H ere is my eclectus parrot. I named him

Leo and he is my baby! I rescued him and have had him for about four and a half years--he is about seven years old. My husband and I have loved taking care of him and giving him a loving home. He is super sweet

and outgoing. Anytime there is a new person he wants to check them out. He loves eating apples, bananas and vegetables like soybeans, peas, garbanzo beans and other veggies. He also likes spaghetti noodles and oatmeal. He loves baths and also talks and

makes funny noises. Leo also imitates laughing, coughing and whistling. Here are just a few of the words that he knows: “Te amo” -- “I Love You” in Spanish, “Good Night Leo”, “Step Up”, “Whatcha’ Doing Leo”, “I Love You Amber” and “I am so cute”.

FROM THEMANAGER

It’s been another great month at Post Addison Circle. If you haven’t had a chance to make any of our resident events, please make plans to join

us in April. We had a spectacular turn out at the Polk-A-Dot Bakery Wine Tasting in March. Lots of success at the Pastazio’s Poker Night too. Come join in the fun and meet some of your amazing Post Addison Circle neighbors.

April marks the start of our Beautiful Balcony of the Month Contest. I love seeing all of the colorful flowers, wreaths, and potted plants on your patios and front doors. It’s not necessary to have a lot in order for your balcony to be chosen as a winner. Sometimes the simplest is the most beautiful.

Don’t forget, if you have a beautiful balcony that you would like to showcase or if you know someone else who does, send the apartment number at [email protected]. Entries need to be sent prior to the 10th of the month. We will vote and the winner will be announced in the next month’s newsletter. Good luck!

Have a beautiful month,

Five million hits on YouTube in three months is a phenomenal accomplishment, but 2Cellos is an extraordinary duo. Longtime friends and former cello rivals Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser have taken the world by storm with masterful versions of well- known rock and pop songs. Their YouTube video sensation in 2011—a passionate dueling-cello version of Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal”—was just the beginning. After signing with Sony Masterworks, they released 2Cellos, a rousing debut featuring their unique spin on hits by Guns N’ Roses, U2, Coldplay and Kings of Leon and more. CAN DIET SODA CAUSE WEIGHT GAIN?Diet soda may seem a healthier option than sugary drinks, but it may cause weight gain and contribute to obesity.

For decades, people have turned to diet soft drinks as a healthier alternative to regular soft drinks. However, consuming diet soda on a regular basis may have some serious health ramifications, including weight gain.

It may seem counterintuitive to suggest that diet sodas may be causing people to gain weight, particularly because these sodas are commonly consumed by people who are trying to lose weight. However, artificial sweeteners found in some diet sodas may

DRINKING JUST ONE 12-OUNCE CAN OF AN ARTIFICIALLY SWEETENED FIZZY DRINK PER WEEK CAN INCREASE YOUR RISK OF TYPE 2 DIABETES BY 33%.

increase a person’s risk of obesity. It’s not entirely what you are eating that can cause weight gain but what the body thinks it is eating (or drinking) that plays a role.

There are two factors at play with regard to the artificial sweetener conundrum. First, the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio has researched the potential link between obesity and artificial sweeteners. Researchers have found that something in the chemical structure of these sweeteners alters the way the brain processes the neurotransmitter serotonin. In addition to helping with sleep, mood and other functions in the body, serotonin helps tell the body when it is full. When natural foods and sugars are consumed, serotonin signals to the brain to turn off your body’s appetite. However, artificial sweeteners may prolong the release of serotonin, and your appetite remains in full force long after it should have abated.

Another component of artificial sweeteners, particularly aspartame, is that these chemicals can trick the body into thinking it has, in fact, consumed sugar. That triggers the pancreas to produce the insulin needed to regulate blood-glucose levels. It also causes the body to store the glucose as fat. This can lead to low blood sugar, which may cause you to eat a sugary treat in response. Having diet soda or eating a sugarless item once in a while won’t create

any long-term effects. But repeatedly relying on artificial sweeteners could affect appetite and change blood sugar levels for good. These aren’t the only consequences to diet soda and other beverages. Drinking diet soda regularly may affect cardiovascular health. According to the American Heart Association, research presented at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference found people who drink diet soda every day have a 61 percent higher risk of vascular events than those who reported no soda consumption.

