INSIDE THIS ISSUE:

ROV for NDT

President, Jim J. Hills

ATS is working to increase our capabilities in the Wind Speed Calibration Services.

Another year has passed and our stake in the wind flow calibration field is increasing. As mentioned in prior years, as the renewable energy market increases worldwide, so does the need for reliable and precise measuring equipment. Wind power is quickly gaining structure and provides a cost benefit alternative to other forms of energy. This need also drives the need for reliable and accurate measuring equipment. ATS has always met these demands and will continue to do so as we evolve into this new discipline.

ATS Environmental Calibrations has taken the next step in widening our approach to velocity calibrations by adding a more powerful, high-precision wind tunnel. With the addition of our new custom fabricated wind tunnel, we have widened our capabilities in the testing of various types of portable anemometers, wind speed indicators, & hot wire anemometers traceable to NIST. The process began

ATS Expands Wind Speed Calibration Services with our small model wind tunnel in 2015. Capable of sourcing a uniform flow rate with wind speeds from 2.5 meters / second (492 ft/min) up to 15 meters / second (2953 ft/min). As of January 2017, we have added a new Eiffel-type Calibration Wind Tunnel. This new unit is capable of sourcing wind velocities of up to 35 meters / second with an increased accuracy of 1.2% vs. the traditional 2%.

Calibration of end users assets are verified through written procedures. Each unit is meticulous tested in both increasing & decreasing speed direction to account for any hysteresis effects. Wind Vane anemometers are further inspected for physical defects such as burs, cracks, or chips in the vane blade. After the testing is completed, all data is then recorded and compared to manufacturer specifications or end user requested specifications.

We expect great things from our new equipment and hope to further increase our name as a dynamic calibrations lab.

ATS Employee Named President of Failure Analysis Society

ATS In the Rockies

Seismic Certification (OSHPD)

ATS has extended its commercial services consulting engineering division to the Mountain West Region, with efforts out of Denver, Colorado.

Commercial Services expanded West in January 2016 and has gained many new local clients in its first year in Denver, including a large anchor retrofit at the Inverness Hotel and Conference Center – a hotel where the Denver Broncos players’ and their families often stay during football season. In addition, ATS is involved with Denver Metro BOMA (Building Owners and Managers Association) and Denver BOAC (Building

Operators Association of Colorado) to educate commercial building decision makers on regulations and standards of suspended access and fall protection. Looking forward to the future, ATS Mountain West Region plans to seek relationships with architects to consult in façade access design projects, in addition to the current inspection, testing, and retrofit services in the continually growing Mile High City. Western bound!

The OSHPD (‘Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development’) certification is a process that evaluates the resistance of non-structural components to earthquake events. OSHPD regulates items critical to the operations and safety of healthcare facilities in the State of California.

Items ranging from ‘Exit’ signs to electrical transformers are affected by OSHPD regulations.

By adding the engineering review and project management to the testing that ATS already performs using our in-house triaxial seismic table, ATS now combines all elements of the OSHPD seismic certification process under one roof.

As a true ‘one-stop-shop’, ATS offers an efficient and turnkey solution for seismic certification and compliance.

Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) testing for the automotive industry has been a key focus for ATS. We have experienced such exponential growth in this area that the chemistry department has purchased a dedicated Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometer (GCMS) specifically for automotive testing. We are currently performing various VOC methods for VW, Ford, Volvo, Toyota, GM, and others.

ATS differentiates itself from the competition by providing detailed component failure analysis results along with the VOC pass/fail criteria required by the methods. Helping our customers troubleshoot their failures has put us a step above our competitors. We are excited to be expanding in this area and are continuously adding new methods and capabilities in the automotive industry.

Automotive VOC Testing

In May 2016, James Halsey joined ATS as Quality Assurance Director. Mr. Halsey has more than 20 years’ experience working in Laboratories and most recently worked as QA Director for the environmental division of a large product safety company. James is a Senior Member of the American Society for Quality (ASQ) and holds certifications as an ASQ Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence, ASQ Certified Quality Auditor, and a NQA-1 Lead Auditor. James holds a Science Degree from The College of West Virginia and a Business Degree from Shorter University. James spends most of his time outside of work wrangling two teenagers, boating, and traveling.

NADCAP UpdateATS has been in pursuit of expanding its NADCAP (National Aerospace and Defense Contractors Accreditation Program) accreditation for the following lab areas: Fatigue & Mechanical Testing, Environmental, Metallurgy, Machine Shop, and Chemistry. Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing Trending Upward

New Chemistry Manager

ATS Purchased Makino U6 Wire EDM

ATS has been performing Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) examinations for the better part of 10 years primarily working to customer provided specifications. As an increasing number of our customers gravitate towards this technology, we have invested considerable effort and capital in equipment, training, and procedure development. Currently ATS has equipment and procedures capable of performing PAUT on boiler tubes, headers, power and process piping (ASME BP&V), Structural Steel (AWS D1.1), and Bridge Structures (AWS D1.5). We have hired a Phased Array Level III Examiner based out of the Marietta facility who will help us continue to develop approved procedures and techniques for PAUT and Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) in order to build our capabilities. We are currently seeing benefits from this investment through a variety of ongoing PAUT projects, including one of largest ever in eastern Maryland performing PAUT on carbon and stainless steel pipe welds.

We are pleased to introduce Justin Burmeister as the new Chemistry Manager at ATS.

He will become the Chemistry Manager effective April 2017 when our current manager, Phil Rogers, will be retiring after 40 years with ATS. Justin has over 10 years of experience working in the chemical analysis group at ATS and many of you may already know him by now since his primary responsibilities have been in Business Development, Metals Analysis, and Consumer Product Testing. Justin received his Bachelor of Sciences degree in Biology from Mercer University and has attended several managerial and strategic planning seminars while at ATS. In his spare time Justin enjoys hiking, rock climbing, working on cars, brewing beer, and spending time with his wife, Kathryn. You can reach Justin at: [email protected] or by phone at 678-444-2837.

Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) was recently acquired to meet the growing needs of ATS customers to machine any metallic materials in a more precise manner.

Electrical discharge machining (EDM), sometimes informally or unofficially also referred to as spark machining, spark eroding, burning, wire burning or wire erosion, is a machining process used to cut materials by using electrical discharge cutting. Material is removed from the work piece by a series of rapidly recurring current discharges between two electrodes, separated by a liquid. Many of our clients require testing to be performed with high precision parts, the Wire EDM allows ATS to provide our clients with those cutting tolerances. Also, the EDM can cut intricate contours or shapes in hardened steel without the need for heat treatment. In fact, the hardness of the material is a complete non-issue for the EDM. This machine is capable of cutting material over 4” thick and weighing more than 3500 pounds. Wire EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) machines are one of the best machines to use for accuracy and precision cutting of material for testing.
