With one simple application through UAC, you can choose from the universities and private colleges listed on the next page, most of which are in NSW and the ACT. Even though they may be far away from where you’re living now, we’ve included the 2020 dates for each institution’s open days – if you can manage it, they’re a great opportunity to get a feel for the campus and meet students and staff.

WHICH UNI, WHICH COURSE?When you’ve decided that studying away from home is for you, the next questions are: which institution and which course?

There are many different institutions of varying size and location to choose from and there are more than 2,000 undergraduate courses available through UAC.

Universities offer longstanding, well-rounded academic opportunities. Private colleges often offer specialist courses that are flexible and can adapt quickly to changes in industry.

Courses at most private colleges are full fee-paying – this means your course costs are not subsidised by the Australian Government. However, you may be eligible for FEE-HELP, a government loan scheme that helps students repay their tuition fees once their income meets a certain amount.

Here are some tips to help you choose a university and course that’s right for you:

− Consider fields of study that complement your personal interests, the subjects you enjoyed at school and the career you have in mind. UAC’s online Course Compass can help – it shows you the fields of study offered to previous UAC applicants with similar interests to you: go to uac.edu.au/course-compass.

− Research job growth areas and skills shortages in different fields and look at job vacancy and career websites (eg jobsearch.gov.au).

− Meet with prospective employers and recruiters at expos and information sessions and consider volunteering to gain work experience in your chosen field.

− Find out what university scholarships are available to help you cover your living and study expenses.

− Organise appropriate accommodation well in advance (eg on-campus, rented or shared).

Check the description for each course you’re considering as some may have prerequisites that you’ll have to meet to get an offer. If you don’t meet a required prerequisite, you may need to explore more course options.

And have a back-up plan! If you’re not selected for your favourite course, what’s your second choice?

WHAT DOES IT COST?While your course costs and accommodation will be your biggest expenses, there are also other factors to consider.

Course costsYour course costs will depend on the institution you attend and the type of course you enrol in.

There are two main types of courses for domestic students:

− Commonwealth-supported (CSP) − domestic fee-paying (DFEE).

Most university courses offered to Year 12 students are CSP. This means the Australian Government pays some of the course cost and you pay a student contribution. Each institution sets its own student contribution level for each unit of study. The range varies depending on the area of study.

DFEE courses are generally run by independent or private colleges, institutes or training organisations, which all set their own tuition fees. DFEE courses typically cost you more than CSP courses – you pay the full cost of your course. Your tuition fees are not subsidised by the Australian Government.

The course fee type is identified in each course description on UAC’s website.

AccommodationThere are many different types of on-campus accommodation, from fully catered to self-catered. Fees vary and you should research all types of accommodation to see which suits your budget. Contact the institutions you are interested in and ask for a prospectus, which will outline the facilities that are available. Don’t wait until the last weeks to get organised, as on-campus accommodation fills quickly.

Renting independently or in a share house is another option. University housing services can help you to find other students in a similar situation.

Travel costsIf you study full-time, you will be able to use public transport at a cheaper rate. If you intend to drive, you might need to obtain a parking permit from

Page 9: Applying to NSW and ACT Universities - uac.edu.au · APPLYING TO NSW AND ACT UNIVERSITIES 06 | Work Most uni students have a part-time or casual job. Some work in the area of their

| 05STUDYING IN NSW AND THE ACT

your institution. For information on parking permits and fees contact the institution’s student centre.

Living expensesYou need to think about day-to-day living expenses for food, utilities (including your phone) and entertainment.

Textbooks and equipmentIn your first year of study your textbooks can be one of your largest expenses. However, at most universities you will be able to buy at least some second-hand books.

Some courses may require you to buy specialist equipment. Check with the relevant faculty of the institution you’re interested in to see if this is the case.

Computer and internet accessYou will need a computer with internet access to make the best use of your uni’s online study facilities.

HOW WILL I PAY?Although going to uni can be expensive, financial support is available.

HELP loansIf you enrol in a CSP course, you can choose to pay all or part of your student contribution up-front, or defer payment by taking a HECS-HELP loan, which is repaid later through the tax system when your salary reaches a certain amount.

Similarly, the FEE-HELP loan scheme helps eligible DFEE students pay their tuition fees.

