points out, is not about standing on one foot, quacking like a duck.

“All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. You cannot be hypnotized unless you want to be,” she stresses. “You cannot be made to do anything that is not a part of your personal value system. The only things I can suggest during hypnotherapy are the things that you truly want to do.”

She likens the feeling of being hypnotized to driving a route you’ve traveled hundreds of times. “After awhile, your subconscious takes over. You might even miss your exit on the freeway, but you know that you are driving and could stop if the car in front of you stops.”

“Sessions are conducted on an individual basis so we can personalize them to your own core issues,” Andrea says. “The privacy of personal sessions allow clients to get comfortable and get their mind in the state it needs to be in.”

“Clients learn to stop the self sabotage and internal struggle, and start making healthy food choices naturally.”

“We focus on two things,” she describes. “First we find out how to help you discover what your motivations are for eating when you aren’t hungry. Then we replace eating behavior with something that serves you better.”

The nutritional counseling buffers the hypnotherapyby helping clients learn how to shop for the right foods. Part of the Hungry Heart program also includes suggestions for exercise. Incremental change is best,” she says. “We don’t just refer everyone to a big gym. It is about having our clients come out of the program with a better quality of life, having made healthy decisions because they want to, not because they’re supposed to.” Andrea shares that with her program, 85% of clients will stop overeating in the first two to three sessions.

Most people try a diet, do well, and then gain theweight back, Andrea says. The Hungry Heart helps its clients handle their emotions without turning to food.

It’s not a diet, she notes, instead, it’s about changing one’s mindset. Hypnotherapy, behavioral counseling, and nutritional counseling work together to help you lose the weight—and keep it off .

“We do an initial one-on-one consultation with question and answers, then decide how to put a plan in place,” she says. “Everyone is different

usF virologists MaKe neW discovery

Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) infects nearly 100 percent of humans in early childhood, and the infection then lasts for the rest of a person’s life. Now, a team led by Peter Medveczky, MD, a professor in the Department of Molecular Medicine at the University of South Florida, has discovered that in some individuals, HHV-6 causes such a permanent infection by inserting or “integrating” its DNA into human chromosomes. From this harbor, the viral DNA cannot be eliminated by the immune system.

The paper describing this research was published online March 8 inProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The USF team also confirmed preliminary results by other investigators that, a long time ago, the virus inserted its DNA into the DNA of human sperm and egg cells. As a result, some people (about 1 percent of people in the U.S.) are born with the virus’s

DNA in every cell in their body. Indeed, HHV-6 is the first functional virus of any type reported to be passed through the hu-man germ line.

The team presented clear evidence that the virus can insert its DNA specifically into telomeres -- structures at the ends of each chromosome that play key roles in both aging and cancer.

Finally, the team showed that the chromo-somally integrated HHV-6 (CIHHV-6) genomes can be reactivated to an infectious form.

The findings are a surprise, since other hu-man herpesviruses cause permanent infec-tion by a different mechanism. The round up their DNA into a little circle that resides inside the nucleus of the cell: they do not insert their DNA into the chromosomes.USF Health

Great American Clean Up To Take Place In April

k eep Hillsborough Beautiful is once again promoting our annual Great Ameri-

can Cleanup. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, April 17th at locations throughout the county.

The mission of Keep Hillsborough County Beautiful is to prevent litter, promote recycling and conservation, clean up and beautify our communi-ty through action, education, aware-ness and by fostering stewardship.

KHCB achieves this mission by coordinating the Great American Cleanup, the International Coastal Cleanup, the Adopt-A-Road/Adopt-

A-Shore programs, the annual Litter Index survey and community cleanups.

More than 7,000 people in Greater Hillsborough County participated in volunteer programs sponsored by KHCB over the past year.

Volunteer groups help make KHCB a success. By working together, we build a sense of community pride, which in turn leads to cleaner and safer places to live. Studies have shown that a clean and well-main-tained neighborhood serves as a deterrent for crime. When we build a sense of community, we are build-ing a better tomorrow.

drug companies pay doctors millions each year to promote products to their peers over meals at pricey restaurants.

