My App The Journey
+My ‘Group’ and it’s skills
n As I was away for 2 of the lectures due to a religious event happening abroad, I decided to do this project on my own as I didn’t want the group I would have been working with to feel they have to do all the work.
n Therefore, I was in charge of all the research, planning and designing.
n As I was working on my own, I had to use all my possible skills to make this project successful
n Working on my own did allow me to use my own ideas without having to confer with anyone however it did mean a lot of work
+Initial Ideas
n My initial idea is to target a niche audience which is those who are interested in Bollywood and specifically the Bollywood actress, Deepika Padukone. The app would include a selection of features that would interest Deepika fans and those who would like to know more about her. These features are: n A biography – information would be from Wikipedia however I will put it in
my own words n A list of her films with a short synopsis and cast – also from Wikipedia and
IMDB n A gallery of photos and videos – includes pictures from her photo-shoots
and films and videos of songs from films, trailers of films and press conferences – from YouTube
n A playlist of songs – songs from films that she has starred in n A trivia quiz – questions relating Deepika and her films
n To make sure I could continue with this idea I had to do a quick initial research on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store to make sure there aren’t any similar apps like this of Deepika Padukone available and luckily there aren’t any.
+Research: Similar Apps n When searching on the App Store and Google Play Store, I
did find a few apps based on the Bollywood actress however they did not offer what my app would be offering. There were quite a few apps based on Bollywood on the whole.
+Research: Codes & Conventions (Form)
n Majority of Apps follow a certain interface and include key features. Some features are seen as compulsory as an app wouldn’t be seen as an app.
n The app I am creating is about an actress (i.e. a fan app) and will include a biography, a gallery, videos, list of her films, possibly a playlist of her songs and a trivia quiz. Apps like these have a few other codes and conventions it must include such as in the gallery it should have an option to enlarge an image and zoom in. it should also have an option to save the picture without taking a picture of the screen. The videos should have an option to watch the video in landscape mode if the rest of the app is in portrait mode. For the playlist, the tracks should have a the key features of playing them so a play/pause button, a stop, forward and rewind button, a shuffle and loop button. The trivia quiz should include a quit and next button.
+Research: Target Audience
n The audience for phone and tablet apps in general is very wide; children from the age 3 to older adults.
n Phone apps are typically used by people from ages 10 to 40 however majority of people have access to a Smartphone or a tablet meaning they are continuously accessing apps from a route finder app to an alarm clock app.
n Each app has a different target audience but it doesn’t mean that other audiences cannot use it. For example games apps are typically for kids however some games such as Temple Run and Candy Crush Saga is played by adults more.
n The audience for my app is potentially those who are fans of Deepika Padukone. However the app does offer other features that the user does not have to be a fan of her but can be just listening to the songs or want to find out information about her films. The gender is also equally spread as males will be interested in her and females will tend to idolise and look up to her. I will target my app to people who are 13+ as I don’t think anyone younger will be as interested.

n After researching, I then started giving my initial ideas a visual look by sketching out the interfaces.

n I created an interactive prototype using the sketches of the interfaces in order to make sure that navigation is user-friendly.

n When creating the wireframes on LucidChart, I selected my font and colours that I will use throughout the creation of the app.

n The reasons why I have chosen those fonts and colours is because: n I feel that Font A is an elegant looking font and
Deepika Padukone is an elegant actress. This font can be used for the headings. Font B can be used for information and other texts as Font A may be hard to read.
n When I searched ‘Deepika Padukone’ on Google Images, she wears a lot of soft colours like peach and beige. I found beige a bit too light so I decided to use a dark peach and a light peach colour with a dark chocolate-y brown as it compliments with the peaches.
+Planning: Wireframes
n I then created wireframes, a digital prototype with colour giving the project a better visual.
+Planning: Trivia Quiz Questions
n After planning the theme of the app, I started on the content of the app.
n I decided to start on the trivia quiz questions as I had to create the questions. Whereas the biography and film information was all ready to copy and paste from Wikipedia and IMDb.

n I then found all the content for the biography, films and awards.
+Designing: AppFurnace
n When I started on the App on AppFurnace.com, it took me a while to get used to with the basic navigation and what each widget does. AppFurnace had really good help forums and have 'guides' for coding. This helped me get the first bit of coding started
+Designing: Changes to Initial Ideas
n I've had to make a few changes to my initial ideas. Firstly, the two fonts I had chosen were from LucidChart, where I had created the wireframes, and these fonts were not available on AppFurnace. Therefore I had to find something similar from the fonts that AppFurnace offered. I haven't had to change any of the colours as I have used the six digit code that signifies each colour.
n Secondly, due to understanding AppFurnace and what I can do on it I've realised that I no longer need a Settings page as the things I had included were just extra things and not important. It also would have meant that coding maybe more complex and as I am working on my own I did not want to complicate things due to short time.
n Thirdly, I changed the layout of the menu as I started to gather more ideas whilst creating the other pages.

+Evaluation
What went well? n This project was quite similar to the work I have done previously
in terms of blogging about the research and planning of a product. I made sure I blogged all the research I have done and how I progress in the creation of the app. One skill that came in handy was organisation. Organisation was a key skill in AppFurnace as pages, files and functions had to be named properly. My previous skills on blogging were also useful as I knew how to blog and embed files such as a Prezi Presentation or a SlideShare Document. My method of keeping my blog up to date during the creation of the app, I made sure I took sufficient print screens of the work I had completed in the day or once I had finished a section of the app. In this project, my research and planning was well done and so I didn’t have any issues in creating the app. This allowed me to create the app without having to go back to find any content. It also helped that the person I had chosen to base my fan app on was someone I was familiar with and knew a lot about.

What I could improve on?
n If I had a chance to improve my app, I would add more videos, images and questions for trivia quiz. I would also try and embed the latest news page in the app so it doesn’t open up in a separate webpage.

If I was to do this project again, what would I do differently? n If I was to do this project again, I would firstly look at the
software I will be using to create the app on and see what it offers so I know what to include in the planning because I had planned out some features that I didn’t know how to do when it came to creating it on AppFurnace. And I didn’t add some features in the planning as I didn’t know I could do that for example I had added a shuffle and loop button in my planning for the songs page however I did not know how to make those buttons work when it came to designing it on AppFurnace.
