T h e m e t h o d d e s c r i b e d f o r r e d u c i n g t h e p e r -f o r m a n c e t i m e o f t h e FA t e s t f o r r a b i e s b y u s i n gu n f i x e d b r a i n i m p r e s s i o n s s t a i n e d w i t h r a b i e sc o n j u g a t e a t room t e m p e r a t u r e f o r 1 0 m i ns h o w e d t h e s a m e s e n s i t i v i t y a n d s p e c i f i c i t y a st h e s t a n d a r d FA a n d m o u s e i n o c u l a t i o n t e s t s .I n g e n e r a l , m o r e a n t i g e n w a s s e e n i n t h e u n f i x e dp o s i t i v e i m p r e s s i o n s t h a n i n t h e f i x e d o n e s . A l s oi n o n e c a s e , a p o s i t i v e r e s u l t w a s o b t a i n e d w i t ht h e u n f i x e d s m e a r w h e r e a s t h e c o r r e s p o n d i n gf i x e d o n e w a s n e g a t i v e . T h e s p e c i f i c i t y o f t h a tr e s u l t w a s c o n f i r m e d b y i n o c u l a t i n g t h e b r a i ns a m p l e i n t o s u c k l i n g m i c e , known t o b e mores e n s i t i v e t o r a b i e s v i r u s t h a n a d u l t m i c e ( 1 , 1 5 ) .A l t h o u g h t h e r e a s o n f o r f i n d i n g l e s s a n t i g e n w i t ht h e a c e t o n e - f i x e d i m p r e s s i o n s i s n o t k n o w n , i tc o u l d b e d u e t o d a m a g e t o t h e r a b i e s a n t i g e n b ya c e t o n e .

L o w e r i n t e n s i t yo f s t a i n i n g c o u l d r e s u l t i n e r r o n e o u s d i a g n o s i s o ns l i d e s w i t h m i n i m a l a n t i g e n , b u t w e h a d n o p r o b -l e m i n d i f f e r e n t i a t i n g t h e p o s i t i v e s a m p l e s f r o mt h e n e g a t i v e o n e s . A k i n e t i c s t u d y o f t h e r a b i e sa n t i g e n - a n t i b o d y r e a c t i o n h a s n o t b e e n p e r -f o r m e d , b u t a s i t u a t i o n s i m i l a r t o t h a t f o u n d b yM a y e r a n d H e i d e l b e r g e r ( 1 4 ) f o r p n e u m o c o c c a lp o l y s a c c h a r i d e s m i g h t o c c u r . I n t h e i r s t u d y , 90%o f t h e r e a c t i o n w a s c o m p l e t e d i n 3 s e c , a n d t h er e m a i n d e r " t o o k p l a c e w i t h p r o g r e s s i v e l y d i -m i n i s h i n g v e l o c i t y .
