The Apollo family of packet-optical transport platforms is the ideal

choice for profitable data center connectivity applications. This is due

to its dense, modular architecture, value-added data center centric

features, and powerful supporting software for network management

    and end-user control.

Data Center Connectivity means Business Resilience

Data is the lifeblood of business. It must be accessible easily across the enterprise to empower

applications and services to end-customers. Data must also be replicated among multiple physical

locations to ensure business continuity in the event of equipment failures or disasters. Businesses

are increasingly dependent on distributed data centers to fulfill these needs, with data center

connectivity being the arteries which carry this corporate lifeblood between enterprise locations

and data centers, and between the data centers themselves.

Right-Sized End-to-End Data Center Connectivity Solutions

The Apollo family consists of three packet-optical transport platforms capable of implementing

data center connectivity as either point-to-point configurations, or as a network-based service.

    These include:

OPT9603 2U, 19" rack mountable for data center CLE, 3 slots, AC power option, stackable

OPT9608 5U, 19" rack mountable for data center CLE, 8 slots

    OPT9624 Network-based platform, 24 slots

By leveraging a common set of blades across these platforms, Apollo delivers end-to-end data

center connectivity that is right-sized, service-transparent, low latency, operationally robust, and

full of value-added data center centric features to ensure a solution optimized to your needs.

    Unparalleled Interface Richness and Density

Apollo blades can be used interchangeably across all of its platforms for ease-of-planning and to

drive economies-of-scale. The table below summarizes a subset of the Apollo service interface

blades that support Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel data center interfaces. All the multi-

service muxponder blades also support TDM interfaces (not shown in the table), and can be usedfor piggybacking additional TDM services on its colored wavelength at minimal incremental cost.

Apollo's blades feature unparalleled interface density and low power to drive a small footprint and

control costs. To highlight some examples:

    The AoC10 10G muxponder supports a mix of 48/128 clients of 1GbE or FC-1/2/4 in the OPT9603/08

    CLE platforms.

The TR10_12 10G transponder supports a mix of 18/48 clients of 10GbE or FC-8/10/16 in the

    OPT9603/08 CLE platforms.

    The TM100 CFP-based metro 100G muxponder supports a total of 30/80 short-reach 10GbE

clients in the OPT9603/08 CLE platforms. This is illustrated below for the OPT9603, showing

how these 30 client interfaces multiplex onto three 100G coherent metro network interfaces

for transporting over 1200 km without regeneration.

Value Added Data Center Centric Features

Beyond connectivity benefits, Apollo focuses on your profitability, through a multitude of powerful,

value-added features, focused on powering data center connectivity applications.

16G Fibre Channel This fifth generation FC technology is provided via the ultra-dense

    TR10_12 10G transponder. 18 FC-16 clients are supported on the OPT9603, and 48 FC-16 clients

    are supported on the OPT9608.

Ultra Low Latency The majority of data center connectivity applications, such as data access

or data backup, requires latency in the tens of milliseconds, which is supported by standard OTN.

For some data center connectivity applications, such as real-time recording of stock market

financial transactions, even lower latency connectivity is desired. The ultra-dense TR10_12 10G

transponder can provide ultra-low nanosecond latency by bypassing the OTN mapping function

and inserting data directly into a colored wavelength for DWDM transport.

Layer 1 Optical Encryption To protect against the interception of enterprise data by passively

tapping into an optical fiber, the TR10_4EN provides Layer 1 optical encryption that can be applied

to Ethernet, Fibre Channel, and TDM client services. Data is secured from the point at which it

enters the network until it leaves, using a 256-bit key, which is the highest level of the Advanced

    Encryption Standard (AES-256).

    Apollo Layer 1 Opcal Encrypon

Multi-vendor Storage System Interworking All Apollo blades are certified to interwork

with storage equipment from EMC, the world's largest supplier of storage systems, and others.

LAN Extension Service While data center connectivity is mostly implemented as a Layer 1

transparent transport service, in some instances it may be desirable to handle it as a Layer 2 packet

LAN extension service. Apollo can provide this through the AoC10_L2 blade, which integrates packet

services into Apollo's optical transport infrastructure under common network management, with

    the following powerful packet capabilities:

    MEF-defined E-Line, E-LAN, E-Tree, and E-Access Carrier Ethernet services

Statistical multiplexing for grooming and efficient transport of multiple 1GbE or 10GbE ports onto

    a single 10GbE port

Integrated MPLS-TP switching and connection-oriented transport

Service Availability Guarantees For point-to-point and ring configurations, Apollo blades

provide a range of automatic protection switching (APS) options like Y-protection, OCH1+1, and

OLP, which provide instantaneous cutover in case of a link failure for the highest level of service

availability. In a mesh network configuration, where it may be too complex or costly to provide APS,

Apollo nodes can communicate with each other autonomously, through a GMPLS control plane, to

provide dynamic restoration by reconfiguring existing resources. ASON provides sub-wavelength

level restoration using Apollo's ODU cross-connect, and WSON provides wavelength level restorationvia Apollo's CDC ROADMs. These mechanisms complement APS to guarantee end-to-end service

availability even in the most complex networks.

Low Operational Expense ECI's world-class LightSoft NMS provides intuitive point-and-click

end-to-end service creation and network management for the Apollo family of products, focused

on fast service responsiveness and low operational expenses. It covers configuration, service

provisioning, fault management, performance monitoring, and security control. As a single integrated

management system with rich northbound interfaces to OSS, LightSoft enables full control of all

NEs regardless of their manufacturer, while providing a view of the entire network at a glance.

A particularly powerful LightSoft feature is real-time processing of Apollo's Optical Network Control

Parameters (ONCP) for detailed performance monitoring of each Apollo light path, as well as rapid

    fault sectionalization, if required.

SDN Services Automation ECI's LightApp SDN services automation extends control to end

users for bandwidth-on-demand and services scheduling. With the Services Scheduling feature,

LightApp provides a calendar-like solution to reserve resources in advance, allowing explicit

scheduling of a network service (e.g. start time, end time, specific endpoints, required bandwidth)

for a specific amount of time. This responds to the requirement that services are required only at

certain times and for predictable durations, such as for periodic backups at night between data

centers. With Bandwidth-on-Demand, network resources are allocated dynamically according to

actual needs, saving network resources and dramatically improving network utilization.

In summary, the Apollo P-OTS family, with its dense, modular architecture, value-added data center

centric features and powerful supporting software for network management and end-user control, make it an ideal choice for profitable data center connectivity applications.
