Dear friends,
“To be and make disciples for Christ” serves as the mission
statement of this congregation and it is an honor to be joining you
in ministry as your pastor!
A pastor’s beginning in a new church is marked by a steep
learning curve: names, meeting many people, traditions,
practices, administrative details, ministry teams, community
connections, establishing goals, etc. Away from church there is
acclimating to a new home, neighborhood and community.
For a congregation, the call process is far more than simply calling a new pastor. It is a
congregation assessing its mission, determining their strength and growth areas, discerning what
gifts they seek in a new pastor to lead them, considering how best they can individually assist in
the transition of leadership while trusting that God is present and active throughout the process.
Through it all, reflecting back on the past, looking to the future and joining in ministry today.
Together, we will join in mission and ministry where our mission statement “To be and make
disciples for Christ” will be at the forefront. As these initial weeks pass by, there will be learning
for all of us. Questions will be asked. Answers will be shared. Goals will be set. Various facets of
ministry will be assessed. God will continue to guide us as He has done even before the call
process was completed.
Yet, amid all the details of ministry, at the center of it all is joy. Joy that we are children of a
loving, forgiving God that we can approach with the endearing referral of: Father.
Joy in recalling all the blessings of ministry that has become a part of the history of Apostles.
Joy in the excitement that comes with a new beginning of ministry.
Joy that amid it all, we are a gathered, strong, vibrant community of faith equipped to do great
things for the kingdom of God!
“To be and make disciples for Christ.” What will that mean for you and me now and in the near
future? Let’s join together and see what God can do among us and for others!
Blessings to you this summer,
Pastor Jim

Book Study
An adult study on “Honoring Our Neighbor’s Faith” starts on Monday
June 6th at 7:00 PM or Thursday, June 9th at 11:00 AM in the Vestry. This book
explores thirty-two faith traditions that represent a wide spectrum of beliefs or
stand out due to their size or public profile in America.
Hundreds of Christian denominations & dozens of non-Christian traditions have
followers in the United States. How do we view this wide variety of beliefs and
practices? How does the Lutheran tradition compare with others?
Honoring Our Neighbor’s Faith Revised Edition brings new light and nuance to these
questions, which are as timely and vital as ever.
There are a couple of extra books and they are $13.00. Are you interested? Contact Liz Jimenez by
email ([email protected]) or phone (813-689-2571)
At our May Semi-annual meeting we elected or reelected five Council representatives: Toni
Carey, Jim Gray, Scott Irwin, Christopher Murray, & Mike Weber. They join Lori Brown,
Maryann Di Leo, Darren Jimenez, Maria Mitchell, Chris Putnam, Joel Rentz, & Greg Williams
to comprise Apostles new Council.
The next Council Meeting is on Sunday, June 12 at Noon in the Vestry.
Sunday Adult Education
The weekly Sunday adult education
gathering will take a summer break. Class
will resume on Sunday, September 11. We
will pick up where we left off— journeying
through the Old Testament at the book of
2nd Samuel. Read your September Epistle for
more information, or contact Mike Weber at

Health Ministry Moves Forward
Our health is a gift from God and Apostles’ Health Ministry is moving forward to assist in
addressing health needs, while equipping everyone with healthy practices for living.
Thank you to all who have completed a health survey. If you have not
completed yours yet, please take a moment to complete the “Health
Ministry Survey” (found in last month’s newsletter, in the bulletins on
Sunday morning and in the church office) to share your input in
guiding this ministry. It is vital that we hear from as many people as
possible. After all the information is analyzed, we can form a program
that fits the needs of the people of Apostles.
Apostles member, Judy Valleri, RN, is faithfully leading this effort, with her health care expertise.
You can drop off your completed survey in the designated box on Sunday mornings.
For more information, contact Judy at [email protected]. Thank you!