The drug makers have found that doctors are more likely to prescribe a new medication if they’ve heard about it from a colleague instead of a sales rep. So who are some of the doctors telling other doctors what drugs to prescribe? Patients might want to know.

Drug companies say they choose “leading clinicians” for paid speaking engagements. Among these speak-ers, according to Florida public records:

• Two Tampa surgeons involved in a botched robotic procedure that killed a Plant High School teacher.

• A St. Petersburg doctor who was put on probation by a local hospital and received a warning letter from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration after he broke several FDA rules while running a drug study.

• A surgeon in Jacksonville who mistakenly removed brain tissue during sinus surgery, leaving the patient paralyzed, blind and brain-damaged.

• Under pressure from the public, as well as government settlement agreements, last year several drug companies began publishing the names of doctors who pitch products to colleagues at informal lunches and dinners. Eli Lilly reported spending $22 million on 3,400 speaker-physicians during the first nine months of 2009. These doctors “serve as a credible voice in bringing information to their peers,” according to the Lilly Web site.

Though the events are billed as casual conversations, the physi-cians are supposed to adhere strictly to a company-approved script, except during question-and-answer sessions.

Dr. Adriane Fugh-Berman is a physician and associate profes-sor at Georgetown University who heads a group critical of the pharmaceutical industry’s marketing tactics. She said while drug companies might overlook malpractice lawsuits when vetting potential speakers, they should take it more seriously when a doctor has been disci-plined by a state medical board because such actions are so rare.www.tampabay.com

Obesity Associated with Depression & Vice Versaobesity appears to be associated with an increased risk of depression, and depression also appears associated with an increased risk of developing obesity, according to a meta-analysis of previously published studies in recent issue of ar-chives of General Psychiatry, one of the Jama/archives journals. “Both depression and obesity are widely spread problems with major public health implications,” the authors write as back-ground information in the article. “Because of the high prevalence of both depression and obesity, and the fact that they both carry an increased risk for cardiovascular disease, a potential association between depression and obesity has been pre-sumed and repeatedly been examined.” understanding the relationship between the two conditions over time could help improve prevention and intervention strategies. floriana s. luppino, m.D., of leiden univer-sity medical center and GGZ Rivierduinen, leiden, the netherlands, and colleagues analyzed the results of 15 previously pub-lished studies involving 58,745 participants that examined the longitudinal (over time) relationship between depression and over-weight or obesity. “We found bidirectional associations between depression and obesity: obese persons had a 55 percent increased risk of developing depression over time, whereas depressed persons had a 58 percent increased risk of becoming obese,” the authors write. “the asso-ciation between depression and obe-sity was stronger than the association between depression and overweight, which reflects a dose-response gradient.”

HealtHier Men Want More seX, For More years

Healthier men, no matter their age, are going to have better sex more frequently and desire it more often than healthier women. And a healthier sex life could mean a longer life.

That’s according to a paper written by Univer-sity of Chicago researchers that was published recently in the British Medical Journal. While the

supposition that men think about sex more than women isn’t new, the paper’s findings have wider implication for attitudes toward public health and how patients respond to doctors’ advice, said Dr. Stacy Tessler Lindau, an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology and geriatric medicine who spearheaded the research.

“If you are a man diagnosed with diabetes or high blood pressure and I tell you that you need to lose weight and take medication, and I can say the benefit is five extra years of sex life, you might be more inclined to do what I tell you,” she explained.

Lindau said that women generally reported wanting less sex or receiving it less often for three reasons: Women outlive men by an average of five to six years and without a partner, women are less likely to engage in sex. Secondly, there’s a Western cultural acceptance -- and removal of stigma -- of men who have erectile dysfunction and have turned to relatively recently marketed drugs such as Viagra. Lindau’s paper was sponsored by the nonprofit National Institutes of Health.

this is a very good question. When parents bring their child to me for an exam, they frequently come in with knowledge that their

child is having difficulty seeing at a distance. They may observe that their child squints to see the TV or is unable to see signs and buildings while in the car. After a comprehensive eye and vision exam I will often explain that, yes, I can improve their child’s distance vision with glasses. However, there may also be additional visual problems that need to be ad-dressed to improve overall visual function. Sometimes the best way to treat these distance visual problems is with reading glasses. This diagnosis frequently confuses parents. Hopefully this post will help explain why it is necessary.

