Welcome to the seventh edition of Chomp’s App Search Analytics Report!

Chompʼs technology powers the most advanced search engine for native and web apps across the worldwide iOS and Android markets. The metrics outlined in this report provide insight into app search trends across iOS and Android using Chompʼs on-device search functionality within the US during the month of April.

Chomp for Android launched on February 28, 2011. Android and iOS metrics included in this edition of App Search Analytics refers to data collected April 1 - 30 but references previous months for trending and comparison purposes.

App Search AnalyticsTop QueriesOnly one app title made the elite top 25 queries on iOS and Android. Searches for “concerts”, “free photography apps”, “chat” and three others make their first appearance on the top 25 lists.

App MonetizationPaid app downloads on Android decrease 2% but increase by 4% on iOS with peak growth occurring between the $0.99 - $3.99 price points. With 64% of all apps costing $0 on Android and only 36% on iOS, free apps continue to win the app download race.

Best in CategoryWith 18 given app categories in Android and 20 in iTunes, “Games” and “Entertainment” account for 46.5% of Android and 40.8% of iOS downloads. “Utilities” earns the #3 position while “news” loses a combine 3.3% of marketshare across both platforms.

April SpotlightCurrent Event Related QueriesWith the baseball season in full swing, app seekers took aim at finding the top baseball apps on their respective markets. The term ʻbaseballʼ was entered 43% more in April than the previous month.

International Search Trends (& top apps!)With the explosion of apps globally, Chomp offers a snapshot of unique queries by country and shares top app downloads across Android and iOS abroad. From Australia to Hong Kong, app seekers showcase an array of interest from adventure games to news and utilities.

The Chomp 55Find out which iPhone and Android apps won the hearts and minds of Chomp users during April.Five (or more) of the top 10 ten Chomp 55 apps are paid for the third month in a row (iOS). Androidʼs top 10 gets diverse, featuring apps from five different categories.

The “Top Queries” list shows the top 25 entries typed into the Chomp search box specifically for iOS during April. Compared to March, the ratio of function vs name queries shifted only 2% in favor of name searches.

On Chomp, 97% of all Android Downloads were free, a 2% increase over March. The $4.01 - $5 prices point stayed consistent with .3% of the download volume since March whereas all other paid apps declined. Android users applied the ʻfreeʼ filter 12% of the time whereas 33% of all iOS queries were submitted with the ʻfreeʼ filter.

Developers with paid apps in iTunes saw downloads increase by 3.8% combined, compared to March. Price points that show the most growth are $.99 (1.9%), $1.99 (.7%), and $2.99 (.6%). Of apps priced above $14.99, the $23.99 point took 37% of the market share.

Games and entertainment combine for 10.2% increase since March, securing 46.5% of total downloads by category. Other positive trends occurred in photography (+1.2%), music (+.5%), books (+.4%) and healthcare (+.2). The category with the highest loss was utilities (-3.7%). Android users opted to filter their searches for ʻgamesʼ only 3.2% of the time.

Game downloads on iOS increased by 7.4% - most over any platform or category in April. Utilities climbs to #3 position from #6 with 2.2% gain over March. Entertainment, Photography and music grew 5%, 1.9%, and .2%. Reference fell from position #5 to #7 with a loss of 4.3%.

App queries correlate with real time events.April marks opening day and trending app queries for ʻbaseballʼ. The highest traffic days are within one week of opening day. Overall trending for ʻbaseballʼ increased by 72% month over month between February and April.

Free searches abroad appear 20% more on Android than iOS.The snapshot below represents the top queries and subsequent app downloads on select countries around the globe through the Chomp app on Android. Though the US and UK are the only markets with localized Chomp results, traction is steadily growing in other parts of the world.
