The Three R’s:

Making a

Difference in

Today’s

World

Back when I was growing up, we were told that the foundation of education was the Three R’s: Reading, ‘Riting, and ‘Rithmetic (perhaps spelling should have had higher priority, as well). That’s all it will take for kids to be able to make a difference in the world. A few years later, we learned a new set of three R’s: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Again, having an impact on our world required us to attend to this new set of three R’s.

In April, as we move beyond the joy of the Resurrec-

tion and follow the mission of Christ to the ends of the

earth, let us re-learn a new set of R’s: Relieve. Reverse.

Refill. Together, these R’s will make an impact beyond

our walls and beyond our generation. Let us join the

disciples as we make a difference in our community and

around the world

“So Who Does What Again?”

As we welcome Katie Hobson onto the Spiritual For-

mation team as our intern for Youth Formation, it is

probably a helpful time to remember what our Spiritual

Formation Team looks like, clarifying roles for all of the

Team members. There are basically three parts to our

team: The Spiritual Formation Ministry, our Associate

Pastor for Spiritual Formation, and our team of In-

terns/Adjuncts. Each role is as follows:

♦ The Spiritual Formation Ministry is the lay leader-

ship portion of the team. Just like the other seven

ministries (Worship, Facilities, etc.), this ministry

meets regularly in order to do the work of their ar-

ea: oversee the budget assigned and support the

programming of Sunday school, youth and chil-

dren’s ministries, and special SF events. Brenda

Schenkel is the chair of SF this year.

♦ Our half-time (20 hours a week) Associate Pastor of

Spiritual Formation is the point person for the spe-

cialized ministries that take place. Pastor Cheryl is a

“supervisor of supervisors,” working closely to

oversee and mentor the team of interns and adjunct

who do the work of ministries in three areas.

♦ Our adjuncts/interns represent specialized minis-

tries in three different age categories: Children,

Youth, and Adults. Pastor Melissa is our Children’s

Adjunct (the title changed from intern due to her

ministry experience). Katie is our new Youth In-

tern. And the Adult Intern position is unfilled at

this time (and has been since Pastor Cheryl vacated

the role last year) but we hope to fill it in the Fall.

These specialists all work 10 hours a week, under

Pastor Cheryl’s supervision.

As you have questions or clarifications about our minis-

tries or these roles, please feel free to contact Pastor

Cheryl or Pastor Matt. And as always, please keep this

and all of our ministries in your prayers.

~Pastor Matt

Education Scholarship Available

The Stringham Scholarship Fund was established many

years ago by the family of Raber P. and Ruth B. String-

ham, long-time members of First Baptist Church, to honor

them through memorial gifts. Earnings from this endow-

ment are used solely for student scholarships.

If you will be heading to college next year or will be con-

Churches of the Northeast Area;

Listening Sessions

During the first four months of 2016 ABCCR staff

have been meeting with clergy and congregational

members in churches all across Kansas. Their goal

has been to listen to your ideas of how they can bet-

ter resource and partner with each congregation to

support healthy ministries.

The next conversation will be held at the Terra

Heights Baptist Church in Topeka on Saturday,

April 23. Please join us from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

at 232 SW Sanneman Dr. (SE of 45th St/Topeka

Blvd).

Also, mark your calendar for Sunday afternoon, Sep-

tember 11, 2016 to attend the Northeast Area Annual

Meeting. It will be held at Westside Baptist Church,

Topeka, Ks. It will be a great time of song, worship

and fellowship. Details will be available soon.

~God's Blessings, Phil Chiles,

Northeast Area Moderator

We Need You! As our

Wednesday

Night pro-

gramming

comes to an

end for the

school year,

we owe Dava

Cooper and our Wednesday night prep team a big

round of applause for all of their hard work this year!

Dava is transitioning out of Wednesday night cooking

duties (and into increased “grandma-duty”!) next fall

and we need some cooking help for our Wednesday

nights. If you are interested in serving on a cooking

team to do our Wednesday night meals, please contact

either Pastor Matt or Pastor Cheryl. If you think you

might be interested in helping, but have some ques-

tions, get in contact with them and together we will

keep up what has been a great an important part of our

weekly fellowship together!