First, let me explain what types of lenses I am talking about. If a person needs a different lens power for dis-tance viewing than near viewing, then he or she needs either multiple pairs of glasses or a single pair with multiple lens powers. If someone opts to have the all-in-one type, it can be either a bifocal lens (with a line separating the two lenses, distance on the top and reading on the bottom) or a progressive lens (where there is no visible line and the distance lens gradually blends into the near lens).

Which option a patient uses depends on the situ-ation. For example, if a patient needs no distance

lens, then one pair of reading glasses is sufficient. If a patient is too young to use a progressive lens, then a bifocal lens is best. (For the sake of simplicity, I am going to use the words “reading glasses” in the article to mean any of these options.)

Usually a child does not need reading glasses for the same reason that an adult does. When people reach about 40 years of age, they need reading glasses because printed matter has become blurry. Their eyes no longer have the focusing power to make the words clear. Children, on the other hand, usually do have enough focusing power to make words clear. But sometimes it may be difficult or uncomfortable for them to read without developing eyestrain, head-aches, or blurry distance vision. (This is called ac-commodative insufficiency.) Although reading glasses help relax the eyes, making it easier to read without eyestrain, they usually do not solve the underlying problem. Often vision therapy is required to truly solve the focusing problem.

The other main reason that children need reading glasses is that their eyes tend to turn inward a little too much. This tendency to turn in can sometimes be controllable on the child’s part — a condition called esophoria, which doesn’t cause visible changes in the eye but can result in eyestrain or double vision. In other cases, the child cannot control the tendency, resulting in a visibly drifting inward eye (called accommodative esotropia). In both cases, reading glasses will reduce the eyes’ tendency to turn inward. This will relieve the strain on the eyes and may make reading more comfortable.

Also remember that these conditions do not just oc-cur in children. Sometimes adults develop these types of problems and need reading glasses. Also, for both children and adults, sometimes multifocal contact lenses can be used, but patients still need to have ap-propriate backup glasses.

One final note: All children must have shatter-resis-tant lenses. These are made of Trivex or polycarbon-ate. We also recommend a sturdy, easily adjustable frame. All of our frames have a 2-year warranty against breakage, but it can be a good idea to have a backup pair in case of loss.

Tampa Bay Wellness • APRIL 2010 17www.tampabaywellness.com

How does your background inform your work in the health and wellness industry? Have you always been healthy?

I was born in Melbourne, Australia. In my teen years, starting about 15 or 16, I got quite heavy. I actually topped the scale at 248 pounds at 6’3, so I was about 45 pounds overweight. I was an overweight teenager and at the age of 18 I ended up joining a health club in Australia. The manager took a real interest in me and my friend and we lost the weight in about three months. It completely changed our lives. I ended up going over to America at the age of 22, which was about 3 years later, and got involved in the fit-ness business. I was able to take that passion that I developed and apply it in this industry.

What inspired you to open the first Lifestyle Family Fitness Club?

I was managing a club in St. Petersburg. I got to the U.S. in 1972. So about eight years later I was running a club in St. Petersburg and one of the members liked the way I was running the club, and he asked if I would have an interest in going into business with him in Lakeland. He was the investor and I was the operator, and that’s how the first club got started in Lakeland. He had confidence in my ability and I certainly had confidence to go out by myself.

What is the mission of Lifestyle Family Fit-ness?

Our mission is to fulfill our member’s needs and build lasting relationships through a fun and friendly experience. The mission statement is very important to us. We created this back in 2000, along with our BHAG—or Big, Hairy, Audacious, Goal—which was to grow to 50 clubs, which we accomplished in 2007. The mis-sion statement is the thing that all the employees know that we stand by. Fulfilling our member’s needs means members need to get their results. Building lasting relationships: That’s the glue that holds the members to the clubs and enables us to retain members long-term. Through a fun and friendly experience: You’ve got to remember that we’ve got to have fun. The members don’t want to come in and see grumpy faces.

