Just go to: https://www.scribd.com/# :-)

If you wish to unsubscribe, simply send an email request at [email protected]. We do hope you will continue to subscribe, but if you do not wish to receive the email, feel free to go to our Scribd page (http://www.scribd.com/wny8peace8center/), where the Weekly Updates are regularly posted and archived.

Also, don't forget to read our WNY Peace Center News/Events email blast on Wednesdays!

Any comments or suggestions to help improve our weekly newsletters, and to make them more effective as a local activist resource and community calendar are GREATLY appreciated. We are working with a text-only format, and trying to streamline and revise the conent. Thank you for supporting this newsletter! :-)

- Jeff O'Connell

SPECIAL UPDATE NOTICE: Starting on May 1, both Weekly Updates (Wednesday and Friday) will be going through another format change that will SIGNIFICANTLY shorten both email blasts. The text-only email version will be condensed (mostly titles, links, and very short texts describing events), but the PDF version (downloadable via the Peace Center's new Scribd account) will be more detailed and complete, with the graphical layout of a “genuine” newsletter, including full contact information for each organization listed.

An ongoing project to archive past and present Weekly Updates, Peace Center newsletters, and many more historical documents in this manner, to be uploaded to the Scribd account (https://www.scribd.com/wny8peace8center ) will be undertaken for 2015-2016. We hope youwill find this change to be convenient AND useful! :-) ===========================================================

GENESEE VALLEY CITIZENS FOR PEACE (GVCP)

************************************

SUNDAY, APRIL 26

“The International Peace & Planet Conference”

New York CityMore details TBA

I hope that some GVCP members and Geneseo Peace Action members will travel to NYC for the International Peace & Planet Conference. This is a conference for Nuclear-Free, Peaceful, Just, and Sustainable World. It will take place Friday, April 24 and Saturday, April 25 in New York City. The conference will be held just before the U.N. Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference (April 27 to May 22; see here for detailed info: http://www.un.org/en/conf/npt/2015/ )

On Sunday, April 26, peace activists will gather by the thousands in the streets of New York City for an international rally and march to the United Nations. Activists from around the world – with 2000 from Japan, including survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki – will make our demands for a nuclear-free world, for racial, economic, social, and environmental justice, and for an end to military crises and wars.

The Peace & Planet website is an excellent way to find out all the details of these April actions: http://www.peaceandplanet.org/mobilization/

I think that some GVCP members will want to participate in the conference and the rally and march in NYC. I assume that members of our sister group, Geneseo Peace Action, will want to participate as well. GVCP can provide funds for people who want to attend, but who can't afford the costs.

Peace,Arnie Matlin for GVCP

FRIDAY, APRIL 24 AND SATURDAY, APRIL 25

“PANYS Annual Meeting”

New York City (Location To Be Announced)

This meeting will take place right after the International Peace and Planet Conference for a Nuclear-Free, Peaceful, Just, and Sustainable World that will take place on Friday, April 24th and Saturday, April 25th in New York City.

This International Peace and Planet Conference will be held on the eve of the United N ations Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference (April 27 to May 22; see here for detailed info: http://www.un.org/en/conf/npt/2015/ ). It is being organized on the basis of five themes: Nuclear weapons abolition; Move The Money (cutting military spending to prevent wars and fund essential human needs); Climate Change and Environmental Justice; the new era of global military tensions and wars; and Racism and Militarism.

Through plenaries and workshops, the Conference Program will allow people to share information and analyses, build and further integrate our movements for the longer term, and increase our impact on the NPT Review Conference. In addition to the five themes, a youth track isbeing organized.

On Sunday, April 26th – the day before the 2015 NPT Review Conference begins – peace activists will gather by the thousands in the streets of New York City for an international rally and march to the United Nations. On the streets and in front of the U.N., activists from around the world – with 2,000 from Japan, including Hibakusha (survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki) – will make our demands for a nuclear-free world, for racial, economic, social, and environmental justice, and for an end to military crises and wars.

PRISONERS ARE PEOPLE, TOO, INC. (PRP2)

“SAFE Parole Reform Act In The Spotlight”by Karima Amin

For several years, we have stood on the side of those who advocate for the SAFE Parole Reform Act. SAFE stands for “Safe and FairEvaluations.” Several of our monthly programs have focused on sharing information about parole in New York State. Formerly incarceratedpeople have shared their stories; former parole commissioners have expressed their views; parole officers have explained their stance;

Page 19: April 20 to 23, 2015

people with incarcerated loved ones have shared their concerns; and our friends from prisoner justice organizations across the State haveencouraged us to be proactive in advocating for parole reform.

