APRIL 2012

I pretty much spent most of my kid days in Okinawa and during my time growing up, I remember my mother always taking us to a town on the western side of Okinawa (facing East China Sea) called “Yomitan.” It’s mainly an agricultural and crafts village with its economy supported by crops, such as chrysanthemums (a symbol of Japan), sugar cane, and the beni imo (purple sweet potato). Everyone in Hawaii knows it as Okinawan sweet potato.

Mom liked Yomitan because of all the cool pottery they made at the village… Boy, she had a lot on display at home, I was always in trouble with mom because I would play Nerf Basketball or Football in the house. Bad combo yeah, lots of pottery on display and a wild kid running around…Yes, I did break a few and man she would scold me for days… Sometimes when I broke a vase or cup I would use Super Glue to fix it… Super Glue at the time was the new glue that was supposed to fix everything. I broke so many that I got really

good at using super glue, but 9 times out of 10 as soon as mom came home she knew right off the bat that I broke something in the house… not sure how she know but, I guess moms have that 6th sense.

The ones that were real rare, my mom put them in the glass case or in storage. I remember a couple potteries that were real cool. One is a cup with a dragon’s head right in the middle. The cup is called “Hara Hachi Bu”

which means Stomach 80% full. The Okinawan’s believed in eating only until you feel about 80% full. That’s because it takes about 20 minutes or so for your stomach receptors to tell your body how full it really is. So the cup is supposed

to symbolize the way you should eat. The top of the dragon’s head represents where the 80% line is in the cup… but, if you fill it past the dragon’s head, all of the liquid in the cup will drain out of a hole at the bottom of the cup… Pretty cool, yeah? I can’t figure out how it works, and to think it’s hand-made pottery.

I also wanted to show you one more cool item… It’s a Sake Pouring Bottle with a cup set. The Sake Pouring Bottle only pours just enough to fill the cup that

comes with the set. Then you have to return the bottle to the original positon and pour again… I guess it’s made so if you get too drunk you won’t over fill your cup… Naw, not sure why it’s like that, but my mother said this one is an antique.

Tai Chi May Help Parkinson’s Patients Regain Balance

A few years back I went to some beginner Thai Chi class and after about a month of going once a week, I started noticing I was sleeping well and my wife told me I seemed more relaxed. My blood pressure actually dropped. Unfortunately, I didn’t continue to the next advanced level. I forgot why I didn’t continue, but I wish I would of. Then maybe I wouldn’t be on meds for my blood pressure. Anyways, enough about myself, the reason I am telling you this is because I saw an interesting article about Tai Chi that I pasted below... Check it out, it’s pretty interesting.

Tai Chi, the Chinese martial art involving slow and rhythmic movement, has been shown to benefit older people by maintaining balance and strength. Now, researchers have found that Tai Chi also helps patients who suffer from Parkinson’s disease.

Leona Maricle was diagnosed with Parkinson’s two years ago. At the time, she was teaching math and she says she had experienced the telltale tremors of Parkinson’s for a number of years. She learned how to cope. “The students began to notice that my hands were trembling,” she recalls, “so I started learning how to compensate by keeping that hand under the table and using the other hand to pass out papers, interact with students and hand out pencils.” But soon it became clear that Maricle just couldn’t give teaching her “best” anymore. She retired at age 67. Parkinson’s disease, a progressive disorder of the nervous system, affects movement and motor control. “I would need to think two or three times about moving a particular part of my body,” says Maricle. “When I was sitting in a chair and needed to get up, it would take two or three mental messages to my muscles to actually move my body.”

Maricle had difficulty walking upstairs, downstairs, to the car or down the street. So it’s no wonder that, when she heard about a new study at the nearby Oregon Research Institute to look at the potential benefits of Tai Chi for Parkinson’s patients, she jumped at the chance. Hoping for help but also loving all things Chinese, Maricle saw the study as a perfect fit for her.

The study, which appears in the current New England Journal of Medicine, was headed by research scientist Fuzhong Li, who practices Tai Chi himself. Tai Chi is sometimes described as “meditation in motion,” because it promotes serenity through gentle movements, connecting the mind to the body. It has been shown to help with loss of balance during normal aging and can help relieve stress. Typically, the positions and postures of Tai Chi involve slow, focused movements that flow from one to the next.