What are some of Lifestyle’s unique offerings?

We’re a full-service facility. What makes us different or unique becomes more important, particularly as there are more and more low price clubs entering the business. One of the things that we feel we do better than most clubs in

Page 18: April '10 Tampa Bay Wellness

America is the group fitness program. We feel that our fitness instructors that offer the group classes are some of the best in the industry. The same goes for our personal trainers. We employ many more personal trainers per club than most clubs in the industry, and we would like to argue that they are the best in the industry.

We also offer a member-friendly experience. We don’t have long-term contracts, and we do offer a 30 day money back guarantee. We try to make it easy for a member to join.

What unexpected challenges have you over-come in the process of expanding?

There were two phases to our growth. The first 17 years we grew to approximately ten loca-tions. Like all small operators, the most difficult thing when you try to grow a company is raising capital for growth and trying to put the right

people in place. It’s a real challenge when you’re a small business and you’re trying to get bigger. So the early challenges that you face are build-ing the team and finding capital. I was able to obtain the capital in 2000 and we grew at a very rapid pace. From 2000 to 2010 we added about another 45 clubs. Our growth has been quite massive in the eight to ten years and the biggest challenge you have there is trying to recruit people: trying to train, develop, and have the right people on the bus.

How far, geographically speaking, has Life-style Family Fitness expanded?

We’re in four states now, so we have 34 clubs in Florida but we have 10 clubs in Columbus Ohio; 6 clubs in North Carolina; and 4 clubs in Indianapolis. The challenge has been where we were virtually a household name in the Florida market and our reputation went with us as we

went into new markets like Orlando and Jack-sonville—we were able to leverage off the history and integrity of the brand—we’ve gone into these new states, we haven’t been well known, and so we’ve had to re-establish the name. In some of those cities we’re at the mercy of the reputations of the clubs that were there. It’s taken us a long while to gain the trust of the consumers. We definitely have that today, but it’s taken us a long while.

How does it feel to be such a big part of something that makes a positive contribution to the community?

It feels wonderful to be honest. It’s a unique busi-ness, and we remind our staff all the time they’re lucky to have a job where they’re on the feet because so many people sit on their bottoms all day these days. The most gratifying thing is that you really are changing the lives of people. When

you see members join and lose 90 lbs like you have, or see senior citizens get involved in the silver sneakers program and they’re able to walk without a walker or get out of the chair, which they couldn’t do 3 months earlier, the return on investment of time when you work with these members is tremen-dous. You would be surprised how many letters we get from our members telling us that.

What are plans for the future?

Our company goals are to continue to grow, to continue to be the best, and to continue to provide a better and more rewarding experience for our members. And for me personally it’s to continue to add value to the company any way that I can.

One thing we do as a company now is we open our doors during the summer to teenagers to free. If you’re a teenager between the ages of 12 and 17, you can use our club for two months free during the summer. It’s our way of giving back to the community and trying to get teenagers to realize that fitness can be fun, that they do fit in, and that it’s not hard to be active. Last year we had 11,000

teenagers use our clubs for free. It’s a program that’s actually being picked up all across the country. Other clubs are doing it now. A lot of our members just bring their kids in, so that they can share the experience with their teenagers. It’s a very successful program.

The other thing that’s interest-ing we have is the Silver Sneakers program. We have 17,000 people over the age of 65 that have access to our clubs for free or by Humana Insurance. It’s quite intriguing to me that insurance companies are starting to realize that investment in fitness is a great way to lower health care claims.

experience the Peace of sri chinmoy’s music at the free

songs of the soul concert

In a creative odyssey that included music, art, literature and sports, Sri Chinmoy composed a monumental total of 21,000 songs and offered more than 770 Peace Concerts in venues from Carnegie Hall to London’s Royal Albert Hall, always

free of charge. For four decades, he served humanity’s aspirations for peace and oneness through his creativity. He moved to the United States in 1964 from his na-tive India and called New York home until his passing in 2007. www.srichinmoy.org

Sri Chinmoy believed that music is a universal language that can carry the listener beyond barriers of race, language and culture. “It is through music,” he wrote, “that the universal feeling of oneness can be achieved in the twinkling of an eye.”

