Background ThegoaltowhichtheexpertsofDuneaarecommittedtoeverydayistheproductionofhighqualityandreliabledrinkingwaterinharmonywithnature.Over1.2millionpeoplelivinginthewesternpartofSouthHollandrelyonDuneatosupplydrinkingwater24hoursaday.WaterisabstractedinthedunesbetweenthecitiesMonsterandKatwijklocatedalongtheNorthSeacoast.Themethodforpreparingdrinkingwaterisuniqueandnotusedanywhereelseintheworld.Dunepassageisanaturaltreatmentmethodwherebyhumanerrorsarepracticallyruledoutandformsanenvironmentallyfriendlyalternativetothepurificationofwaterwithchemicals.Thewaterresourcesinthedunesaresufficientformonthsofsupply.Besidesthepurificationofdrinkingwater,Duneamanagesthestunningnatureofthedunesandprotectstheabstractionofdrinkingwater.

2. Measurement requirements

Dunearequiredelectromagneticflowmetersfortheaccuratemeasurementofthevolumeofwaterthatistransportedfromitswaterresourcesinthedunestoitspurificationplant.ThepipehasadiameterofDN900.ThemainrequirementofDuneafortheflowmeterhasbeenthatitisinstalledundergroundandthatitisprotectedagainsttemporarysubmersion.Alsotheaccuracyandreliabilityofthemeasurementhavebeentakenintoconsiderationwhileselectingaflowmeter.Inordertomaintainthewaterbalance,Duneagetspermissionforabstractingwaterfromitsresourcesandthereforethevolumesofwaterneedstobemonitoredaccurately.Seethelocationoftheflowmeter,anyrepairormaintenanceactivitiesthatneedtobedoneareverycostly.

Forapplicationswheretheflowmeterissubjecttotemporaryorpermanentsubmersionunderwater,suchasinbasements,pitsorlocationswherethemeterisburiedunderground,KROHNEhasanexcellentsolution:theOPTIFLUX2000.• Themeasuringtubeconsistsofafullyweldedstainlesssteelconstruction.Asaresulttheconstructionis100%watertightandleakfree.Itisnotnecessarytouseburial(‘bitu’)tapeasisoftenthecasewiththreadedconstructions.

• Theflowmetercanbeconstructedentirelyofstainlesssteelandhasnoplasticparts.Alsotheconnectionboxontheflowsensor,forhousingthepowercablesbetweentheflowsensorandtheconverter,canbesuppliedinstainlesssteel.Competitiveproductsoftenuseplasticmaterials,whosequalitydeteriorateovertimeandmaycauseleaks.

• Thecablescanbepouredoffalreadyduringmanufacturinginthefactoryinlengthsspecifiedbythecustomer.Duringinstallationnoadditionalactionsareneeded.

• Theflowsensorcanbeprovidedwithagroundcoatingespeciallydevelopedfortheburiedinstallations.

Theexcavationofameter,forexampleformaintenancepurpose,comeswithhighcostswhichthecustomerwantstoavoidasmuchaspossible.Themaintenance-freeconstructionofOPTIFLUX2000,asdescribedabove,gaveDuneatheconfidencetochoosefortheKROHNEsolution.Moreover,theOPTIFLUX2000isveryeasytoinstall.Integrateddiagnosticfunctionsofferthecustomertheassurancethatshouldproblemariseeitherintheprocessorwiththeflowmeter,thecustomerreceivesawarning.ThisconstructionisusedbyDuneaandmanyotherclientsalreadyforyearstotheircompletesatisfactioninundergroundinstallations.
