Building Reconstruction Update:

April 27-May 1: More classrooms now have carpeting; the tod-

dler room, 1 & 2nd grade, and Sojourners. The 5th grade room

will be soon. More of the hallway has been tiled. A steel frame

has been installed in the sanctuary. It will hold the new wall of

glass. Impressive!

May 2-8: Furniture moved out and back into office suite & work

room.

May 18-22: Kitchen flooring

installed

Listening and Learning

This time last year, Shane Schenkel (then chair of Staff Relations) and I had a

conversation about continuing education options for me for the year. We

talked about conferences and course offerings, and then he made a suggestion:

“why don't you just take a tent and a pile of books and go camping?” I could

have kissed him. Because not only did Shane (and the congregation as a

whole) understand the need for continuing education for clergy and church

leaders, but he also understood me. He knew that there was a certain wisdom

to attending conferences, to learning in community and in person. But there

is also something to be gained by learning in solitude, in a quiet setting along-

side of wise and learned authors.

Last week, I had the opportunity to do both. I spent the first three days with

a peer group at a retreat center in Missouri, learning from one another and

under the direction of Drs. Keith Herron and Steve Graham in the area of

narrative leadership. Then, I spent the next three days camping in the Ozarks,

led by wise authors such as Phyllis Tickle, Phillip Yancey, Mark Achtemeier,

and David Lose.

I feel blessed over and again for the opportunity. Blessed by a congregation

that supports its pastors. Blessed by a family willing to adapt in the midst of a

busy life. Blessed by those whom God has placed in my journey to share wis-

dom, challenge, and vision. And blessed by the chance to listen and learn in

the midst of God’s creation. Thank you for your part in that blessing.