These HELP loans can’t be used to pay for other costs like accommodation or textbooks.

If you plan to pay your student contributions or tuition fees through the HELP scheme you must have a tax file number (TFN) when you enrol at university. Visit the Australian Taxation Office website at ato.gov.au for information on applying for a TFN.

For information about HELP loans, visit studyassist.gov.au.

WorkMost uni students have a part-time or casual job. Some work in the area of their study to gain experience before graduating. Check the university employment websites for casual positions.

Government assistanceCentrelink provides financial assistance for students studying full-time and part-time through income-tested schemes such as Youth Allowance, Austudy and ABSTUDY.

Institution Equity ScholarshipsInstitution Equity Scholarships help financially disadvantaged students with the costs associated with higher education.

If your family is receiving a Centrelink or other Australian Government means-tested income support payment, you are considered to be financially disadvantaged.

You may also be considered for an Equity Scholarship if you meet one or more of the following criteria:

− have carer responsibilities − have English language difficulty − have financial hardship − have a long-term medical condition/disability

or ongoing effects of abuse − reside in a regional or remote area − have sole parent responsibilities.

If you are Indigenous or have refugee status, these attributes will also be considered.

Be aware that meeting the scholarship eligibility criteria doesn’t guarantee that you will be awarded a scholarship. There are a limited number of Equity Scholarships and there are more applicants than scholarships. Individual institutions make offers as a result of a competitive process. If you’re unsuccessful it doesn’t mean that you’re not in need; rather, it means that there are other applicants who’ve been assessed as being in greater need.

Equity Scholarships applications open on UAC’s website in early April. This is a separate application to applying for university.

By submitting just one Equity Scholarships application through UAC you will be considered for all Equity Scholarships for which you are eligible.

Institution merit-based scholarshipsMerit-based scholarships are awarded to applicants on a range of criteria such as:

− school examination results − academic excellence − Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) − course/faculty of study − personal achievements such as:

• leadership• creativity• self-motivation• communication skills• an outstanding ability in sport.

You need to apply directly to individual institutions for merit-based scholarships.

Scholarships range from one‑off book bursaries of $500 to $25,000 per year for tuition and accommodation.

APPLYING THROUGH UAC

Every year, more than 50,000 Year 12 students apply for uni through UAC. With just one application you can apply to five institutions at any one time, then keep track of your application and manage your offers all in the same place.

Page 13: Applying to NSW and ACT Universities - uac.edu.au · APPLYING TO NSW AND ACT UNIVERSITIES 06 | Work Most uni students have a part-time or casual job. Some work in the area of their

| 09APPLYING THROUGH UAC

You can apply for undergraduate study through UAC if you’re:

− an Australian citizen − a New Zealand citizen − a permanent resident of Australia − the holder of an Australian permanent resident

humanitarian visa.

If you know the courses you’re applying for, the online application will only take you about 20 minutes.

Applications for undergraduate study in 2020–21 open in early April.

Here’s a checklist of what you need to have ready to apply:

− your Year 12 student number (you’ll also be asked to enter a PIN, which is your date of birth – you can change it after you’ve applied)

− your UCAT candidate number, if relevant − your chosen courses (up to five) and their

course codes, which can be found on the course search on UAC’s website and in the dropdown menu in the application itself

− a credit card (Mastercard or Visa) to pay the processing fee. You can also pay by BPay.

We recommend you apply before the early-bird closing date (the last business day in September). If you apply after this date you will pay a higher processing charge. Once you’ve applied you can change your course preferences as many times as you like at no charge.

Some courses have early application closing dates or additional selection criteria, such as an interview or portfolio. Check these details in the course search on UAC’s website before you apply.

After you apply, it’s free to change your course preferences. In 2019, one applicant changed their preferences 68 times!

Applying directly to the uniSome of our participating institutions also take direct applications, which you can have in addition to your UAC application. If you complete both a UAC application and a direct application, make sure you don’t duplicate your course preferences. If you do, you will be automatically assessed as ‘not eligible’ for an offer to that course in your UAC application. This ensures you don’t receive two offers to the same course. So make the most of both applications and choose different preferences in each.

If you receive an offer through your direct application, you can still receive an offer through your UAC application. Check with the uni as to how and when it will make its direct offers.