Quincy Jones said of Sri Chinmoy, “I was, am and will always be his biggest fan, for he understood what truly matters most in life: and that is love. His love could fill an ocean.” Leonard Bernstein said, “Sri Chinmoy is a miraculous model of the abundance in the creative life and I can only hope that someday I may participate in that cosmic fountain of stillness and profound energy which he inhabits.” Ravi Shankar said, “Sri Chinmoy has a tremendous, a fantastic creative urge.” Roberta Flack exclaimed, “Sri Chinmoy is the best exponent of honest expression in music. Sri Chinmoy’s music is a magical flow deep down in your heart of hearts.” Clarence Clemons said of Sri Chinmoy’s music, “This is the most powerful and soul-stirring music I have ever heard. It has entered right inside me and left me feeling totally

purified.”

Musicians from around the world will play a variety of exotic and traditional instruments during Songs of the Soul, a free concert held at the Palladium

Theater, Monday, April 19th. Premik Russell Tubbs, formerly with the Mahavishnu Orchestra, will perform on the flute with percussion ac-

companiment. Austrian virtuosos Mandu and Vishuddhi Trummer will delight the audience with their haunting renditions of Sri

Chinmoy’s melodies on Chinese erhu and harp.

The grand finale will feature the Gandharva Loka Or-chestra, led by one of Europe’s most innovative mu-sicians, Panchajanya Burri, along with Amsterdam conductor Matthijs Jongepier. Together they have arranged the compositions of Sri Chinmoy into a symphony of sound for an international choir with eastern and western instruments to create a power-ful and uplifting musical experience.

The concert will be held Monday, April 19 at the Palladium Theater, 243 5th Ave. N, St Petersburg, at 7:30 pm. Admission is free. Although tickets are free, reservations are required. Call 727-725-0013 or visit www.songsofthesoul.com

Walking for Fitness

Walking is a gentle, low-impact exercise that can ease you into a higher level of fitness and health. Walking is one of your

body’s most natural forms of exercise. It’s safe, simple, doesn’t require practice, and the health benefits are many. Here’s more about why walking is good for you, and how to get started with a walking program.

Benefits of WalkinGWalking, like other exercise, can help you achieve a number of important health benefits. Walking can help you:

lower low-density lipoprotein (lDl) cholesterol (the “bad” cholesterol)

Raise high-density lipoprotein (hDl) cholesterol (the “good” cholesterol)

lower your blood pressure

Reduce your risk of or manage type 2 diabetes

manage your weight

improve your mood

stay strong and fit

PRePaRation helPs avoiD inJuRyTake time to prepare yourself to prevent injuries, such as blisters on your feet or muscle pain.

Wear walking shoes and comfortable, protective clothing Before you set out, be sure to select comfortable footwear. Also dress in loosefitting, comfortable clothing and in layers if you need to adjust to chang-ing temperature. If you walk outside, choose clothes appropriate for the weather. Avoid rubberized materi-als, as they don’t allow perspiration to evaporate. Wear bright colors or reflective tape after dark so that motorists can see you.

WaRm uPSpend about five minutes walking slowly to warm up your muscles. You can walk in place if you want. Increase your pace until you feel warm.

stRetchAfter warming up, stretch your muscles before walking. Include the calf stretch, quadriceps stretch, hamstring stretch and side (iliotibial) stretch.

Cool down after each walking session To reduce stress on your heart and muscles, end each walking session by walking slowly for about five minutes. Then, repeat your stretches.

as you Get staRteD, RememBeR to: Start slow and easy. If you’re a seasoned walker, keep doing what you’re doing. If you’ve been inactive and tire easily, it’s best to start slow and easy. At first, walk only as far or as fast as you find comfortable. If you can walk for only a few minutes, let that be your starting point. For example, you might try short daily sessions of five to 10 minutes and slowly build up to 15 minutes twice a week. Then, over several weeks’

time, you can gradually work your way up to 30 to 60 minutes of walking most days each week.

