Instructions:The information attained from this packet is used to determine the employee’s qualifications for promotion within the Technician Career Ladder. Promotions and pay raises will be dependent on the budget.

1. To be considered for advancement your completed packet and all verifying paperwork must be turned into Mr. McKeever, Assistant Hospital Director, no later than 5:00 PM on December 9, 2005.

2. The Advancement Packet must contain all of the following in order to be considered: All forms completed and signed by the employee and the employee’s

supervisor. Verification of highest level of education obtained (if applicable). Verification of license or certifications obtained (if applicable). Verification of Continuing Education hours obtained. Verification of any Honors or Awards listed (if applicable). Verification of all publications or presentations (if applicable). Copy of the Veterinary Technical Competencies Lists Copy of latest Employee Performance Evaluation. Two Letters of Support Any additional pertinent documentation.

3. An asterisk (*) in the title of any section indicates you must attach supporting documentation of the information provided. For example: The asterisk (*) in Section I. Education indicates copies of degrees you have listed must accompany the packet. If you do not list any degrees but indicate college hours, a copy of your transcripts is required.

The VMC Technician Career Ladder Review Committee, made up of hospital administration and clinical faculty, reviews and scores each completed packet using the scoring process outlined below. Based upon these scores, the committee will make recommendations for career ladder promotions to the Hospital Board. Promotions are based upon these recommendations, the needs of the Hospital and budgetary considerations.

Career Ladder Benchmarks

Technician I Graduation from an accredited American Veterinary Medical Association program for

veterinary technology and/or met requirements for certification in the State of Florida; or a high school degree and two years of veterinary work experience.

A background check is required

Technician II Graduation from an accredited American Veterinary Medical Association program for

veterinary technology and/or met requirements for certification in the State of Florida; or a high school degree and four years of veterinary work experience.

Minimum of two years practical experience in an academic hospital environment or equivalent education and practical experience in private practice.

Documented completion of 20 hours continuing education within the last two years. Cross training may substitute for continuing education.

Successful Completion of The Basic Skills Mastery List. A background check is required

Technician III Graduation from an accredited American Veterinary Medical Association program for

veterinary technology and/or met requirements for certification in the State of Florida; or a high school degree and four years of veterinary work experience.

Minimum of four years practical experience in an academic hospital environment or equivalent of eight years education and practical experience in private practice.

Documented completion of 40 hours continuing education within the last two years. Cross training may substitute for continuing education.

Documented completion of 8 hours of continuing education in human resources or supervising skills within last two years.

Successful Completion of Advanced Skills Mastery List. Publication and/or invited speaking engagements, and/or presentations in veterinary

technical topics. A background check is required

Technician IV Graduation from an accredited American Veterinary Medical Association program for

veterinary technology and/or met requirements for certification in the State of Florida; Minimum of five years practical experience in an academic hospital environment or

equivalent of ten years education and practical experience in private practice. Documented completion of 60 hours continuing education within the last three years.

Cross training may substitute for continuing education. Documented completion of 16 hours of continuing education in human resources or

supervising skills within last two years Demonstrated ability to explain, instruct and train students and staff in various

VETERINARY TECHNICIAN I

SUMMARYGeneral Description: Assist in the treatment of animals admitted to the Veterinary Medical Center, provide assistance to the professional staff, may assist in instructing students in proper clinical technique for supporting primary care; helps to maintain a sanitary and functionally well organized service within the Veterinary Medical Center.

DutiesTypical: Assists in providing clinical support to faculty veterinarians in the delivery and instruction of primary care, diagnostic services, community practical medicine, and zoonotic disease control; under the supervision of a professional staff member or higher ranking veterinary technician may assist in administering medications, maintaining complete and accurate medical records, collecting, preparing, and submitting clinical pathology samples, capturing fees for materials and services; collecting patient medical history, and assisting in patient medical evaluation, fluids administration, and replacement therapy; assisting professional staff to perform critical and intensive nursing care or life sustaining emergency care as needed; providing clinical service support by maintaining a supply inventory and replenishing stock within the assigned service, when directed will perform maintenance service checks and minor repairs to assigned equipment, maintaining a clean/sanitary and functionally organized clinical service area, and assisting, as necessary. SUMMARYGeneral Description: Coordinates the activities and supervises the veterinary technical interviewing and hiring procedures, creates work duty schedules and performance evaluations for assigned staff; provides assistance to the professional staff, instructs veterinary students in clinical techniques, and oversees and maintains the physical area within the Veterinary Medical Center. Provides and supervises the training of techniques, protocols and procedures to new and current staff. Works with other supervisors to identify areas of concern and find solutions to problems.

DutiesTypical: Assumes intermediate supervisory authority for and trains subordinate veterinary technical staff assigned within the clinical service section; performs annual job performance evaluations for assigned staff; designs and organizes work schedules tailored to meet programmed needs within a service area; maintains accountability for inventory control of equipment and supplies within the service area and assumes responsibility for performing regularly scheduled preventative maintenance checks on hospital equipment; works with Nursing Coordinator and other supervisors on personnel matters affecting morale, and job efficiency; oversees and provides clinical support to faculty veterinarians in the delivery and instruction of emergency and critical care, diagnostic services, and zoonotic disease control, including administration of medications, maintenance of complete and accurate medical records, and collection, preparation and submission of clinical pathology samples; performs or assists in patient medical evaluation; may be required to assists in the instruction and induction of general anesthesia preparatory to surgery, fluids administration, and replacement therapy; performs critical and intensive nursing care or life sustaining emergency care as needed; assists, as necessary, in clinical research trials to include comprehensive literature searches and data collection; performs related duties as required.
