largest astronomical observatory in the country. However, the physical structure and its manynuances make for its worldwide fame as awondrous architectural structure in pink granite.Another distinction it holds is that all the pinkgranite stone used to build these great buildingscame from quarries within the campus area.

This distinctive university is known for manyreasons – it was the first learning centre of itskind in South India, the first university in thecountry where the medium of learning was notEnglish, but Urdu, and one housing the second

Built during an era of a flurry of architecturalactivity by rulers equally interested in educationand the art of construction, the OsmaniaUniversity stands like a grand edifice in granite. Its 1,500-acre campus, housing the imposing ArtsCollege and equally artistic and imposingbuildings housing other faculties make it an

exemplary edifice of architectural distinction anduniqueness. There is a marked fusion ofarchitectural styles with motifs of medievalMuslim, Arabic, Moorish and Gothic schools ofarchitecture. The architects, Ali Raza and Zain Yar Jung, studied various educational architectural stylesby travelling the entire world.Madras to Colombo and then to Japan where theyvisited the University of Osaka. Then to the westsuch asthe US, studying the architectural stylesof older universities like Princeton, Harvard andYale and the more recent campuses of California,Stanford and New York. From here they went toto England to study older universities like Oxford,Cambridge, Edinburgh and Manchester.Grand synthesisThe seventh Nizam, Osman Ali Khan, said at theopening of the university: “The architectural styleof the Arts College is like the Urdu language, themanifestation of the Hindu and Muslim styles ofarchitecture and its façade, its pillars and its portalsportray the cultureand arts of the twopeople.”…indeed, a treatise on grandiosearchitecture. Imposing, striking, grandiose, ornateare just some of the many terms one can use todescribe this beautiful cluster of buildings.Gem of OU campusThe Arts College building is the most stately, ornate and majestic structure reached by the greatwelcome arch built in granite, seemingly supportedby two soaring, round and polished granitecolumns. This vertical arch stands out from the facade andrises higher than the sidewalls and wings of thestructure and is crowned by a trefoil arch, whichpeaks higher than the walls of the edifice to eithersides of the portal. The arch houses a semicircularvault with ‘stalactites’ resulting in a synthesis ofseveral major architectural themes of arch andmonumental portal .

Wehope that the new ChiefMinister will, through hisdynamic leadership, takeforward the State in allspheres and make it a rolemodel in the country.APREDA wishes him welland success in all hisendeavours.

A perfect gift for newlyweds and even singles, who can use it toenhance their love life, the Mandarin ducks are regarded as the mosttraditional and potent symbol of love and married bliss in Feng Shui

practice. A pair of Mandarin ducks symbolise happiness in love and issuggestive of romance, devotion, affection, conjugal fidelity, together-ness and enduring love.Mandarin ducks are a powerful cure to attract or enhance love andrelationships. For singles, the pair of Mandarin ducks will increase thechances of finding love partners; for lovers, it will bring marriage op-

portunities; and for married couples, a pair of Mandarin duckswill ensure a glorious, eventful marriage with conju-

gal bliss and a peaceful life between spouses. For added benefits, sometimes a pair ofMandarin ducks is accompanied withlotus flowers and leaves, and is shownbiting the stems of lotus pods with manylotus seeds in them.

While Mandarin ducks are famous andstrong symbols of fidelity and love, the lo-

tus plant plays many roles in this auspicioussymbol of love.Regarded as a good fortune

flower by many Feng Shui masters, the lotusis said to turn bad luck into good

luck and heighten one’s senseof joy and peace. It is a symbol

of harmony and purity. And be-cause lotus leaves protect the fish

under them and fish are regardedas abundance, it also suggests

that your wealth is pro-tected.Lotus seed in Chinese is‘lian jee’, which soundslike a phrase that means‘every year you have ason.’
