriented in a turn? The place to look is over the rider’s shoulder in the direction of the turn. As you look over the rider’s right shoulder in a right turn, look all the way through the turn and keep your eyes level with the horizon. This means tilting your head away from the direction of the turn. If you’re turning right, lean your body right but keep your head vertical. Using The Look keeps you leaning with the rider and keeps you oriented properly so you can enjoy the turns even more.

A Sense of Direction Wouldn’t you like your rider to pay more attention to the road and less to the map? If you think it’s hard to read a map while driving, it’s even harder to read a map while riding a motorcycle. The rider is usually glad to have someone else navigate. As a co-rider you can concentrate on the navigation, allowing the rider to concentrate on riding.

Preparation A very short checklist can make any ride a lot more pleasant. Do you have rain gear, sunscreen, a map and sunglasses? These items are often not in plain sight but will be sorely missed if they are needed and not there. Of course, there is much more that can be put on your checklist for the trip. You do have a checklist, don’t you?

Not all preparation can be done just before the trip. Was the trip planned so the rider had a chance to get adequate sleep before starting? Working all day and riding all night is probably not the best plan for rider or co-rider.

Results Investing a little time on preparation beforehand and a little effort on The Look and navigation during the ride can make it more pleasant for both the rider and the co-rider.

TREASURERS CORNER……

Well another month has gone by and April is upon us. Since I’m writing this article at the end of March and you’ll probably receive this right before our next Chapter meeting in April I’m hoping our Open House was a complete success. With that in mind hopefully our efforts paid off for all of the hard word the Chapter has put in and that we raised a sub-stantial amount of funds to fill our Treasury chest so that we can finance our Chapter through out the year. The riding season is getting better now that spring is here so let’s all have a great and safe time out there. Let’s all support the upcoming rides that your Ac-tivities Chairman has put together this year. Your Chapter Officers will be attending the Harley’s Primary Officer Training coming up in May. This year it’s being held in Reno, Nevada, and I’m personally looking forward to learning as much as I can in the financial workshops so that I can better serve the Chap-ter as your Treasurer. I’m not sure how much you realize the sacrifice that your Chapter Officers go through not only with their time and finances to serve as Officers of your Chapter. It’s not as easy as I thought and I certainly say that your past Officers, all of them deserve a great thank you for a job well done and that your 2010 Officers carry on with the same dedication. This month I’m including a bar graph showing the financial health of our Chapter for the 1st quarter of 2010. It shows the amount of income that we generated so far verses the expenses that were spent. As always, if you have any questions regarding the financial side of the Chapter, please ask me. I’m always open to help and suggestions. Thanks and have a safe ride on the open road…………………….

Here are a couple pictures of some of your Blood Brothers and Sisters riding in Death Valley at Wild Rose Canyon at 5300 ft. elevation....brrrrrr. It was cold there but warm on the desert floor.

Page 7 FREEDOM FLYER FOR APRIL 2010

As some of you may have heard, the Viet Nam Memorial Wall came in to California on Sunday the 21st of March. One of our members, Mike Wood, informed me of this great occasion. He invited me to come with him and a group of his buddy’s that were Marines from that fateful war. Sorry, it was a conflict and never classified as a war. I spent my time there taking my lumps as did everyone else. When we came back home, we were not welcomed very well either. No matter what happened, me and my friends that came back together held our heads high and never let anyone put us down for serving our country. Anyways, I called my son and told him I wanted him to go with Mike and myself on this ride. We met at 05:20 AM over at Mikes house and rode over to Beaumont and met up with the rest of the guys. This ride started as usual but before we met up with the convoy truck we lost a couple of riders with bike problems. The rest of the group pushed on and we collected at the Patton Museum on Chiriaco Peak. We stopped and waited for the official beginning at 09:00AM. When we started we had the Color Guard in front, then the Marine Tow Truck, we then had another Color Guard and then the 18 wheeler that carried the Memorial Wall. After that we had about 150 bikes with almost all Viet Nam Vets. After having the Highway Patrol blocking the freeway for us, we continued down the freeway until we got to the Spot 29 Casino. We pulled in there to reform and pick up another 150 bikes. My son and I split off from the group at this point due to having to get home but for the short time that we were with that group, I felt that we all finally got what we deserved. We were recognized for being true Americans. Speaking to Mike after the ride, they continued down the 10 freeway and on to the 605 freeway. They finally arrived at their destination at Rose Hills where the wall would be set up for a short time. Eventually the wall will be in town at the California Speedway from July the 1st to July the 5th. If you get a chance, you should try to get out there and pay you respects to that great Memorial. Remember that freedom is never free. Many soldiers have paid for this freedom with their lives. They are the true heroes of this country. God Bless our troops and our country.
