A huge rock and eart h slide at JackassMountain in the Fraser Canyon broughtdown 25,000 yards of material early inMarch and blocked Highway 1 for overfou r days .

Eli Makeiv, Machine Operator 4, andRed Arnold, Road Foreman 2, both fromLytton, had close calls when the secondof two separate slides roared down.Makeiv's truck was tot ally demolished .

Report of the first slide was received byForeman Arnold from the RCMP at 9.30p.m., March 6. He was also informedthat a camper truck was on top of theslide.

He ar rived at the slide with the loaderat 10.15 p .m. Boston Bar RCMP arranged for a wrecker and the campertru ck was removed from the slide . BostonBar Foreman Vince Adamski also received a call at 10.15 p.m. reporting thehighway was closed by a rock slide. TheBoston Bar tru ck notified ForemanAd am ski the slide required a largerloader. In the meantime, Foreman Arnoldproceeded to cut one lane through theslide. When thi s was completed the ythought it necessar y to place some finematerial to level the rou gh sect ions before allowing traffic to proceed.

T he first inspection of the single lanewas carried out by F oremen Arnold andAdamski, with District Technician NickGraboski. When this was completed thesecond and final slide came down .

Foreman Arnold was still in the loaderand had to back out in a hurry andTruck-driver Makeiv was flagging on theeast end and was forced to leave hisvehicle and run.

At 1.30 a.rn.• Tu esday, District Technici an Graboski called out TommyTaverna, Road Maintenance Foreman 4,at Lytton, to check on the safe ty of EliMakeiv on the eas t side. This waschecked out by Foreman Taverna at 2.30a .m. and it was confirmed that all personnel were safe .

The slide was assessed by R. G. White,Regional Highway Engineer; D. C. MacVicar , Regional Maintenance Engineer;Roger P ratt , Regional Materials Engineer ; and Bill Helmsing , D istrict Superintendent, both from the ground and air,and by this time major equipment hadstarted to mo ve in for the clean-up.

Early in the morning of March 7, 1972 ,Foreman Adamski and Lee De smarais, ofthe Lytton crew, went to a house at thebase of the slide to again confirm that itwas not occupied.

Regional Construction Foreman FrankLofting came in from Karnloops to supervise the job, assisted by members of theFraser Canyon section supervisory staff.Scaling and clean-up work was still inprogress toward the end of March.