Regular soda isn’t a better alternative. It can contribute to weight gain and cardiovascular issues as well as an increased risk for diabetes. A 2011 review published in the journal Circulation stated that a positive association has been shown between sugar-sweetened soft drink consumption and weight gain in both children and adults.

Nutritionists and doctors have advised that instead of adding artificial sweeteners to water and other beverages, flavor them with lemon or lime juice. Instead of drinking diet soda, opt for unsweetened tea or plain water.Although diet soda may seem a likely option to help curb calories and prevent weight gain, such beverages may actually be having an adverse effect on a person’s weight.

traveler

Why Travel to Ecuador? 1. Four regions in one country: though relatively tiny, Ecuador boasts the world treasure of the Galapagos Islands, the warm and sunny Pacific coast, the majes-tic Andes mountain range, the Amazonian rain forest.

2. A nature lover’s paradise: Ecuador is one of 17 countries in the world classified as “megadiverse” by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Orga-nization (UNESCO), with an incredible vari-ety of birds, mammals and orchids. In fact Ecuador is the most megadiverse country per square kilometre in that list.

3. Ethnic diversity: home to 17 distinct indigenous groups and 27 different ethnic groups, many of which preserve their languages, traditions, and dress to a remarkable degree, Ecuador is a multicul-tural wonder.

4. A birdwatcher´s dream come true: with 1,640 species of birds (a world record per square meter) and 132 species of hummingbirds alone, Ecuador is unques-tionably one of the worlds’ best birding destinations.

5. Geography and history: with historic haciendas, ethnographic museums, art galleries, and the “”Middle of the World” monument, Ecuador possesses a fascinat-ing historical legacy.

6. Unique and delicious cuisine: in Ecuador you can taste flavors from the highlands “locro” (potato cheese soup) to the refreshing shrimp ceviche (marinated seafood cocktail) of the coast.

7. The Galapagos Islands: recognized in 1978 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the archipelago is home to a stunning volcanic landscape, turquoise waters, and hundreds of endemic species.

8. The Amazon Region: within the dense green vegetation of Ecuadorean Amazon

can be found and an abundance of unique flora and fauna, along with an opportunity for unforgettable adventure. Thirty percent of Ecuador’s Amazon jungle basin is made up of natural parks and reserves.

9. Cayambe Volcano: at 4690 meters, Cayambe is the highest point in the world to cross the equator. It is also the only snowcapped place that crosses the equa-tor. The hike to the highest peak has been a favorite since Edward Whymper first reached it in 1880.

10. Cultural Heritage: both Cuenca and Quito have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO and offer a variety of ac-tivities for visitors, including museums, art galleries, antique shops, fine restaurants and coffee shops.

11. An endless array of adventures: only in Ecuador can you climb the tallest active volcano in the world, kayak the rapids of the Amazon rainforest, and crisscross the Equatorial line on horse-back, all in one trip. You can enjoy a mix of adventure, wildlife, culture, community in less than 2 hours from the main cities.

12. Sustainable tourism: conserva-tion and responsible tourism is a priority in Ecuador, and travelers have plenty of opportunities to contribute to the local economy and be active participants in the growth of ecotourism projects.

13. Eternal spring-like weather: Ecuador enjoys mild spring-like weather conditions year-round, creating an ideal environment for the country’s rich fauna and flora to flourish and its people to enjoy a laid-back lifestyle.

14. Easy to travel to: US and interna-tional airlines offer flights of 4 - 6 hours from Miami and New York, the local transportation network is reliable, and English is commonly spoken in major travel destinations.

15. Something for everyone: Ecuador has plenty to offer just about any type of traveler, from adventure seekers to eco-tourists, history buffs to honeymooners, families to those looking to learn Spanish in a comfortable environment - Ecuador and Galapagos has it all.
