Did you know that… trigger elements in Movement Automation can be usedto start or stop sequences automatically? Triggers are a special type ofBlending and Movement Automation (BMA) element. They are used to monitorconfigurable conditions and when those conditions are satisfied, the triggercommands the associated task sequence to perform a path state transition(e.g. lineup, throttle flow, full flow, gravity flow, stop flow, closeout).

Use of Triggers in BMA Movement Automation

Triggers are BMA equipment elements; they are an equipment type of theirown because they fulfill the unique function of monitoring configurableconditions, and when these conditions are satisfied, the triggers are able tocommand path state transitions. They represent internal software entities,instead of physical equipment in the field.

more, may be configured on a trigger element. The conditions Task, Operator,Target Volume and Target Flow, that may be assigned to tasks and sequences,do not apply to triggers.

Triggers are associated with task sequences, either manually during ordercreation or through association with other elements in the piping network.In both cases the triggers appear as associated elements on the path as soonas path selection has been completed.

There is no limit to the number and type of possible triggers that can beassociated to a path. Multiple Simultaneous conditions are supported. Apath could for example have a single start full flow trigger and several stopflow triggers.

Trigger monitoring occurs at the same time as the sequence start and stopcondition monitoring. The first condition that is met will be acted upon. Forexample, say that a sequence is configured with a stop condition that willstop flow at a specific date and time, and the same sequence includes atrigger that is configured to stop flow on a high tank level. If the identifiedtank reaches its high level before the stop condition date and time, thesequence is stopped.

In the same manner as in task monitoring, where individual monitoringconditions can be set up as non-persistent (once off) or persistent (repeatedlytriggering on every rising edge of the condition becoming true) triggers canbe persistent or non-persistent.

Non-persistent trigger conditions monitor until a rising edge is followed by afalling edge. The trigger is set to MET at the rising edge and set to NOTMETat the falling edge, as shown in Figure 1 below. A non-persistent trigger canbe restarted by clicking the START button on the Trigger Detail or changezone.

Figure 1 – edge Triggering of Triggers and the effect of ConfiguringPersistence

Triggers can be preconfigured as part of the normal Movement Automationconfiguration procedures.

They can also be fully reconfigured from the Trigger Detail - Conditions tab,if access is provided. Standard Experion Asset based security determineswho can see and access a trigger's configuration.

Advanced Alarm Management - AAM

New Alarm Configuration Manager (ACM) update is available.

Alarm Configuration Manager (ACM) R310.1 Patch 22

Prior to this patch, Alarm Configuration Manager (ACM ) supportedenabling/disabling of alarms only at the tag level. However, as many DCSnow support enabling/disabling at an individual alarm parameter level, ACMis enhanced to support the same. The ability to enable/disable individualalarms in ACM is dependent on the target DCS having that capability.

In addition to individual alarm enable status, the DeltaV DCS contains theIndividual Suppression status parameter for each alarm type which can alsobe managed and enforced by ACM.

This enhancement is supported for the following control systems.

• Experion

• Foxboro

• DeltaV

• TPS(from TPN 681 and above) Documentation updates include:

The following sections have been added/updated in the ACM 310 User Guide:

UniSim Design R410 New Feature - Detailed Heat Loss Model for PipeSegments in Dynamics

This month’s article looks in more detail at the “Cylindrical Wall” Heat Lossmodel in the Pipe Segment unit operation, one of the new features included

The Detailed Heat Loss Model

The heat loss experienced by any piece of plant equipment is considered bythe holdup model in UniSim Design. The heat loss model influences theholdup by contributing an extra term to the energy balance equation.

Heat is lost (or gained) from the holdup fluid through the wall and insulationto the surroundings.

There are several underlying assumptions that are considered during adetailed heat loss calculation:

• There is heat capacity associated with the wall (metal) andinsulation containing the fluid.

• There is thermal conductivity associated with the wall andinsulation containing the fluid and heat conduction through it. Thedetails of this calculation depend on the model in use.

• There are no spatial gradients in the fluids (the fluid is at uniformtemperature, as are the surroundings – a lumped parameteranalysis).

• The calculation uses convective heat transfer on the inside andoutside of the vessel.

A balance can be performed across the wall:

The balance across the insulation is:

where:

A = the heat transfer area

x = the thickness

Cp = the heat capacity

T = the temperature

k = the thermal conductivity

h = the heat transfer coefficient

in the recently released UniSim® Design version R410.

In UniSim® Design R400 and previous versions, the detailed heat loss modelin the Pipe Segment unit operation is supported by a ‘Plane Wall’ modelcalculation engine. The ‘Plane Wall’ model assumes one-dimensional heattransfer through a plane wall. The model can also provide approximatecalculations for a hollow cylinder, when the wall thickness is relatively smallcompared to the inner diameter of the cylinder. When the insulation layerbecomes thicker, the ‘Plane Wall’ model may introduce a noticeable error inthe energy balance calculations. For each insulation layer, lumped parametersare used with linear approximation for the temperature profile. The calculationresults from the ‘Plane Wall’ model might not be accurate enough dependingon the system the user would like to model; particularly with the increase ofthe insulation layer thickness.