In the study, Li divided Parkinson’s patients into three groups. One group did resistance training with weights. Another, stretching classes. And the third took up Tai Chi. Each group participated in a 60-minute class twice a week for six months. When they finished, Li found that the Tai Chi patients were stronger and had much better balance than the patients in the other two groups. In fact, Li says their balance was “four times better than those patients assigned to the stretching group and about two times better than those in the resistance-training group.”

This led to significantly fewer falls for patients in The Tai Chi group. Maricle says that before Tai Chi, she would lose her balance eight to 10 times a day. Now it hardly ever happens. She recently even saved herself from what would have been a sure fall before Tai Chi. It was raining and dark, and she tripped on the curb as she got out of her car. She was able to hop onto the curb and steady herself. “That would have been a fall for sure six or eight months ago,” she says.

Researchers don’t know exactly how Tai Chi works to restore balance. UCLA psychiatrist and brain scientist Michael Irwin says it may work by literally re-training areas of the brain that control movement. “There’s a memory component of our nerves, and they’re receiving signals from our body all the time that are integrated by the brain,” Irwin says. “And it may be that what happens with tai chi is that it’s bringing awareness of the brain to these areas of the body” — thereby strengthening those areas of the brain.

Hawaiian South Shore is one of the few surf shops with the New Fred Rubble with Round Tail... Check out the article form StabMag below:

Remember last year when we were all sporting Dumpster Divers? But, just when we presumed late 2011 was going to be all Neck Beards (Reynolds’ latest model) out pops Conner Coffin’s Fred Rubble. Forgiving rocker, kinda thick, easy to pilot in smaller and not-so-small waves, it has become the kayak of choice among good surfers. And the best surfer of ‘em all is Kelly Slater, whose Rubble slit the throats of his opponents at Trestles. Stab engaged the Champ in a brief convo re: his Rubb.

Stab: How diff is your version of the Rubb to Connor’s or the off-the-shelf models? Kelly: He usually rides squashes. My pulled-in tail just gives a little more bite through the turns. It’s also epoxy and has a good spring to it which I don’t feel on my regular boards as much.Stab: Y’on a five nine? What are the complete dimensions, including the beak and the stern, and the bottom shape? Kelly: Don’t know all the dims offhand. Maybe 12” nose, 18 3/8” width, 14 1/4” at the stern and, yep, a 5’9”. Single-to-double concave, I believe.Stab: Y’ever ride it much as a five-finner? And what would motivate the switch to five? When do you prefer three over five etc? And what fins do you prefer? Kelly: Not yet. Flatter waves bring in the quad and five option. I use the K2.1’s in front

and my quad set back fins. The fifth is a little mini keel thing a friend gave me.Stab: Is this the lil tiger y’won NYC on as well? Kelly: I broke the NY one. This is just a Trestles special.Stab: Is this an epoxy? Kelly: Oui.Whats your wax regime? Are you on the Brazilian FU program? How long do you keep your wax on before scooping it all off? Are you into base coats, top coats etc? Kelly: I use Sex Wax base and maybe a Fu dusting over the top. Apparently, Sex Wax has a comparable one I have yet to try.Stab: What thrills you about the rounded pin tails? Kelly: More drive and control than squash but not as much lift for air sections.

New Dumpster:The original hybrid board shorter, wider and more fun. Dane Reynolds discovered it and set a change in surfboard design. Works good in all conditions. Very user friendly. It’s one of Channel Island’s most popular models.

New 2012 sizes coming in late Late April/Early May.

New Neckbeard:The 2012 Neckbeard tail was taken directly from Dane’s hand-drawn template. Dane kept the overall generous plan-shape to provide a skatey feel but the tail refinement allows for slightly more back foot sensitivity. Light single concave and vee out the back, increased rail-to-rail transition and wider through the nose and tail.

Novice to expert : Knee high to slightly overhead. New 2012 sizes coming in late Late April/Early May.

Floating Sidewalk:The Floating Sidewalk is based on the classic nose riders of the 60’s, with modern updates. The rails are a bit more refined and the bat tail increases water flow off the tail. A big deep nose concave provides plenty of lift. We strongly suggest a glassed on fin with this model. • Recommended size range: 9’0” to 10’0” • Recommended wave range: Tiny to head-high.

