1 APPENDIX D: QUICK-START GUIDE FOR FIELD BIBLIOGRAPHERS Getting Started Once you have found time for indexing, gather your materials (e.g., publication assignments, manual, indexing notes) and find a comfortable work space. Some indexers, especially when indexing hard-copy publications, like to write out their indexing first, then log into the system at a later time to enter their citations. A benefit of this approach is that indexing can be done at any time and in any place you are working with your assignments. When reviewing documents for indexing, consider first if they are relevant to the bibliography and should be covered (see “Inclusion in the Bibliography” on page 5). Remember that indexers are required to index all articles relevant to the scope of the bibliography in any assigned document, regardless of level of expertise in a given area. If an item is for us and should be included in the bibliography, now is a good time to decide in what template(s) the citation should appear. Be sure that you are using the Google Chrome browser and that it is set to allow pop-ups for this site. If necessary, go to your browser settings to add the following URL to the list of acceptable sites for pop-ups: https://mlabib.mla.org/mla-webapp. You can download the Google Chrome browser here at https://www.google.com/chrome/. Use the INTERNAL NOTE field to indicate if a journal or book has been covered in its entirety (e.g., “Journal finished”) or if any material was not covered for being out of scope (e.g., “Article by Johnson, page 58, out of scope”). Use the FIELD BIBLIOGRAPHER ABSTRACT field to clarify the focus of a document (if you are unsure of your indexing).
