With the economy in such bad shape, what happens to “green” initiatives set up in better times? Recycled aluminum and glass now rebate at a fraction of what they brought a year ago, at a time where city recycling programs are strapped for cash. Polls show that fewer people believe that global warming is a serious problem when stacked up against the need for more jobs. Fledgling solar energy businesses have been starved out of the marketplace by the lack of available credit.

And yet, during these hard times, there is a return to a more prudent consumer behavior that may, in the long run, do more for “green initiatives” than was possible during the go-go years. Americans are having to downsize and make do with what they have, not what they can borrow. Many people who are out of work, or living in reduced circumstances are turning once again to barter and local exchanges. One of my favorite sites is freecycle.org, but there are other co-ops, neighborhood assistance programs and community gardens springing up across the country. Whether we wanted to or not, as a nation, we have had to become more prudent in how we consume.

This month KCSM is highlighting these two trends; environmentally friendly practices and prudent financial management with a shows such as A Thousand Suns: Food, Ecology and Religion in the 21st Century and Facing The Mortgage Crisis. If there is some good to come out of this long and deep recession, perhaps it is that we learn to pay a little more attention to wise management of our personal resources, which in turn helps create a more sustainable rate of consumption for our entire planet.

Happy watching!

Sincerely,Sinclair CrockettBusiness and Fundraising Manager

Today's focus on green building is giving us a better understanding of the potential impacts our school buildings have, not only on the environment, but on our children's health and development. Armed with this new knowledge, many school districts across the country are taking "green" to a new level, and this green-school movement is positioned to become a significant contributor to improving our nation's environmental and public health.

Growing Greener Schools

Discover one of the world's last bastions of biological and cultural diversity—the Gamo Highlands of Ethiopia. Isolated in the African Rift Valley, the area has been densely populated—and sustainable—for 10,000 years. With extra-ordinary agricultural diversity it is the birthplace of an large number of varieties of plants and is sustained by a social system that has ensured the survival of 54 tribal groups.

Part documentary, part theatrical play, discover the final two days Henry David Thoreau spent in his cabin before leaving Walden Pond. The play dramatizes conversations between Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson as Thoreau was packing up to leave Walden Pond, while the documentary, which was filmed at the actual cabin site in the woods, looks at the life of Thoreau. Also explored is the role we play in the protection of the earth.

Discover the remarkable story of the fiery collapse and rebuilding (in only 26 days!) of a key connector in the Bay Area's MacArthur Maze, where three major freeways meet just east of the San Francisco—Oakland Bay Bridge. The educational and entertainment aspects of the special 3-D animation depicts the accident and rebuilding, while a humorous cartoon animatio portrays key moments in the story.