Moontail:This log looks like no other. Its half moon tail shape with high kick and extreme tail concave helps stabilize the board and control water flow while nose riding. If tip time is what you are after, this is the board. • Wider outline enhances the stability while you ride the nose.• The Moontail adds some looseness for tighter turning.• Deep nose concave and wide tip gives great lift for your tip time. • Designed by Wayne Rich.• Recommended size range: 9’0” to 10’0”• Recommended wave range: Tiny to head high.

MC Fish:The MC Fish is a key design in our Special Projects Division. Shaped and designed by Jeff McCallum. Its wider outline and flat rocker helps it excel in small surf. Displacement nose entry allows for top to bottom glide down the line. The glassed on keel fins help generate a ton of speed and drive. • Recommended size range: 5’0” to 6’0”• Recommended wave range: Waist high to overhead.

Hawaiian south shore caught up with On A Mission’s Hawaii sales rep, Joey Vieira, for a little Q & A: HSS: So JV, how long have you been On A Mission?JV: All of my life, (laughs). Nah, seriously, I don’t know, I think 2012 will be eight years. HSS: Wow, long time ah brah. So what has been going on over that time with the brand?JV: The company went through some ownership restructuring about five years ago and things have just been building steam ever since. New products, new team, and always something new on the horizon. Really stoked to be a part of the program.

HSS: So what is the latest for 2012?JV: Well, regarding team riders, signing Jordy Smith in 2011 was a really huge deal. And the rest of the team is amazing also. HSS: What about local boys?JV: Locally we have Joel Centeio, Torrey Meister, Ross Williams, Kaimana Jaquias, as well as a bunch of aspiring ams: Elijah Young, Chris B, Jesse G, Lahiki, Casey B, Keala, just a bunch of really talented rising stars. HSS: What about you? No contract?JV: Ha! I wish. Or maybe not, cause then that would mean I would be obligated to surf mental waves and try to boost mental aerials, no thanks! Haha. I am lucky to get my stuff at a discount! (laughs) Nah, kidding, it’s all good. And let’s see, for new product, man, so much cool stuff, new bags, leashes, pads, prints and designs,

always something new. Just keeping it fun you know. We have the basic black leashes and bags for the guys that want to be stealth like me, but also lots of fun stuff too. I am actually rockin a purple Mitch Coleborn leash I stole from my groms board. I think it is making me surf more like Mitch too. Or maybe I am just hoping it will. haha. Mitch is insane, love the way that guy surfs, mental. HSS: And you guys are big on the stand up side too? JV: We sponsor Danny Ching, who is pretty much the one to beat at every event. We back that up with local boy Slater Trout. Longboard too we have 2011 World Champ Taylor Jensen and we have a solid crew of local bodyboarders rocking OAM gear too. Check www.oamsurf.com to see the entire team. HSS: Sounds like a lot of things going on for OAM?JV: Definitely, OAM is always cooking up something. And we are firing up this contest at your shop April right? HSS: Yes! If you are ON A MISSION for some FREE Stuff, come down! Any OAM purchase of $25 or more qualifies you to spin the lottery wheel and win a prize, could be some ding repair, an OAM T-shirt or ball cap, you won’t know until you go. *Q & A With On A Mission’s Hawaii sales rep, Joey Vieira.

This board was developed in the 80’s for team riders only. It was and still is one of the favorite boards during contests for Takayama’s team riders.

It’s called “In The Pink” because the original color weas a neon pink nose with a black band and yellow body.

The reason the nose was pink is so the judges in the stands can see from far away when the rider was on the nose, hence “In The Pink.”

Just up until about five years ago only team riders were able to get the board. Now it’s available to the regular surfers. It’s by far the #1 Selling Model in the world. Many have tried to copy but none ride like the “In The Pink.”

Good for someone that is looking to catch lots of waves, have an easy time turning and wants to surf knee high to a little over head waves.

Suited for any level of surfing ability from beginners to advanced surfers.

In The Pink Model - The #1 Selling nose rider, catches waves with ease and nose rides unreal.

Fins: 2+1 FCS (Center fin box with fcs side fins). Fins are included.

#1 Selling Board: “In The Pink”
