Pastor Larry Writes… What makes a church vital? That is a question being asked across the

denomination, and the answers being given are interesting. A denominational study several years

ago suggested vital churches typically have four factors that make them vital, and size of

congregation is not one of them. The four factors include: worship that includes a mix of what people call “traditional” and

“contemporary”, with an emphasis on sermons that are relevant; small groups and

programs that allow people to connect with meaning; pastoral mentoring and coaching of lay people in ministry; and an emphasis on

effective lay leadership. There is nothing in the study that said

effective outreach or evangelism made for vitality, nor was there evidence that an

intense focus on discipleship made for a vital church. A new article suggests “vitality” may

not be all it’s cracked up to be. Instead of vitality, churches should strive to be

authentic, hopeful and try to make their communities better. This kind of church appeals especially to younger people, who do

not want to be caught up in politics of any kind (including church politics!)

I think one of the best things about Mt. Sylvan is that it is a real community, filled with struggling sinners who are trying to do

their best, and make a difference in the world. Worship styles come and go; love

endures, as does the capacity to do good. A real church, filled with loving and giving people. Now, that’s vital.

Peace,

Pastor Larry

Discipleship, Jay Butler. Jay has

accepted the position of Minister of Youth and Discipleship at

Mt. Sylvan Church. He will start work

on April 11 and be introduced to the congregation at worship

on April 17. Jay is from Georgia, and attended the University of Georgia and Candler School of

Theology at Emory University in Atlanta. He has several years of experience in youth

ministry, most recently in High Point, NC. He enjoys reading, video games, and is a fervent Atlanta Braves and University of

Georgia fan. Jay can be reached at [email protected]. You can also look for him

Nursery Volunteer Needed

Mt. Sylvan’s Sunday morning nurseries are in

great need of volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering in the nurseries or any of the children’s Sunday school classrooms (adults

and high school youth are welcomed to volunteer) contact Hannah Nguyen at 919-

815-1854 or by email at

[email protected].

Safe Sanctuaries Training

Safe Sanctuaries Training will be held

immediately following the nursery volunteer training on June 12 at 3:00 pm, in the Armstrong Room. If you need to be certified,

Calling all sprouts!

It’s time to plant our Kinder Garden!

To prepare the garden for the Kids’ Summer Gardening Program,

we have scheduled two plant days. On Saturday, April 2 and again on Saturday, April 16 we are encouraging all past and future gardeners to “put on your garden boots and gloves” and

meet us under the big tree at 8:30. We will be planting all kinds of vegetables as well as creating our Rainbow of Flowers. A light

snack will be provided. Please contact Kathy Powell at [email protected] to let her if know you are planning to

come one or both of these days..

Registration for our Children’s Summer Program “Garden Pair-of-

Bulls (Parables)” will begin at the end of April.. Contact Kathy

for more information.

VBS Registration Now Open! Preregistration for VBS week, which will be held July 10-14 from 5:30-8:30 pm each evening,

is now open. You are encouraged to register early by going to the church website at

www.mtsylvan.org and clicking on the VBS slide (located on the home page). Our theme this year for VBS is Egypt: Joseph's Journey from Prison to Palace. We will be traveling back in

time to visit Joseph in prison and the palace, get to shop in an authentic Egyptian marketplace, and play games just like the Egyptian children did. It is going to be a wonderful adventure you

don't want to miss!

Basic Emergency Supply Kit With spring, there is always a chance of tornadoes. Our Church families, friends, and neighbors should have some basic supplies on hand to survive at least three days in an emergency. Below is a list of basic items every emergency supply kit should include:

Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days for drinking and sanitation

Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food

Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries

Flashlight and extra batteries

First aid kit

Whistle to signal for help

Dust mask to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place

Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation

Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities

Manual can opener for food

Local maps

Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger

It is important that you review this list and consider where you live and the unique needs of your family to create an emergency supply kit that meets your needs. You should consider having emergency supply kits at home and smaller portable kits at your workplace, vehicle or other places they spend time. B. Pinkerton

Emergency Medical Information Envelope The purpose of the Emergency Medical Information Envelope is to provide critical medical information to emergency responders in a medical emergency when a patient is unable to communicate or care takers are unable to provide medical information. It contains information that helps paramedics determine if a patient is on medications or has medical conditions as they enter the house. This information is vital in an emergency and not always available. There is also information concerning an individual’s physician. We recommend you place the form in a business envelope and tape to your refrigerator in plain sight. You can get a copy of the Vial of Life form at http://www.dconc.gov/home/showdocument?id=2437 or the Church Office. We recommend this information be updated every year. J. Polhamus

UMCOR Early Response Team (ERT) Early Response Teams (ERTs) fill a need in the early days after a disaster to clean flood-damaged homes, remove debris, place tarps on homes, and help to prevent further damage, while providing a caring Christian presence.

ERTs are not first-responder emergency workers nor do they recover, rebuild, or repair. Under specific guide-lines, ERTs assist survivors, without further harm or burden to the affected community.

Mt Sylvan UMC is forming an UMCOR ERT / CERT to support northern Durham County and Corridor District in times of need. To become a member requires 6 hours of basic ERT member training. The first training will be held in Mt. Sylvan’s Armstrong Room #1 on April 16, 2016 from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM (lunch provided).

Basic ERT Training participants learn the basics of disaster response, including how to stabilize and secure homes safely, and how to work effectively with survivors and others on the response team. This standardized class is required for the basic ERT UMCOR identification badge.

Please call (919-471-0032) or email the Church office ([email protected]) to sign up. Lunch will be provided. T. Rhodes
