Helen Keller once said,

“I long to accomplish a great

and noble task. But it is my chief

duty to accomplish humble tasks as

though they were great and noble”

Just What Are Story Walks?

Bringing the library to the community

Story walks are a fun and interactive way for families and friends to experience a

book together while encouraging reading, literacy,

and movement.

Story Books: Suggested Book Titles

Choose books that are age appropriate for your audience, with simple text with vibrant pictures, be aware of the length of the books, how many post you have, and the

format and design of the book.

What about Copy Rights? What, the books are torn apart!!!!

“The books cannot be altered in any way and the pages cannot be scanned or reproduced without

permission from the publisher. They can be mounted on card stock and laminated. It’s good practice to make a point of purchasing new books, not taking donations or

buying used books, in order for the writers and illustrators to get full benefit. Try to buy your supplies from local businesses as a great way to support your

community.”http://www.letsgo.org/wp-content/uploads/ECTab05D10_InterestedinCreatingYourOwnStoryWalk.pdf

Lessons Learned*The project was truly a labor of love and took MUCH more time than we

allotted for in the grant

*We still haven’t found an entirely waterproof solution.  Perhaps thicker laminate is the answer? As well as a large border of laminate

*Replacement “lenses” are expensive and can be “tricky” to order since they are not listed on the Displays2Go website

*Getting written feedback was challenging, but we got a Lot of positive oral feedback.

*Plastic “real estate” style boxes did not hold up well in a     playground environment.  Perhaps metal locking boxes?

*Blowing Rock tourists didn’t feel their feedback would be beneficial since they   weren’t planning to use our library.

*Amazon e-book invoices are time consuming for libraries to handle

*Make ACCURATE publicity a priority.

Survey CommentsGreat experience with my grandson! Thanks so much for this

opportunity to read a book while playing at the Tot Lot!! Very

Fun. I love the library . I am always at the library. My sons favorite part of

going to the Tot Lot. We love Story Walks.

Great one to encourage attention to language development in small kids plus fun for big kids too. We enjoyed having the distraction of the story pages at the playground . My daughter asked to go to story time

when she saw the book pages. Fun to do with Father too. I liked the activities at the bottom of the page. Great Idea!

As an English teacher, I love this walk. I’m going home to encourage my daughter to do the same at her primary

school! My kids said I want to go to the park with the story. I like that I can read a book while I’m on my bike.