ASSESSMENT AND SELECTIONYour entry into most courses will be assessed on the basis of your academic qualifications and results (eg your ATAR). However, each institution sets its own admission criteria and most offer pathways to applicants who don’t meet these general criteria. Be sure to check the website of each institution for details.

ATARsUniversities have found ATARs to be a valid predictor of success in tertiary study. ATARs are calculated in each state to reflect a student’s rank against other students in their state. An ATAR of 85.00 in your state will, however, be considered equivalent to an ATAR of 85.00 in other states.

Selection ranksYour selection rank determines whether you are eligible for selection to any of your course preferences. As a Year 12 student, your selection rank is usually your ATAR. However, if other factors are taken into consideration (eg your achievement in a Year 12 course related to your preferred degree or as a result of equity considerations), these will be combined with your ATAR to adjust your selection rank and make it higher than your ATAR.

The course listing starting on page 23 shows the lowest selection rank required to receive an offer to each 2020 semester 1 course in the main Year 12 offer rounds (December Round 2 and January Round 1).

The interaction of three factors determines the lowest selection rank:

− the number of places available in the course − the number of applicants for the course − the quality of those applicants.

These three factors mean that the lowest selection ranks can change from year to year and are not known before applicants are selected for a particular course in a particular year.

The lowest selection rank does not represent the average ability of the students accepted for the course and does not reflect the difficulty or quality of the course.

Selection rank adjustmentsMany applicants receive an offer to a course even though they have an ATAR below the published lowest selection rank. Often this is because other factors have been taken into consideration in combination with their ATAR and their selection rank for that course has been adjusted and is higher than their ATAR.

These adjustments are due to factors such as performance in Year 12 courses, living or attending school in a certain area, and equity considerations.

Selection rank adjustments are applied differently from institution to institution and from course to course within the same institution. Visit each institution’s website for details.

You need to know that: − adjustments do not change your ATAR, they

change your selection rank for a particular preference

− the lowest course selection ranks published in this booklet incorporate these adjustments

− your selection rank = your ATAR + adjustments − institutions automatically adjust your selection

rank if you are eligible − you will not be notified of your selection rank.

As selection rank adjustments are course specific, your selection rank can be different for each of your course preferences.

For example: Course A has six applicants and only three places available. The six applicants have the following selection ranks:

Applicant Selection rank1 89.00 (ATAR of 89.00)

2 88.00 (ATAR of 87.00 plus adjustment of 1 point)

3 87.00 (ATAR of 83.00 plus adjustment of 4 points)

4 86.00 (ATAR of 86.00)

5 85.00 (ATAR of 83.00 plus adjustment of 2 points)

6 84.00 (ATAR of 84.00)

Page 15: Applying to NSW and ACT Universities - uac.edu.au · APPLYING TO NSW AND ACT UNIVERSITIES 06 | Work Most uni students have a part-time or casual job. Some work in the area of their

| 11APPLYING THROUGH UAC

Offers will be made to applicants 1, 2 and 3. Applicant 4 won’t receive an offer, even with an ATAR higher than applicant 3. Applicant 3 will receive an offer even though their ATAR is below the lowest selection rank because their selection rank for this course has been adjusted by 4 points. The lowest selection rank required to receive an offer to Course A will be 87.00.

Additional selection criteriaSome courses select applicants on the basis of additional selection criteria such as a personal statement, questionnaire, portfolio of work, audition, interview or test. Other courses may use a combination of both academic qualifications and additional selection criteria. Additional selection criteria can be found in the course descriptions available through the course search on the UAC website.

ENTRY SCHEMESMany institutions also take into account other factors, such as recommendations from your school or long-term educational disadvantage. After you’ve applied through UAC for undergraduate admission, you can also apply for Schools Recommendation Schemes and Educational Access Schemes.

Schools Recommendation SchemesSchools Recommendation Schemes (SRS) are one way institutions make early offers to current Australian Year 12 students who have applied for undergraduate admission through UAC.

SRS are used by institutions to make offers of undergraduate admission using criteria other than (or in addition to) ATARs. These criteria may

include school recommendations and Year 11 results. Each institution has its own policies on how its individual SRS scheme will work.

Not all courses at individual institutions will be available through SRS.

