Scheduling of Background Jobs

APO 4.1 offers two tools to improve planning with background jobs.These tools are the automatic parallelisation and the scheduling workbenchfor complex background job chains. With APO 4.1 these tools are onlyavailable for DP and SNP applications.

In the parallelisation profile the number of parallel processes is defined.Note that one process is required to control the processing (packaging,synchronising), i.e. out of N parallel processes, N-1 processes actually do

process the functions. Therefore the minimum number of processes isthree.

Scheduling Workbench for Complex Background Jobs ChainsThe scheduling workbench for complex background job chains (transac-tion RSPC) allows scheduling complex process chains with dependenciesbetween the individual background jobs. The dependencies are maintained

• as conditions for the subsequent step based on the result of the previ-ous step (i.e. whether it has been carried out successfully, with errorsor always) and

• as conditions between steps, e.g. to start with a job only if all previ-ous jobs have been finished

as shown in figure 2 for a distribution and production planning example.

The maintenance of the process chain requires program variants as withthe standard background job scheduling (transaction SM36), but is limitedto a set of reports. Figure 3 shows the maintenance of the process chain.
