A complete application for a freshman or transfer student MUST include: Completed online or paper application.

Official transcript(s). Transcripts are official only if sealed in an envelope by your counselor or registrar. An official high school transcript must be submitted if you are under age 22 or if otherwise required. Transfer students: Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, even if credit was not established, must be submitted directly from those institutions. Students whose names have changed should ensure their current name is included on all transcripts.

Official test scores for freshman applicants from the SAT Reasoning Test and/or the ACT. To submit your scores electronically, write code 4832 (SAT) or code 0096 (ACT) on the test reservation form. Scores posted on your high school transcript are also acceptable. Applicants may be admitted without test scores, but scores need to be on file to be considered for scholarships or admission to The Honors College and for placement into foundation course work at New Student Orientation.

Application processing fee of $50 (Arizona resident) or $65 (non-Arizona resident) or an eligible fee waiver. This fee is nonrefundable and nontransferable.

If you are home-schooled, provide a transcript or portfolio of course work and SAT Reasoning Test or ACT scores.

If you have earned a GED certificate, provide official GED test results.

Apply for admission and financial aid as early as possible during your senior year of high school. Applications submitted or completed after the applicable deadline may not be considered. Apply for housing, orientation, and summer programs immediately after admission. Your future housing assignment will be based on your housing application date and other factors, not on your UA admission date.

Student-led tours are generally

offered twice a day on weekdays and once on Saturdays. Class Cats requires a four week notice in order to pair you with a student host. UA Up Close programs are held on designated days throughout the year. Reservations are required and can be made at admissions.arizona.edu/visit. This application packet is for freshman and transfer applicants to The University of Arizona who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. If you are applying for readmission to UA, or as a non-degree-seeking student, or as an international student, this is not the correct application for you. Identify the undergraduate major you wish to pursue at The University of Arizona and indicate your intended college and major in question 20 on page 8 of your application. Be sure to review the entire page to determine the major that most appropriately matches your interest(s). 1 Art – Admission to the School of Art is competitive. Additional materials beyond the UA application are required. Admission to the BA and BFA in Studio Art is competitive and requires submission of a portfolio containing at least eight original artworks.

2 Dance – Admission to the School of Dance is highly competitive and requires an audition, in person or by video. Deadline for auditions is January 2010.

3 Media Arts – Admission to the BA program in Media Arts is competitive. Additional materials beyond the UA application are required. Admission to the BFA will not occur before the sophomore year.

4 Music – Admission to the School of Music is competitive. Additional materials beyond the UA application are required. Admission to all BM programs and the BA in Instrumental or Vocal Studies is competitive and requires an audition. All prospective music students must pass a music theory readiness examination.

5 Theatre Arts – Admission to the School of Theatre Arts is competitive. Additional materials beyond the UA application are required. Admission to the BFA in acting or musical theatre is highly competitive and requires an audition in February 2010.

Freshman Admission Guidelines

Transfer Admission RequirementsArizona residents and non-Arizona residents under age 22 may be admitted with both of the following:

• Cumulative recalculated GPA of 2.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in a minimum of 24 transferable semester credits completed

• No more than one course work deficiency in two subject competency areas satisfied with high school and/or college work (see table on page 6) and not in both math and lab science

Arizona residents and non-Arizona residents aged 22 or older may be admitted with the following:

• Cumulative recalculated GPA of 2.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in a minimum of 24 transferable semester credits completed

Arizona residents will be admitted with one of the following:

• Successful completion of the Arizona General Education Curriculum, AGEC, and a minimum cumulative GPA established by the Arizona Board of Regents

• An associate or higher degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education and a minimum GPA of 2.0 (on a 4.0 scale)

Non-Arizona residents: Admission is competitive.

Transferring credits: After a student is admitted, the Registrar's Office or the Office of Admissions will evaluate the transferability of credits from other institutions.

Students must earn a C or better in a transferable college-level course for it to be accepted.

To learn more about how you can satisfy any course work deficiencies with transferable college courses, refer to question 14 and the table on page 6 of this application, paying particular attention to the right-hand column of the table.

Our Promise – A Comprehensive Review

The admissions team at The University of Arizona realizes that personal excellence can and should be evaluated by more than just academic achievement. Through our Comprehensive Review process, we are expanding access to students who will bring unique life experiences and personal achievements to our campus community.

Admission and scholarship award decisions are driven by comprehensive review. Every application may be reviewed by up to two different reviewers before a final decision is made. This process allows us to consider more than a student’s academic profile. Factors such as class rank, strength of curriculum, performance in curriculum, grade point average in required core academic courses, and ACT and/or SAT test scores will be considered. Other factors may include leadership, service, work experience and extracurricular activities; personal characteristics, attributes, and talents; and the ability to benefit from and contribute to a diverse and challenging learning environment. We are interested in learning much more about the student’s preparedness, motivation, and potential in the unique context of their experience. The inclusion of a short answer, personal narrative section to the UA application gives prospective students the opportunity to include unique life experiences and personal achievements in their application file. Through this process, we are making more comprehensive and individualized admission and scholarship decisions.

In recognition of the high level of academic aptitude and course work competency demonstrated by many Arizona students who seek admission to UA, we also offer Assured Admission. Students may earn admission to UA through the Assured Admission process if they are an Arizona resident, attend a regionally accredited high school, rank in the top 25 percent of their graduating class, and have no course work deficiencies as prescribed by the Arizona Board of Regents (see table on page 6).