In UniSim Design version R410, to improve the prediction of the pipe segmentheat loss behavior, a ‘Cylindrical Wall’ model has been implemented in thecalculation engine to give an alternative for the user to the ‘Plane Wall’ model.The ‘Cylindrical Wall’ model assumes one-dimensional heat transfer throughthe walls of a hollow cylinder. Compared with the ‘Plane Wall’ model, the’Cylindrical Wall’ model takes the changing heat transfer area in the radialdirection of the cylinder into account.

Detailed Heat Loss: the ‘Cylindrical Wall’ Model

The ’Cylindrical Wall’ detailed heat loss model serves the following mainpurposes:

• To augment the current ’Plane Wall’ model with a cylindrical onethat matches the hollow cylindrical geometry of pipe segments.

• To enable the user to control the discretization of the layers ofinsulation, which provides a better estimation than the lumpedlayers used by the ’Plane Wall’ model when conduction resistancethrough the wall is relatively high.

The ’Cylindrical Wall’ detailed heat loss model is only available in Dynamics,for it to be used the "one dp calc/segment" option needs to be selected andthe "Model Holdup Volume" checkbox needs to be activated for the PipeSegment unit operation under the Dynamics tab ... Parameters page

User Interface and Options available for the Detailed Heat Loss Model

The Rating tab provides a way to configure the detailed heat loss model indynamics.

The detailed heat loss model page for the pipe segment appears as follows:

The ‘Cylindrical Wall’ detailed heat loss page consists of three groups:

• Selected segment control • Inner fluid energy balance control• Variable / Parameter Display and Control

Selected Segment Control

In the Pipe Segment unit operation, the user can divide the pipe into a numberof segments and the detailed heat loss calculations can be done for each ofthe segments. With this control users can select for which segment settingsand results are displayed.

Inner Fluid energy Balance Control

This check box provides the user with an option to activate or de-activate the

UniSim Design

As shown, both the insulation and wall can store heat. The heat loss term thatis accounted for in the energy balance around the holdup is:

If Tfluid

is greater than Twall

, the heat is lost to the surroundings. If Tfluid

is lessthan T

wall, the heat is gained from the surroundings.

Note that the Detailed Heat Loss calculations in a vessel consider a differentheat transfer coefficient between the holdup and the wall for the vapour andthe liquid phases and the heat transfer area changes with the level. In thepipe segment, heat loss is calculated for each segment with a total heattransfer area for each segment (there is no phase dependency). At presentthe ‘Cylindrical Wall’ Model is only available in the Pipe Segment (and theGasifier).

The ‘Cylindrical Wall’ Model

To capture the cylindrical geometry effects in the detailed heat loss model,the changes of surface area and the volume of the wall in the radial directionmust be taken into consideration when solving the heat transfer and thetemperature changes in the differential equations mentioned above.

The one-dimensional ’Plane Wall’ model discretizes the pipe into intervalsalong its length and solves heat conduction for each interval by the followingkind of equation:

Where:

A = 2 . Pi . R . L

R = Pipe segment radius

L = Pipe segment length

Clearly the plane wall assumption made here can introduce inaccuracies inthe calculation of a cylindrical pipe. To develop a one-dimensional ’CylindricalWall’ detailed heat loss model, the above equation used for the ’Plane Wall’model is modified into the following format:

Where:

Q = the heat transferred

T1, T2 = the current inner and outer temperature

r1, r2 = the inner and outer radius

When this checkbox isunchecked, the following fluid energy equation in heat loss transfer calculationwill be ignored, instead there is the assumption of a constant temperature ofthe entire holdup fluid in each time step.

Where:

m = Total mole of the holdup fluid in the segment

Cp

= Heat capacity of the holdup fluid in the segment;

(UA)0

= Convective heat transfer coefficient;

For stability, it is recommended to leave this option activated.

Variable / Parameter Display and Control

This control separates all data and settings of the ’Cylindrical Wall’ model intothree pages:

1. T Profile page2. Conduction page3. Convection / Radiation page

The Temperature Profile of wall of each segment can be modified / monitoredon this page. For each layer, temperatures at measurement points are listedfrom top (inner point) to bottom (outer point).

Wall properties are defined on this page. Layers are listed from left (innerlayer) to right (outer layer). T Points is the number of temperaturemeasurement points of each layer. The first layer is the pipe wall. Hence itsthickness and conductivity (Kappa) is defined on the Sizing Page.

Refer to Section 5.2.3 - Rating Tab Sizing Page in the UniSim® DesignOperations Guide for more information.

Inside and outside convection and radiation correlation parameters aredefined on this page, which are used to calculate heat transfer between fluidand wall surface.

The correlation is a simplified equation used to tune “Inside U” and “OutsideU”, taking the effects of temperature and surface fluid velocity into account.Both inside and outside correlations have the following form:

Uconst

= Constant convection coefficient (Inside U and Outside U)

Coeffradi
