2. CRANES

Our crane drive solutions, based on a wide range of standard com-

ponents, can easily be configured for robust service in major crane

types: Harbour container cranes (STS, RMG, RTG), grab portal

cranes and slewing cranes. Industrial EOT bridge cranes such as

grab, hook and ladle cranes or portal cranes. Tower cranes for the

building construction business. Special features include optimised

grab control, electronic flange control for fully synchronised travel for

rail-mounted cranes. Our active front end regenerative units improve

the energy-efficiency for cranes.

3. WATER HANDLING

Whether you are operating in irrigation, sewage treatment, flood con-

trol or a process industry, we can set up a system dimensioned for

your needs, with all necessary safety limits installed. Our AC drives

adapt the pressure/flow to the level required. Our softstarters and

shaft power monitors offer protection from unnecessary downtime,

energy loss and equipment damage. Warning and safety stop levels

are easy to set. Deviations from normal oper ation are quickly detect-

ed over the whole speed range, thanks to our patented pump load

curve protection.

1. MATERIAL HANDLING

Working in mining, mineral processing and cement making means

harsh operating and environmental conditions. Heavy loads, abra-

sive dust and dirt, and extreme weather and temperatures, often in

remote locations. Our Emotron drive solutions can help control doz-

ens or even hundreds of processes in order to optimise their perfor-

mance under varying input conditions and with varying demand by

controlling the speed of the motor driving the process. Our offering

ranges from 0.5 kW to 3 MW at voltages up to 690 V.

Synchronised portal crane with high precisionThis portal crane at Straubing lock near Donau, Germany, was modernised to allow synchronised precision control of two

hoist drives and two trolley drives working in tandem. They handle a stop log gate of 80 tonnes, 27 m wide with only 3

cm allowance on either side. The nominal load is 100 t + 50 t, with a hoisting distance of 21 m. Operations continue with

no jamming of stop logs, while allowing double nominal speed of hoists in single operation with a partial load.

Bridge cranes in the

aluminium industryCG Drives & Automation has built crane drive solutions controlling

70 cranes for NFC Metallurgical Machinery Company in Shenyang,

a major player in the Chinese aluminium industry. These cranes op-

erate in a demanding environment, with extreme temperatures and

hazardous particles. Dropping a load could cause an explosion. Our

Emotron-powered solutions proved to have 30% longer durability, af-

ter NFC evaluated and compared major international brands.

A movable gold mineThe Yanacocha gold mine in Peru presented a real challenge: The 4200m

altitude is extra tough on electrical equipment, because thin air reduces

cooling capacity and electrical isolation. Power comes on cables 30-50

km long, and then there are the standard conditions for mining: huge

temperature variations, humidity, rain, dust and sand. In 2009 CG pro-

vided drives and soft starters for deep well pumps that dry out parts

of the mountain before blasting. These pump systems are portable,

and move every 3-4 weeks to a new location. Ruggedness and ease

of maintenance are key items in keeping this operation going strongly.

Pumps in process industry

variable flow or constant pressureThe challenge at this chemical plant was to increase efficiency and

reduce operating costs. Regulating the flow/pressure with motor

speed using Emotron FDU AC drives instead of valves made the

operation more efficient. Set-up was quick and easy, because after

the first AC drive had been set, the settings were easily transferred

to the other drives. The energy savings alone paid back the invest-

ment in less than a year. Another result was reduced maintenance

costs and extended equipment lifetime.

Monster transportThis huge machine operating about 1000 km east of Moscow

mines and crushes limestone for cement production in one of the

largest cement plants in the region, run by JSC Mordovcement.

Commissioned in 2009, this 202m long and 48m high giant can

handle 1700 tonnes per hour, with the help of 18 Emotron automat-

ed drives four for steering alone.

Pumps in sewage treatment plantThis sewage treatment plant used to use inefficient valves used to control the start and stop sequences and mechanical

stress created maintenance issues. After they installed Emotron MSF softstarters, they experienced considerable savings

and more reliable operation. Pumps are now operating at full speed, unplanned downtime is no longer a problem and they

benefit from reduced operation costs. The money saved in the first year alone paid for the investment.
