briefAn ongoing group project based in the realm of ‘horror’ through machinic/mechanical architecture, using the works of Morphosis as a point of departure. Set one hundred years from now in the Mallaig Harbour region of the Scottish Highlands, we have been tasked with designing relative to the idea of ‘surplus’ and with an emphasis on the element of water. Through a number of explorations and with the aforementioned themes in mind, we arrived at the scenario of large scale Sperm Whale farming and the Ambergris they produce within their intestines. This concept has required us to engage with global and regional scales, such as trade links and migration routes.

Although a startling premise, the central theme within the scenario we have developed is the hyper-normalisation human-kind endures. Therefore, the bloody and shocking nature of this new industry would have become as normal as any traditional farming carried out today. It is in this sense that we have attempted to achieve ‘horror’, not through the scenario itself but through the wider context in which it sits.

Within the project were a number of group, individual and paired works, culminating in the realisation of the entire mallaig coastline. The following pages will touch upon each of these elements and summarise the overall paired proposal I developed with Hailey Oliver.

The year is 2116; the UK Government have developed a network of confidential Marine Research Facilities throughout the North Atlantic. Research Facility 0831 is based 1.2km North from the coast of Mallaig, Scotland. This facility compiles data on [BLANK] through research and experiments on the [BLANK] found in the region. This data is then used in the production and development of [BLANK]. The facility is comprised of three rigs, linked by a mechanical STOBAR Landing Platform. This can be controlled to rise up from beneath the water during times of military conflict, whilst otherwise allowing boats to pass through the site unencumbered. Within the complex feature Military, Research, Residential and Prison sectors, with the Prison primarily containing political traitors to the cause of [BLANK] and military captives.

briefA library situated Rome, I have drawn upon the great cultural and artistic background of the city to inspire my Art Library. The following pages will provide a brief overview of the design process of this single project, from inception to final images. The concept of the library encompasses two main function; a public art gallery and an archive of prominent pieces with more private viewing galleries for appointment-based previews. The Piazza San Cosimato, its location, is a vibrant social hub featuring a fish market, areas in which children play football and a small playground. Therefore, it was my aim to include many social pockets surround the bulilding, as well as providing for the existing uses of the site, such as my relocation of the market.

briefA tattoo parlour/residency adjacent to the Edinburgh canal. The primary issues to tackle related to the compact and narrow site which features two prominent trees that were to be retained within a courtyard. The clients were a young professional couple, looking to balance work/home life within one building. This project was completed using hand drawings alone, such as plans, sections and exploded isometrics.
