Appropriation Allowed.

It is reported that many years ago, Nasser-el-din Shah of Qajar, from

one of his overseas travels, brought a souvenir called the camera.

The import of this exciting souvenir from abroad was valuable due to

its synchronicity with its invention; which was a magnificent beginning

to the history of the Iranian photography simultaneous with that of the

western world.

As with any beginning, it was the start of the journey that attracted us.

Apart from a few of the old Iranian photographers such as Antoine-Khan

and Abdollah Mirza Qajar, it can be said that the contemporary Iranian

photography has become propounded not due to its power, but through

its “Iranian-ness,” and that the history of Iranian photography is devoid

of archives and currents comparable to that of the contemporary World

Photography.

In the past few decades, a new form of photography has emerged known

as “Appropriation Photography” in which methods such as Reproduction,

Re-photography, etc. have been developed, and photographers like Jeff

Wall, Yasumasa Morimura, Richard Prince and some others have created

innovative works in that field.

The word “Appropriation” in this style of photography refers to acquiring

and taking exclusive possession, and then through the artistic intervention,

adapting the concept, structure, form and content of an art work to one’s

own. Through this type of adaptation, the delicate distance between

imitation and inspiration can be discerned.

In fact, “Appropriation Photography” is the re-birth of an art-work. What

is ultimately created is inevitably an art that (directly or allegorically)

refers one to another art; be it literature, painting, self-portrait, or others.

The present collection belongs to some young photographers who

consciously, and without anguish, have borrowed and extracted from

the works of others; appropriations which in turn can be counted as

independent works, and are at the same time, due to their attachment

to the works of posterity, portrayals of their imaginations. Ultimately

what seems attractive, is the attention of the new generation of Iranian

photographers to a recent and contemporary subject of “Appropriation

Photography,” and that how in the footsteps of the great artists, if they

have not portrayed more attractive works, they are nonetheless no less

than the originals.

آن گونه که نقل است، سال ها پیش ناصرالدین شاه قاجار از فرنگ سوغاتی برای خود

آورد که دوربین عکاسی نام داشت. این سوغات هیجان انگیز از این جهت ازرش داشت

که ورودش به کشور هم زمان بود با اختراع آن؛ و این سرآغازی پرشکوه بود برای تاریخ

عکاسی ایران که پا به پای جهانیان تاریخ عکاسی جهان را رقم بزنیم.

هر چند که مانند هر شروعی، این آغاز راه بود که برایمان جذابیت داشت. به جز چند

چشمه از عکاسان ایران قدیم همچون آنتوان خان و عبداهلل ميرزا قاجار، می توان گفت

که عکاسی ایران امروزه نه به واسطه قدرتش که به خاطر ایرانی بودنش مطرح است و

تاریخ عکاسی ایران، تهی از صفحات و جریانات معاصری ست که بتوان آنرا هم ارز عکاسی

جهان دانست.

در چند دهه ی اخیر، گونه یی از هنر عکاسی موسوم به عکاسی اقتباسی

)Appropriation Photography) توسعه یافته که رویکردهای متنوعی نظیر بازتولید

(Reproduction)، عکاسی مجدد (Rephotography) و... به آن پرداخته اند و

عکاسانی همچون جف وال، سیندی شرمن، یاسوماسا موریمورا، ریچارد پرینس و... در

این حوزه به خلق آثاری بدیع پرداخته اند.

Appropriation در لغت به معنای از آنِ خودسازی است. یعنی از آنِ خودساخنت

مفهوم، ساختار، شکل و مضمون یک اثر هنری از طریق مداخله یی هنرمندانه در آن. به

واسطه ی این نوع عکاسی می توان فاصله ی ظریف میان تقلید و الهام را از هم متییز کند.

در حقیقت، عکاسی اقتباسی تولد دوباره ی یک اثر هنری است. آنچه که در نهایت ایجاد

می شود، اثری ست که ناگریز، ما را به اثری دیگر )به صورت مستقیم یا استعاری( ارجاع

می دهد؛ اثر دیگری که می تواند در حوزه ادبیات، نقاشی و یا خودِ عکاسی و... باشد.

مجموعه یی که پیش روی شما قرار گرفته، آثار عکاسان جوانی ست که بدون عذاب

وجدان و با آگاهی، به اقتباس از آثار هنری دیگران پرداختند؛ اقتباس هایی که به نوبه ی

خود، آثاری مستقل محسوب می شوند و در عین حال، با دل بستگی به آثار گذشتگان،

تصورات ذهنی شان را به تصویر می کشند. در نهایت، آنچه که جذاب می مناید، پرداخنت

نسل جدید عکاسان ایرانی به موضوعی معاصر و متاخری همچون عکاسی اقتباسی

است؛ اینکه چگونه در جایگاه هنرمندان بزرگ، آثاری را به منایش گذاشتند که اگر

جذاب تر از آثار اولیه نباشند، کمتر نیست.