In 2019, 16,897 Year 12 students applied for SRS and unis made over 19,000 offers.

How to applyApplications for SRS open in early April and close at the end of September. After you’ve applied to UAC for undergraduate admission, you can apply for SRS using your UAC application number and PIN. There is no separate charge to apply for SRS. In your application, you’ll need to provide information about your Year 11 studies.

How you are assessed After you apply, your school will provide their assessment of your abilities and aptitude. Participating institutions then take a variety of information into account when considering your application, including your senior secondary studies and your school’s assessment.

In most cases, institutions make offers to successful applicants before January.

Find out more about SRS on the UAC website.

Educational Access SchemesIf you’ve experienced long-term educational disadvantage because of circumstances beyond your control, you can apply for Educational Access Schemes (EAS). The disadvantage must have seriously affected your educational performance for a period of at least six months.

Disadvantages could include: − attending three or more different secondary

schools in Australia − moving interstate − the death of an immediate family member or

close friend − a severe life-threatening illness − the divorce or separation of parents − work requirements to support your family − excessive responsibility for care of children or

family members − a severe and long-term medical or psychiatric

condition or disability.

Elite athletes and performers cannot apply for EAS on the basis of missing periods of schooling due to sporting or performance commitments. However, some institutions have separate entry schemes that will take these commitments into consideration – you’ll need to check with individual institutions.

International students are not eligible to apply for EAS.

How to applyYour EAS application is a separate application to applying for university.

You can apply for all the disadvantages that are applicable to your situation. You’ll need to submit separate supporting documents for each disadvantage.

UAC will assess your application and, in mid-December, inform you of your eligibility for all institutions regardless of your course preferences. This will help you make decisions about your final preferences in time for the first offer round after ATARs are released.

Page 17: Applying to NSW and ACT Universities - uac.edu.au · APPLYING TO NSW AND ACT UNIVERSITIES 06 | Work Most uni students have a part-time or casual job. Some work in the area of their

| 13APPLYING THROUGH UAC

How you are assessedEAS applications are assessed centrally at UAC but individual institutions have their own policies on how EAS assessments are used to allocate offers.

Institutions use EAS assessments in two ways: − they set aside a number of places − they increase your selection rank.

You won’t be notified of any adjustments to your selection rank made by the institution.

Note that you may be eligible for EAS at an institution and not be offered a place. This is because you still have to compete against other applicants for an offer to your preferred course.

OFFERSOffers are made in a number of offer rounds throughout the year, but most offers to Year 12 students are made in December and January.

Receiving an offerIf you’ve been made an offer to study, you’ll receive an email from UAC notifying you of the details. You can also go to UAC’s website on the offer round date and log in using your UAC application number and UAC PIN.

The institutions, not UAC, decide who receives offers. So if you have questions, you’ll need to speak to the admissions office at the institution. You could ask why you didn’t receive an offer and what other study options are available to you.

Accepting your offerIf you receive an offer in one round, don’t assume that you’ll receive another offer in a later round.

Accept any offer you receive by following the instructions the institution has given you. You must accept your offer by the date indicated in your offer material, otherwise your offer will lapse and it may go to another applicant in the next round.

Accepting an offer doesn’t stop you from being considered for offers in later offer rounds, but you must remove the successful course from your preferences list or it may block further offers.

If you receive an offer in one round and accept it, then receive an offer in a later round, you can choose either to:

− keep your previous offer and not accept your new offer

− accept your new offer and withdraw from the course you’ve already accepted.

Once you accept your offer, the next step is enrolment.

Remember that after you enrol you have until the census date at the end of March to pay your fees, sign up for a HELP loan, or withdraw without penalty from the course.

Receiving further offersIf you’ve received an offer to your first preference, you won’t be considered for further offers in subsequent rounds unless you change your preferences. If you’d like to be considered for other courses, you need to change your preferences by removing that course from your list or moving it to a lower preference.

If you’ve received an offer to a lower preference, you will be automatically considered for higher preferences in the next round. If you’d like to be considered for other courses, you need to change your preferences by removing the course you’re no longer interested in from your list.

Log in to UAC’s website and move your new most preferred course to the top of your list, or add your new course and shuffle the others so that your least preferred course is removed or at least at the bottom of the list.