Arizona applicants who do not meet the Assured Admission criteria and all applicants not considered Arizona residents will be considered for admission through comprehensive review.

Students who take the GED must earn an average score of 500 for admission consideration.

Home-schooled students will be considered on the basis of portfolio/course work and comprehensive review and SAT Reasoning Test or ACT scores.

Notes

Some programs or colleges may require additional application information and/or admission requirements. If students apply to those programs and do not meet the additional qualifications, they will be offered admission in another program for which they qualify. For a complete program listing, please visit www.arizona.edu/degrees/undergrad-degrees.php. Estimating the likelihood of admission is very difficult without considering the complete application file. Thus, it is crucial for applicants to carefully complete the process by providing timely, comprehensive and accurate information.

Need-based Aid: File your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to receive consideration for need based grants, scholarships, work study and to receive

discounted, low interest loans. In order to be considered for the widest possible array of need based aid, submit

your FAFSA by the appropriate UA priority date. The FAFSA is available at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

A separate application is required for Strategic Alternative Learning Techniques (SALT), the UA’s enhanced learning support program. 1. Will I be considered for admission? Yes. We review every complete application, provided all required documents/materials are submitted by the appropriate deadline. Please visit admissions.arizona.edu/applyor call 520.621.3237 for more details.

2. What are the different ways I can apply? As an undergraduate degree-seeking

applicant, there are two ways you can apply for admission. The preferred method for you to apply is

online using the Ways to Apply page admissions.arizona.edu/apply. (The main advantages of applying online include immediate submission, electronic acknowledgement, and the potential for faster processing.) You may also choose to download the application, print out the appropriate PDF version, complete and submit that form of application.

3. Why do you ask for my Social Security number? We use your Social Security number to confirm and match documents associated with your application. You also must provide your Social Security number in order to be considered for financial aid grants, loans and/or on-campus employment.

4. I am a freshman applicant. What are the main factors you will consider in the comprehensive review of my application file? We consider the academic and non-academic elements of your application. In the area of academic profile, we look at the strength of your curriculum, your performance in the curriculum, and your academic aptitude or achievement as demonstrated by scores on standardized tests. In the non-academic aspects of your application, we look at your activities summary and your unique life experiences, attributes, achievements and talents, as well as your personal statement.

5. Do I need to have a certain test score in order to be considered for admission? No, there is no minimum required test score. If you do not provide test scores, you may be asked to submit test scores to the review committee for a more comprehensive and complete review of your application for admission. Test scores are important factors in comprehensive scholarship review. Also, some colleges or majors may require test scores in order to consider applicants for admission to their specific program of study. Essay portions of the ACT and SAT are not required for admission consideration.

6. If my high school does not rank, can I still be considered for admission? Absolutely. We consider much more than the traditional measures of past and projected performance and promise. The absence of class rank will not be a disadvantage to a prepared and motivated student.

7. How many college units do I need to have completed in order to be considered as a transfer applicant? In order to be considered for admission as a transfer applicant, you must have completed a minimum of 24 transferable semester credits/units by the time you apply and have graduated from high school or earned a high school diploma.

8. I am a freshman applicant. Why do you ask me for a personal statement? First and foremost, we would like to offer you a distinctive voice in your application. This gives you an opportunity to share more about yourself than just your academic profile. We use the statement to learn more about you as an individual – your unique talents, experiences, achievements, views, background, interests, goals, preparation and motivation.

9. What are the average academic profiles of last year's entering freshman and transfer classes? The freshmen entering the UA in the fall of 2008 had an average unweighted GPA of 3.36, an average combined SAT critical reading and math score of 1096, and an average ACT composite of 23.6. The average unweighted GPA for new transfers from two- and four-year institutions is 3.08.

10. What if I have a question about which application processing fee I should pay, the Arizona resident or non-Arizona resident amount? If you are not certain about which application processing fee to pay, the $50 or the $65, we encourage you to call the UA Residency Classification Office at 520.621.3636. You may also visit their Web site at www.registrar.arizona.edu/residency/residenc.htm. (Remember, if you will be submitting an eligible application processing fee waiver, you will not need to determine which fee we will waive.)

• Apply early. We start reviewing an application as soon as we receive all required materials. The earlier you submit your complete application, the earlier you will receive a decision. Applications cannot be reviewed until they are complete.

Once we have your complete application, including all required additional materials, it usually takes 4-6 weeks for application processing and review to be completed and for your notification to be sent. See the checklist on the inside cover of this booklet for a description of a complete application.

12. What do I do after I am admitted? After earning admission to The University of Arizona you will be asked to pay your enrollment deposit, confirming your intention to become a new Wildcat. Your admissions package will include the next steps. This publication will help you navigate your next steps including housing options, financial aid, and registering for New Student Orientation.

14. How do I satisfy the academic course work requirements or competencies, as a freshman or a transfer applicant? All freshman applicants and transfer applicants under age 22 are expected to

satisfactorily complete the Arizona Board of Regents’ course work competencies as identified in the table below. See the

table below for the course work competency requirements and for specific scores and/or courses needed. To make up any course work deficiencies with transferable college courses, see table below, righthand column.* If you have met a subject area in high school, you do not need to satisfy college course work requirements in that

area for admission purposes.

15. When may I apply for UA housing and submit my housing preferences? Applications for housing in UA residence halls are accepted only from students who have been admitted to the University. The most popular housing choices fill up quickly, so apply for housing as soon as possible after you are admitted.
