Aims for next meeting: - To develop ideas - To test magnets - To draw manual idea
Meeting finished at: 10.05pm Date of next meeting: 12.30pm on Wednesday 2nd November 2011
Minutes of the meeting of the Engineering Education Scheme 12.35pm on 2nd November 2011
Present: Farran Elvidge , Sophie Atkins, Amber Farrow, Isobel Powell, Vanessa Leung, Mrs. Charlesworth, Steve, Darren Apologies: 0
1. We discussed our ideas with Steve and Darren. We will be drawing these ideas on A4 paper, separately, instead of drawing it on the A3 paper. We would then further develop our own ideas. Action: FE, SA, AF, IP, VL
2. We asked questions from previous minutes such as the ‘twisty’ things, laser beam heat, dimensions of the shield and about the vacuum. Darren will give us a book about vacuum and will give us the dimensions of the shield and cut out hole next meeting. Action: DN
3. We went through the project brief and specification. We will be changing the format to. The format layout will be: - Brief - Introduction to the design - Problem - Talk about materials, what vacuum is, what material to use etc. - Specification We should also set it under aesthetics(which is functional) and environmental(the vacuum pressure is 1.0 × 10-6 millibar). Action: FE, SA, AF, IP, VL
4. To know more, we should go on the STFC website, then central laser facility to research about Astra Gemini. The Gemini target area is where the mirror would be. (Here’s the link: http://www.stfc.ac.uk/) Action: FE, SA, AF, IP, VL
5. We talked about the maintenance of the shield. We thought of using a plastic cover on the shield and to peel it off and replace it when it gets dirty.

Minutes of the meeting of the Engineering Education Scheme 7.40pm on 7th November 2011
Present: Farran Elvidge , Sophie Atkins, Amber Farrow, Vanessa Leung Apologies: Isobel Powell
1. We discussed everyone’s design ideas and further developed it. We went through and discussed the design brief. As for the time plan, the weeks/blocks needs to be filled in. We still need to further develop our ideas and combine ideas together. Action: FE, SA, AF
2. As Issy was not in the meeting, please could you type up 2 paragraphs of what a laser is, what it does and what it will be used. The second paragraph about what a shield will do, what our shield will do and achieve. Action: IP
Meeting finished at: 8.15pm Date of next meeting: 12.00pm 9th November 2011
Minutes of the meeting of the Engineering Education Scheme 1.00pm on 9th November 2011
Present: Farran Elvidge , Sophie Atkins, Amber Farrow, Isobel Powell, Vanessa Leung, Mrs. Charlesworth, Steve, Darren Apologies: 0
1. We visited the lab today. The parabolic mirrors are focused by the beam. A slight adjustment will cause the beam to produce a cloud of rubbish and each time there has to be a clean, clear surfaced mirror for the beam to focus on. The shield will rarely move inside the vacuum chamber. It is adjusted outside before placing it in the chamber. So we have to rethink our designs and combine ideas together. We have to draw new ideas before next meeting. Action: FE, SA, AF, IP, VL
2. We also visited the target area. It would be better not to attach anything on the walls or on top while designing the shield as the pressure in vacuum chamber would cause changes to the walls so it would affect anything attached to walls. There is also a small lense which is similar to a CCTV on one corner of the chamber.
3. We got the book about vacuum and the dimensions of the mirror. It will be very useful when designing the shield. Bring the book to the next meeting while discussing our ideas. Action: FE, SA, AF, IP, VL
Meeting finished at: 2.15pm Date of next meeting: 7.30pm on 11th November 2011
Minutes of the meeting of the Engineering Education Scheme 7.40pm on 11th November 2011
Present: Farran Elvidge, Sophie Atkins, Amber Farrow, Isobel Powell, Vanessa Leung, Apologies: 0
1. We thought of new ideas as our old ideas were designed to move inside the vacuum chamber. We thought of using screws and the shield should be manually adjustable, such as using screws. The adjusters of the shield should be closest to the window as it will be easy to reach for it and not be in an awkward position. By next meeting, we should research 2 ways of manually adjustments and come up designs which can be adjusted outside the vacuum chamber. Action: FA, SA, AF, IP, VL
Meeting finished at: 8.15pm Date of next meeting: 7.30pm on 15th November 2011
Minutes of the meeting of the Engineering Education Scheme 8.20pm on 15th November 2011
Present: Farran Elvidge, Sophie Atkins, Amber Farrow, Isobel Powell, Vanessa Leung, Apologies: 0
1. We corrected and finished the brief and specification. We still need to know the movements of the mirror and shield in the chamber once it’s closed. Will it be moving sideways, upwards or tilting?
2. We need to draw at least one design by tomorrow meeting. Think about adjustments of the shield outside the chamber and screws needed etc. Action: FE, SA, AF, IP, VL
Meeting finished at: 8.45pm Date of next meeting: 12.30pm on 16th November 2011
Minutes of the meeting of the Engineering Education Scheme 12.53pm on 16th November 2011
Present: Farran Elvidge, Sophie Atkins, Amber Farrow, Isobel Powell, Vanessa Leung, Darren, Mrs Charlesworth Apologies: Steve
1. We have to design ideas and finish the agenda by next meeting so we can develop two ideas on the meeting. And on Wednesday’s meeting, we will finalize one idea. Action: FE, SA, AF, IP, VL
2. Amber discussed her idea, which includes a pointer on the mirror, it can prevent scratching between the shield and mirror. There should be 2-4 point of contact.
