IntroductionThis course introduces conflict analysis skills and tools and prepares participants to apply them in conflict-sensitive programming, strategic planning, and design of UN responses in contexts of deteriorating human security, armed conflict, political crisis and other threats to peace. As one of the Staff College’s most established offerings, the course been continually adapted and updated over the years to address emerging challenges and to reflect the evolution of UN policy and practice on conflict analysis, conflict prevention and sustaining peace.

ObjectivesUpon successful completion of this course, participants will:

Apply conflict analysis tools to real cases and fictional scenarios;Benefit from a broad conceptual understanding of conflict prevention and peacebuilding;Use conflict analysis to articulate and prioritize preventive and/or peacebuilding measures;Be exposed to an overview of major UN institutions and mechanisms working on conflict prevention and peacebuilding;

Course ContentsPsychology of analysis and cognitive biases; Advanced conflict analysis tools; Gender and conflict analysis; Conflict-sensitive and peacebuilding programming; Theories of change; The latest institutional and policy developments in the areas of sustaining peace (preventive diplomacy, conflict prevention, peacebuilding, peace operations support) and the implementation of Agenda 2030 (Goal 16)

  Course MethodologyThe face-to-face course employs an adult learning approach, engaging participants in practical exercises, group work, simulations and field exchanges. The training team is composed of professional UN staff and thematic experts who will share their experience and knowledge.

Target AudienceUN personnel working on humanitarian support, peace operations, development programming, political crises and other complex emergencies.

Cost of participationThe programme fee of 2,500 USD covers:

A 4-day face-to-face workshopAll training materials and access to the online UNSSC learning platform

Refreshments will be provided during the programme. The fee does not include travel, accommodation, meals and other incidentals.The UN System Staff College will award Certificates of Attendance to participants who complete the course.