Use proper technique. Walking is a great exercise because it’s so simple to do. But using the correct posture and movements is essential.

Measure the intensity of your workout. As you walk, measure the intensity of your workout by checking your heart rate. Knowing your heart rate allows you to increase the intensity to maximize your workout or slow down to avoid overdoing it.

To find out if you’re exercising within the range of your target heart rate, stop walking to check your pulse manually at your wrist (radial artery) or neck (carotid artery). Another option is to wear an electronic device that displays your heart rate.

Set goals, track progress, stay motivated for success The good news is that walk-ing — even only a modest amount — provides health benefits. For maximum benefits, work your way up to 30 to 60 minutes a day within your target heart rate zone, most days of the week. To achieve these benefits, it can help to set goals, track your progress and take steps to stay motivated.

set Realistic GoalsIf your goal is to walk two hours a day 365 days a year, you might be setting yourself up to fail. Set realistic goals for yourself, such as 30 minutes five days a week.

And you don’t need to do it all at once. Build walking into your sched-ule today. Just do it. For example, walk for 10 minutes on your lunch break.

tRack PRoGRessKeeping a record of how many steps you take, the distance you walk and how long it takes can help you see where you started from and serve as a source of inspiration. Just think how good you’ll feel when you see how many miles you’ve walked each week, month or year.

Record these numbers in a walking journal you create for yourself or log them in a spreadsheet on your computer. Another option is to use an electronic device — such as a pedometer — to calculate time and distance for you.

stay motivateDStarting a walking program takes initiative. Sticking with it takes com-mitment. But when you think of the potential health benefits, it’s well worth your effort. Over time you’ll likely feel more invigorated. To stay motivated:

Make it fun. If you don’t like walking alone, invite your spouse, partner, friend or neighbor to join you. You might also join a health club and use a treadmill.

Vary your routine. Plan several dif-ferent walking routes for variety. But if you’re walking alone, be sure to tell someone which route you’re taking.

Sometimes things happen to keep you from sticking to a regular walking program. Don’t be too hard on your-self when this happens. You don’t have to let a few days off sabotage your plan to reach a higher level of fitness and improved health. Just revisit your goals and get walking.

You’ll be glad you started.

Even though the first steps of any journey can be the most difficult, it helps to keep your goals foremost in your mind. So remember, once you take that first step, you’re on the way to an important destination — better health.

in December, 2001, the U. S. Surgeon General, Dr. David Satcher issued “The Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Prevent and Decrease Overweight and

place? No, the studies show it is not likely to be enough for either purpose.

for Weight man-agement — how much is enough? So how much activity is enough for weight management? There are now some studies suggesting that walking 10,000 steps a day is the right ball park to be in. Several months ago, we decided to purchase a pedometer so that we could figure out how to talk to you about the physical activity goal of “10,000 steps a day.” The pedometer we purchased is of the very simple variety. It tracks steps and that’s it. We didn’t care about tracking miles walked or calories burned or any of the other fancy features that some pedometers offer. We purchased the basic model, which means it was the least expensive — costing less than $30. We learned you can’t just stick it in your pocket. You have to firmly clip it to a belt or waistband around your waist in order for it to work properly.

After wearing the pedometer for a few weeks, we learned that in the normal course of events — just living and working — we took anywhere from 900 to 3000 steps in a day and not much more. In other words, we came to realize that it was pretty nearly im-possible for us to get in 10,000 steps in a day without intentionally going out for a walk (or getting on a treadmill).

here is what we learned about getting started on the 10,000 steps program: To avoid injury, you need to work up slowly. If you have any concerns about your joints (ankles, knees or hips) discuss your exercise plans with your physician.

You will need a good pair of sneakers. We actually prefer a running shoe with plenty of cushion. We noticed that we are wearing out our sneakers and replacing them every six months or so.

Start out by wearing the pedometer each day for two weeks and don’t do anything to change your normal routine. Before you go to bed, take care to log your steps at the end of the day each day for the entire two-week period. At the end of the second week,

take a look at how many steps you are taking each day in the course of living your life. Perhaps on some days it is as few as 700 steps in a day and on other days, it may be as high as 2500 steps.