Discipleship Opportunities
Yes, it’s June again, and that
brings hotter, humid weather and
the beginning of hurricane
season. Hurricane season is from
June 1st-Nov. 30th. While areas
around us have been hit by
storms, we haven’t had a hurricane hit the Tampa
Bay area in almost 100 years. That does not mean
that we shouldn’t have a hurricane plan in place.
Storms, especially in the Gulf of Mexico, can
develop quickly and severely.
Do you have a plan?
Even if there's no risk of a hurricane right now,
make sure you and your family are prepared. Here
are some easy things to do to be ready:
Stock up on emergency supplies for your home and
car, such as non-perishable food items (canned
food with pop tops or meals ready to eat
‘MRE”), water, batteries, hand sanitizer, wet
wipes, first aid kit, and battery powered fans.
Also money, because ATMs don’t work if the
power goes out.
Write down emergency phone numbers and keep
them near every phone in your house or on the
refrigerator. Program them into your cell
phone, too.
Buy a fire extinguisher and make sure your family
knows where to find it and how to use it.
Find out where the nearest
shelter is and the different
routes you can take to get there
if you have to leave your home.
If you have pets, make sure
your shelter of choice will
accept animals. Not all of them do. Also, make
copies of your pets vaccine records and keep
them with your emergency travel supplies.
Make sure that everyone in your family knows
what the warning sirens in your area sound like
— and what to do if they go off.
Make sure that your out-of-town relatives know
what your hurricane plans are. Think of the
stress that they would be under if a storm were
to hit this area and they didn’t know your plan,
and couldn’t reach you by phone.
Keep a copy of your homeowner’s insurance,
medications, and any medical information in a
zip-lock bag that can easily be taken with you if
you have to evacuate.
Make sure you have your cell phone, charger ( wall
and car) and also a portable power charger for
the phone.
Having a GPS — either in your car or on your
smartphone — can help during an emergency too.
Visit Ready.gov for more information on
emergency plans and supply kits.
Apostles next Blood Drive
Sunday, June 12, 2016 from 8:30AM —1:00 PM.
Get ready to roll up your sleeves & donate blood to give someone the Gift
of Life! Are you over 16 years of age (16 with parental permission) and in
good health? You can probably donate blood. Check with the bloodmobile
staff to be sure. Please remember to bring your photo ID.
You can make an appointment online at: www.oneblooddonor.org using sponsor code #11840 or
just come to the mobile unit when they are here.

Mission Quilts for Lutheran World Relief
The ultimate purpose of a Mission Quilt is to pro-
vide warmth, an essential need for people in every
climate.
In addition to being a cozy, clean new bed cover, it
can be:
a baby carrier, tied around a mother’s back;
a market display, spread on the ground and piled
with vegetables;
a sack for transporting those goods to market;
a sunshade;
a shawl; and most importantly
These quilts are a constant reminder that someone, far
away, cares for them!
In April we came together to make 48 mission quilts for
Lutheran World Relief! That was the most ever!
Everyone is invited to come and help us break the record!
Invite your friends and neighbors. The more hands, the
more quilts! You do not have to be a “quilter” to help.
There are jobs for ironers, pinners, folders, and jobs for
those who can tie knots.
This is a family event!
Lunch & refreshments are provided.
Come take part in this fun and very rewarding day!!!
Discipleship Opportunities
Rebecca’s Circle will host
“Caring & Sewing
Saturday”
in Theisz Hall on Saturday,
August 13
from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM.

Help our Veterans through AMVets
AMVets (American Veterans) is one of America’s
leading veterans service organizations with over
250,000 members. AMVETS assists veterans and
sponsors numerous programs that serve our coun-
try and its citizens. Their mission statement is to
enhance and safeguard the entitlements for all
American Veterans who have served honorably
and to improve the quality of life for them, their families, and the communities where they live.
How can we help? The AmVets have need of: Books, puzzles, games, DVD or VHS movies, and
small household items. They also have a special need for watches that are in working order ex-
cept for batteries.
Put all items, marked AMVets, in the yellow barrel in the Vestry.
Our veterans thank you for your continued help & support!
Don Desmarais will deliver all items to the AMVets. Call him for information at 813-661-5588.
Adopt –a Garden
Do you love to work in
the yard, plant plants,
pull weeds, or mow
the grass?
Do you have a few
h o u r s s o m e t i m e
during the week that
you would be willing
to give to Apostles?
Holly Smith, operations team member, has a
garden chart on the bulletin board outside
the office. Take a look and see if there is an
area where you would like to help. Give
Holly a call at (813-597-7593 (c) or 689-9795
and she will be happy to put you to work.
Help People Who are
Homeless
Four or more times a year,
Apostles partners with
Church of the Nazarene to
help feed people in our community who are
homeless. Our next opportunity to live out our
discipleship in this way is on Saturday, July 30
at 9:00 AM,.
Would you like to help?
We need people to help serve breakfast, bake
ahead breakfast casseroles, make peanut butter
& jelly sandwiches, bring bananas, cookies, tea,
water or lemonade.
Would you like to be part of this outreach? Call
Gerry Brown at 813-661–7305 or Liz Jimenez in
the church office at 689-2571.
Living Christ's Love for Summer
Thank you to all who help us help others!
We stock a pantry full of non-perishable foods for Apostles
families and others who are experiencing difficult times.
If you would like to help stock the Living Christ’s Love
shelves, we gladly accept any and all donations.
The pantry is currently low on: Canned meats (tuna, chicken, Spam); Canned fruit (peaches,
applesauce, etc.); Snack crackers; Canned veggies; soups; & Canned Ravioli or Spaghetti.
Please put your donations in the basket in the Vestry on Sunday mornings or drop them off in
the church office.
If you or anyone you know are struggling and in need of the food pantry, please call the church
office (689-2571). It is strictly confidential.