Do this by the closing date for change of preferences for the next round. These dates are available on UAC’s website.

If you receive another offer and accept it, don’t forget to withdraw from the course you’ve already accepted.

Slipback offersSome institutions may make a slipback offer to a pathway course if you’re not eligible or competitive enough for the course to which you’ve applied.

Page 18: Applying to NSW and ACT Universities - uac.edu.au · APPLYING TO NSW AND ACT UNIVERSITIES 06 | Work Most uni students have a part-time or casual job. Some work in the area of their

APPLYING TO NSW AND ACT UNIVERSITIES

14 |

This means that you may receive an offer to a lower-level course in the same area at the same institution rather than the course you listed in your preferences, even if you didn’t apply for it. For example, you may get an offer to a Diploma in Marketing if you applied for, but weren’t competitive enough for, the Bachelor of Marketing at the same institution.

If you successfully complete a pathway course such as a diploma, an institution may guarantee you entry into some related degree courses. You may also be awarded credit for some studies undertaken in your pathway course.

ENROLMENTEach institution has its own procedures for enrolment: some have online enrolment and payment of fees. When you apply, make sure the name on your application matches your official ID (birth certificate, passport, citizenship documents). You’ll need your ID when you enrol and there may be problems if the name on your ID doesn’t match your offer letter.

Many institutions have orientation days for new students. Orientation programs are designed to help you adjust to campus life. Most include subject selection and course planning, so it’s important to attend.

Bridging coursesYou can enrol in some courses even if you haven’t completed the Year 12 subjects recommended for that course. But you may find it difficult, or be limited in your course subject choices, if you haven’t completed the recommended subjects.

Most institutions offer bridging courses if you need to do some extra study before the course begins. However, bridging courses are not equivalent to the two-year Year 12 course and they may add significantly to your workload at university.

TransferringYou may receive an offer to a course that isn’t your first preference. Many students enrol in a course with a view to transferring into another course after completing a year’s study. A typical example is completing one year of a general degree such as Arts and then transferring to a more specialised degree such as Arts/Law. Transfers such as this are possible but very competitive and you usually need to achieve excellent results in your first year. Remember that each institution has its own requirements for transfers – check with the relevant institution for more information before you enrol.

In most cases you are not in fact transferring but withdrawing from one course and applying for entry to another. You usually need to submit a new application through UAC for the new course. Then, if you get an offer you can formally withdraw from your current course. It’s important to do this so you don’t have additional HECS fees or absent fails.

Page 19: Applying to NSW and ACT Universities - uac.edu.au · APPLYING TO NSW AND ACT UNIVERSITIES 06 | Work Most uni students have a part-time or casual job. Some work in the area of their

| 15APPLYING THROUGH UAC

DeferringAfter you’ve received an offer, you may decide that you’d like some time away from study. Some institutions let you defer your course, usually from six months to one year. Many students use this time to travel, follow a personal interest or work. You are not usually permitted to undertake tertiary study during this period.

Most institutions will ask you to provide a statement to explain why you want to defer and what you’ll be doing during this period. There may also be a fee.

If your deferment application is successful, you’ll receive written confirmation from your institution. Later, you’ll receive instructions on how to take up your deferred offer. Read these instructions carefully.

If you don’t get in...If you don’t get a high enough selection rank for your chosen course there are many options available if you still want to go to uni.

For example, you can change your preferences and try for an offer to a course with a lower selection rank.

Some institutions offer diploma courses which, when complete, will help you gain entry to a degree course as well as give credit towards a degree. You may receive entry to such a course through a slipback offer from the institution. (Read about slipback offers on page 13.)

Most institutions also offer non-award programs or preparation courses which, once completed, can help you gain entry into a bachelor degree.

When you apply through UAC, you’ll be asked if you’d like to receive information about these types of pathway courses. Choose this option to make the most of your application in case you miss out on an offer.

There are also many pathways available between TAFE and uni, and between other tertiary providers and uni. For information about Vocational Education and Training (VET) providers and training courses, visit myskills.gov.au.

Entry schemes and programsSome institutions have entry schemes or programs through which they consider applicants who don’t meet the usual minimum admission criteria of the institution. In addition, most institutions have an admission scheme specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Contact the institution for information about these schemes and programs.