If you feel comfortable doing so, take the highest number of steps you have walked on any given day and use that number of steps as your daily step goal. Feel free to select a smaller number of steps as your goal if you prefer. To avoid injury, do not select a higher number. Aim for your goal each day for the next two weeks. Let’s assume your first step goal is 2500 steps. That means that for the next two weeks, you are going to try to walk 2500 steps each day. Before bedtime each night, be sure to log in the number of steps you actually took.

At the end of that two-week period, review all the steps you took each day and decide if you are ready to add another 500 steps to your goal. Your new step goal is now 3000 steps a day for the next two-week period.

Continue in that manner, working up as slowly as you wish, until you finally reach the goal of 10,000 steps a day.

Check with your physician if you experience any pain or discomfort that concerns you. We consider pain a warning signal that something may be wrong. Our goal is to keep you active for the rest of your life. So don’t go overboard and pull a muscle that will put you out of commission. Take it slow. Take it easy.

i hate to Walk, But i like to ....If you really can’t stand to walk but you like to jog or run — Go ahead and get your steps in with jogging or running. A pedometer can track your steps whether you are moving slow or fast. If you use special exercise equipment or if you like to bicycle, swim or kayak, we discovered our pedometer does not help us keep track of our activity. Even on a stair stepper or stair climber in the gym, it was not accurate. But not to worry, you can “translate” your 10,000 step goal into an equivalent time goal for your favorite activity.

Fish oil has been touted as the miracle supplement for the last few years with indisputable health benefits.

However, ABC News recently reported that industrialization has polluted waterways, and subsequently both fish oil and omega three fatty acid supplements.ChicagoHealers.com practitioner, Dr. Tom Bayne, DC and digestive health expert, explains the new health risks of these important supplements and offers tips for making sure your supplement is safe.

reasons to be cautious:

• Toxic chemicals and carcinogenic sub-stances are rampant in our water supplies and oceans. Fish store these toxic wastes in their fat tissue.

• A recent test by environmentalists showed a very disturbing trend. Many commer-cially available fish oils were very high in PCB’s. PCB’s are industrial chemicals that were banned back in the 1970s because they cause cancer and birth defects.

• Quality manufacturers have been aware of this trend for decades. Now, as ABC has reported, a lawsuit is being brought against fish oil producers and retailers like GNC, CVS, Rite Aid, and Omega Protein.

• The process of molecular distillation removes PCB’s, heavy metals, and other toxic chemicals from the fat of the fish oil leaving only the healthy omega 3 rich oil behind. It is a process that adds to the cost of the fish oil, but as the research shows, it is a necessary step.

be on the lookout for:

• The Label- If your fish oil does not say “Molecularly Distilled” on the label then it most certainly contains pollutants that you would not want to put in your body.

• PCP Levels- Avoid products with more than 90 nanograms of PCP

• The Brand-Results from scientists test showed that three of the ten brands tested Nature Made Cod Liver Oil, and Now Foods’ Salmon Oil and Double Strength Cod Liver Oil -- contained much more than that.

And what are you doing all this for? What’s the target? Visit your vision daily, it’s to really think about it and visualize your vision. It would be great if every morning you gave a couple minutes of thought, or meditation, and visualized your vision; meaning that you actually see yourself living in that fully fulfilled place, wherever it is and in all parts of your life, not only just your world of work but your health and relationships.

When there are wires crossed, we oftentimes have what we call a values conflict. And a values conflict can be extremely draining and extremely stressful. Write out your goals, and then check in with them occasionally to make sure that you’re actually living in alignment with them.

If your support system that’s lacking, then it’s a great time to start beefing that up, because you’re going to find that your support communities will really help you to not only achieve your goals, but they’ll also help you with things like boundaries. They’ll help you with things like creating a powerful vision. They’ll remind you and help hold you accountable, and they’ll help you to see your blind spots, those areas that you might not otherwise be aware of.