3. We asked about the dimensions of mirror and the degree that the mirror will tilt. Action: Darren
Meeting finished at: 1.15pm Date of next meeting: 7.30pm on Tuesday 16th November 2011
Minutes of the meeting of the Engineering Education Scheme 9.20pm on 22nd November 2011
Present: Farran Elvidge, Sophie Atkins, Amber Farrow, Isobel Powell, Vanessa Leung 1. We discussed our designed ideas and proposed 2 ideas by Farran and Sophie/Amber which
we thought were the best. We will choose a final idea at tomorrow’s meeting.
2. We also completed the agenda.
Meeting finished at: 9.40pm Date of next meeting: 12.30pm on 23rd November 2011
Minutes of the meeting of the Engineering Education Scheme 12.35pm on 23rd November 2011
Present: Farran Elvidge, Sophie Atkins, Amber Farrow, Isobel Powell, Vanessa Leung, Steve, Darren, Mrs Charlesworth
1. We discussed the developed ideas and decided to combine all three concepts if
necessary. We thought contact points may not be necessary as the shield will rest on the
mirror and may not scratch the main part of the mirror. We could use Sophie’s idea as a
prototype and Amber’s idea as a development idea. Also, if we have any questions, we
can Skype with Peta and ask her.
2. We should check the delivery dates for parts/materials required as they take about 6
weeks to be delivered. As for Farran’s design, could she research about threads.
Action: FE, AF, SA, IP, VL 3. As for the time plan, some dates should be changed as there are some errors and to
include some more tasks. Also, tasks should be broken down to: Start, Middle, End.
Action: FE, IP, SA, AF, VL
4. We should draw up 2D drawings/sketches by the meeting on Wednesday with top, side
and front view.
Action: FE, AF, SA, IP, VL
5. Steve will send the dimensions of mirror, drawing of the holder and check debris.
Action: Steve
Meeting finished at: 1.15pm Date of next meeting: TBC
Minutes of the meeting of the Engineering Education Scheme 7.38pm on 24th November 2011
Present: Farran Elvidge, Sophie Atkins, Amber Farrow, Vanessa Leung Apologies: Isobel Powell
1. Farran brought a simple model of the design. We still have to think about the shield tilting as
the current model can only go forward/backwards and up/down. We looked at Amber’s
gear, which can go 360 degrees and can be useful. We will draw the dimensional drawings of
the ideas on A3 paper next meeting (Tuesday).
Action: FE, AF, SA, IP, VL Meeting finished at: 8.10pm Date of next meeting: Tuesday 29th November 2011
Minutes of the meeting of the Engineering Education Scheme 12.42pm on 30th November 2011
Present: Farran Elvidge, Sophie Atkins, Amber Farrow, Isobel Powell, Vanessa Leung, Mrs Charlesworth, Steve, Darren Apologies: 0
1. Issy: Ondrives website would be a better website to find gears.
2. We discussed Sophie and Amber’s ideas. We would need to draw an orthographic drawing
of the design and produce a cutting list as soon possible before the workshop. We also need
to write a flowchart.
Action: SA, AF, FE, IP, VL
3. We need to think of a way to measure the degree when the shield tilts, and know the exact
dimensions of the gear. The ball and socket idea is an alternative idea.
Action: SA, AF, FE, IP, VL
4. We need to discuss workshop details on 8.30am on Saturday with Mrs Charlesworth.
Meeting finished at: 1.15pm Date of next meeting: 7.30pm Friday 2nd December 2011
Minutes of the meeting of the Engineering Education Scheme 7.40pm on 2nd December 2011
Present: Farran Elvidge, Sophie Atkins, Amber Farrow, Isobel Powell, Vanessa Leung Apologies: 0
1. We decided not to use the gear as it takes too long to be delivered. It takes approximately 3
months to be delivered and it is too complicated.
2. We designed a simple mechanism to tilt the shield and measure it at the same time. It is
similar to a ball and socket, which can be tightened and adjusted easily. There are 2 rings
which are connected to the stick and can be adjusted when loosened. We have drawn out
the basic idea of the design, with basic dimensions. We still need to produce a cutting list
and flowchart.
Action: SA, AF, IP, FE, VL
3. We are not sure of the angle of the shield and need to ask Peta about it.
Action: VL
4. Issy would be scanning our initial ideas which will be drawn with pen over it and to be put in
the file.
Action: IP
Meeting finished at: 8.30pm Date of next meeting: TBC

1. We did the presentation and it was around 15 minutes and received some
feedback.
- We need to speak slower
- We only need notes and not read it out from the paper
- Make sure what we are saying matches the slide from the powerpoint
- We should give more examples, especially for initial and final design
- We will need to add more about the design itself and less on research,
emphasizing how important the design was. Also, we need to include a slide
for manufacturing along with the design.
- We have to explain more clearly about the aim of our design and explain
what RAL is.
- We were not clear enough about the design and the testing. Also, we will
need to describe what our test was and how to test it etc.
- Abbreviate PEEK and find out what its structure is.
- We will need to add another slide after conclusion for acknowledgments and
give an ending.
- We need include project planning in the time plan.
- We may have to change/delete some slides to make sure the presentation fits
in 15 minutes.
- All props out for the presentation.
Action: FE, IP, SA, AF, VL
2. We have decided to put the slide ‘STFC’ and ‘Astra Gemini’ together, take away
the research slide about ‘high vacuum’ and ‘gas flow in vacuum’. ‘Initial ideas’
should be more detailed and should be placed before ‘materials under vacuum’.
We have to add manufacturing with the final design slide.