The fight for parole reform continues as New York State’s broken parole system continues to ignore the accomplishments of prisoners whohave worked very hard to prepare themselves for eventual release and return to family and community. Every parole denial adds two moreyears to a prisoner’s sentence, two more years of heartache for a family, and two more years of denying a community the benefits of acitizen’s potential. To this end, the Parole Board never gives any clear message to parole applicants about what they need to do to cause adifferent result.

Yearly, thousands of people in prison prepare to appear before Parole Boards. Most have worked diligently to prepare themselves forrelease. Sadly, release is often denied due to the “nature of the crime.” While this person’s rehabilitation may be obvious, the crime ofconviction, which may have been committed several decades ago, is the deciding factor and this person’s changed thinking and behavior areignored. If the SAFE Parole Reform Act becomes a reality, parole applicants will be given the benefit of an opportunity to show themselvesworthy of parole, families will be reunited and the Parole Board will have abided by the law.

You can get involved in this fight for justice by learning more about the campaign to reform parole and by gaining the tools that arenecessary for having a conversation with your State representatives, demanding passage of the SAFE Parole Reform Act. As an alternativeto the retribution and punishment that comes from the criminal justice system as it now functions, Prisoners Are People Too, Inc. stands as aproponent of restorative justice that serves to promote the understanding that punishment alone is not effective in changing behavior and isdisruptive to community harmony and good relationships.

Prisoners Are People Too, Inc. joins other organizations across the State, demanding passage of the SAFE Parole Reform Act. One of theseorganizations, “Milk Not Jails,” has produced a documentary, “Nature of the Crime,” which will be screened at our next monthly meetingon Monday, April 27, 2015 at 7:00-9:00pm, at the Pratt-Willert Community Center, 422 Pratt Street, in Buffalo, NY. Mr. Cale Layton, from“Milk Not Jails,” will be present to answer your questions. As members of the New York State Prisoner Justice Network, we work together“to challenge and change New York’s criminal justice system.” Join us in this effort.

“Why We Fight, Part 4: The Battle Of Britain” (1943)

From 7:00 pm, on Tuesday, April 28th, 2015, “The Battle of Britain,” part four in the Frank Capra-U. S. War Department, Why We Fight series, will be shown at El Buen Amigo, 114 Elmwood Avenue, Buffalo, New York. After the retreat of British and French forces from Dunkirk in late May--early June 1940, seeking to neutralize Britain by either forcing a peace agreement or controlling it by invasion and occupation by first defeating its air defenses, the immediate aim of the Nazi military machine was to put a halt to harassing British bombing runs on the continent, so that they could turn their full attention to the primary objective of fascism—wrecking devastation upon the workers’ state, the USSR. Bringing Britain into the Nazi camp or under its control threatened to demoralize the world before Nazi global conquest. Then U. S. Ambassador Joseph Kennedy held any effort was futile, claiming that Britain would certainly be defeated. FDR actedother advice, providing assistance to Britain to resist. Britain held out. In its last assault, the Luftwaffe was dealt a decisive defeat by British airpower. Revenge by V-2 attacks would come much later, toward the end of the war, starting in September of 1944. Walter Huston, who played the role of U. S. Ambassador to the USSR, Joseph Davies, in 'Mission to Moscow,” previously shown at El Buen Amigo, also narrates Capra’s “The Battle Of Britain.” “Fraud, Famine, and Fascism: The Ukrainian Genocide Myth from Hitler to Harvard,” (2011, [1987]), by Douglas Tottle, a Canadian trade-unionist, labor journalist, and labor historian, will be available, among other books on political subjects.

ESSAY: “FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT'S DEATH: 12 APRIL 1945”

Seventy years ago, President Roosevelt's death marked the beginning of the end of the war-time unity and trust built up between the Soviet Union, led by Joseph Stalin, and the United States, led by F.D.R. That solidarity was necessary to defeat the Nazis and Fascists in Europe and the imperialists of Japan in Asia.

To build that unity, Roosevelt had to overcome a reactionary view in this country that pre-dated the Russian Revolution of 1917. American workers, striking for an eight-hour work day and the right to form a union, were called “Reds” by the big city newspapers in the 1880s. After 1917, the anti-socialist and anti-labor propaganda just increased.

When Truman assumed the presidency in April of 1945, he brought with him his anti-communist ruling class baggage of the 1920s and 30s. After the U.S. dropped the atomic bombs on Japan in August of '45, Truman's, and others' disconnect from humanity and delusion of omnipotence grew. That disconnect and delusion were reinforced in the real-world policy sphere by the soon to be kicked out of office British imperalist Winston Churchill.

As William Shirer, author of “The Rise & Fall Of The Third Reich,” wrote in September of '46, “...Even Truman must know that the foundation for peace between the U.S. and Russia which President Roosevelt built with such care and skill had been destroyed in the last twelve months.”

What happened next? The last seventy years