5feeD youR minD, BoDy, heaRt & soulFeed your mind with good thoughts, posi-tive thoughts and with images of success

and happiness. Feed your body and take good care of it. Feed your body good food, regular exercise and rest. Make sure your body gets the maintenance that it needs. Feed your heart with what t really gets you passionate…those things that really light you up more than anything else. And what feeds you spiritually? For some people it might be something as traditional as going to a church service. For other people it might be practicing yoga. For others it might be dancing or singing or writing. And for even others, it’s going out in nature or watching a sunset.

6keeP What is most imPoRtant most imPoRtant“The most important thing about the

most important thing is to keep the most important thing the most important thing.” That may sound like a bunch of doubletalk, but it isn’t. What this is refer-

ring to is what it is that you truly value. This is what defines your boundaries and reinforces your vision and your goals. If there is something you truly value but you don’t protect, it’s then easy to lose track of your values and get led astray. Know what it is that’s most important. Know what it is that you truly value, and then keep and maintain that.

7consciously BReathe, smile & lauGhWe have become a culture of shallow

breathers. Practice yoga and you’ll become a more conscious breather. And then there’s smiling. When you smile, you automatically release endorphins, which are the “feel good” neuro-hormones. Smiling will always make you feel good. And laughter probably speaks for itself. Laughter is such a wonderful medicine. Laughter is actually probably one of the best natural medicines we can ever engage in.

everywhere I turn everyday, I encounter people who are unhappy with some aspect of themselves

or of their lives. They are not just at my psychotherapy practice or the community clinic I volunteer in. I encounter them at church, at nightclubs, at the health club, at the convenience store, at the Symphony, at professional gatherings. Something is wrong and they need it to get better. They are everywhere. They are us.

After years of encounters with people who need to make changes in their lives, I find that some get better, and some are stuck. What’s different about those that make the changes and get better? What do they have that the stuck ones don’t?

We know that those who don’t accept responsibility, who blame others for everything and want someone else to fix things, don’t get better. And we know that nothing changes unless action is taken. But where do we get the motivation to act when it has been elusive? Where do we get the energy when we have been drained?

If energy has been a problem, if motivation has been short-lived or nonexistent, you must first ask yourself if you have been open to it. If you’ve been fighting off illness or depression, the first order of business is to get well —to treat the disorder, to see a professional and get the illness diagnosed and properly treated. If you have a broken leg, it is futile and self-defeating to insist on standing and getting to work before you let it heal. You would simply fail and further injure yourself. It is

the same with other maladies. You need to treat things that are broken, and rest and heal before you go off to battle. Get a check up, talk about your condition, and then listen.

But being open to the motivational energy you need is more than a clinical issue. It is a spiritual issue, an issue that involves the human and the divine within us. The word enthusiasm speaks of the spirit or God (theos) within us. Enthusiasm is a passion that moves us to act, and we summon this by embracing the passions of our life, the things that make us suffer (pathos) and the things we desire.

When we suffer pain, our natural healthy response is to change things, to take our hand from the hot stove. We aren’t dispassionate. We admit the pain and respond. We don’t deny the pain. That’s a good thing. Pain motivates us. Some say that nothing changes if we are comfortable, that suffering is what summons the energy and spirit we need to take the actions required. This is true, but it is not the whole truth.

Healthy desire is a good thing. Being dispassionate may be “cool” but it is a denial of both the human and divine in us. Let yourself have a lust for what is good and healthy in life. You have a right by birth to what you can make of life, living in harmony with it. You deserve the good things that you know exist, as much as any of the other fellow beings you have seen enjoy-ing them. The blessings of life are for you as much as anyone.

To solve our problems and achieve our most cherished goals, we will need to take responsibility, expecting no one else to do our job. And we must take action, be willing to expend the effort and do the work. But we must summon the spirit and energy—invite it, em-brace it, let it live within us and let it move us. To get motivated to change, we must allow the enthusiasm, the desire, the passion and spirit to live in us and grow.

So dream of what you would have in your life. Believe that there is a spirit and energy in you that can create and make things happen, that can make plans you haven’t made before, and take actions you’ve not taken yet. With it, things can happen you’ve never dreamed possible. l