Day Camp Volunteer Opportunities!
During the week of July 11-15, 80+ children will have
the chance to learn about God’s love for them while
attending Day Camp/VBS here at Apostles. Many volunteers are needed to ensure a safe &
successful week for the children. If you are called to serve God in this ministry, look for the
DayCamp/VBS Volunteer sheets outside the lobby.
Provide Housing for LOMF Staff Members It is required that at least 2 counselors stay in each host home. They arrive Sunday evening,
July 10 and leave Friday morning, July 15. Counselors provide their own transportation.
If you cannot house our counselors but would be willing to cook dinner one evening for
them, let Kit O’Rourke ([email protected]) know. Breakfast and lunch are provided by
Apostles.
Contact Kit O’Rourke (813-689-2571 or [email protected]) if you would like to
help or have questions.

Women’s Night Out for Summer
Women's Night Out has been a monthly activity here at Apostles for over 20 years. It's been a time
where women of varied ages and family lifestyles (single, married, divorced, widowed, kids, no kids)
have enjoyed different restaurant cuisines, laughed, shared stories and difficulties, and prayers. Women's
Night Out is a time to relax and enjoy fellowship with other ladies from our church and their friends.
On Sunday. June 5, Women’s Night Out will get together here at Apostles for a
Girl’s Only Pot-luck and Video Night. Debbie Nickeson has chosen “And I Mean
That in the Best Possible Way” with comedian Anita Renfroe for us to watch.
Plan to bring food to share and come ready to eat, share time with friends and laugh.
Please sign up so we have a variety of delicious food.
We will begin at 5:30 PM in either the Café/Vestry or Theisz Hall.

Ladies, for July & August we will take some “road trips”!
July 10, 2016 – PF Chang’s China Bistro, 219 Westshore Plaza, Tampa
(Due to July 4th weekend, this is the 2nd Sunday in July.)
August 7– Ulele (You-lay-lee) 1810 North Highland Ave. in Tampa Heights
For both of these “roadtrips” we will meet at Apostles at 5:30 PM to carpool.
Call (684-8587) or email ([email protected]) Debbie Nickeson if you have questions or would like to join
in the fun of any of these summer Women’s Night Out.

The men of Apostles and
their friends get together
on the 1st and 3rd Saturday
of each month.
On the first Saturday they have breakfast and
reflect on the ELCA’s Daily Discipleship
questionnaire for that week's Gospel lesson.
Howard McNair ([email protected]) facilitates the
first Saturday group.
On the 3rd Saturday they use the Master Builder
Bible Study for men. There are extra copies of the
Master Builder Bible available. Mike Weber
([email protected]) facilitates this group.
Both groups meet through the summer in the
North Theisz Hall classroom.
When You Are Hospitalized
To provide pastoral care and to be aware of health
needs of those in this congregation, please contact the
church office when you are hospitalized. Mindful of
HIPAA guidelines and to have
accurate information, Pastor Jim
would greatly appreciate knowing
when hospitalizations occur, so he
can visit those who are ill and
healing. Please either call the
church office at 813-689-2571 or email Pastor Jim at
[email protected] with that information.
Thank you for your assistance!

given in the confirmands honor

confirmand had the opportunity
to share their faith essay and then received a gift from the congregation.
During worship we were
blessed by the gift of
special music from
Apostles’ Children’s Choir
and the family and friends
of Jon Karthaka, as well as
from the Gloria Dei Choir
and ICHTHUS.
Following worship, there was a cake reception in Theisz Hall honor our Confirmands.
It was a glorious day of celebration as family, friends, teachers and mentors came together to
