Cornerstone Bible Church ‐ Survey of Romans REVIEW

Romans Sunday SchoolINTRODUCTION

A letter to unknown people. Sometimes the greatest discoveries are made unintentionally e.g. Penicillin.

The Epistle to the Romans is Paul’s Opus Magnus, it is the Bible within the Bible.  No Book in Scripture equates in Doctrinal Content and Exposition to Romans.

Yet this is why Paul wrote this letter: he had never met most of these brethren in person.  Paul did not found this church.

II - THE LETTER Paul’s theological thinking was well developed

III THE WONDER OF ROMANS• It is just a letter.

• It was written to a church probably spread into many smaller congregations throughout the city of Rome.

• The letter was written to and for common people.

• It is not a mysterious book for theology lectures only.

• “Romans is the Old Testament re‐written.” Jared Reed

NAS Romans 1:1 Paul, a bond‐servant of Christ Jesus,called as an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God,2which He promised beforehand through His prophets inthe holy Scriptures,3concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant ofDavid according to the flesh,4who was declared the Son of God with power by theresurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit ofholiness, Jesus Christ our Lord,5through whom we have received grace and apostleship tobring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles,for His name's sake,6among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ;

Preface1Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God

The author identifies himself and his jobPretty customary of the writing of the times, since documents were longer and they didn’t have stationary.

There are three aspects highlighted in this “stationary”1 A Servant of Jesus Christ2 Called as an apostle3 For the gospel concerning Jesus

Preface1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of Goda) ServantThey were not “captured” in the days of RomeSlaves were many times educated (tutors)2/3 of the Roman Empire was made of slavesIn the west, their treatment was harsher than in the eastThey could accumulate wealth and after age 30 they could buy their freedom

Paul uses this imagery repetitively in his ministry to the gentiles of the Greco‐Roman world of his day.  A slave was a servant.  Most of the people he addressed were slaves.

Preface1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of Godaa) Servant of Christ Jesus His primary identification was not one of authorityEven when the apostolic ministry bore the highest invested authority from Christ to the church.‐ To forgive or retain sins John 20:23 comp Acts 8 & 13‐ To prescribe directives for the churches Acts 17‐ To establish the doctrinal foundation of the church

Ephesians 2:20 Paul – and for the matter none of the apostles – were power mongers.  They imitated their master Mark 10:45

Practical: beware of ministers who need to flex their arms!

b) The Gospel was not a change in course.  It was the path from the beginning ‐> Peter’s sermon Acts 2:22‐ff

admitted he was in error.

• Eternal Subordination is different, and it has been a more recent debate because of Wayne Grudem ST, and IT is used as an argument for “complementarianism”

• The text points to Jesus being declared “Son of God” by His resurrection
