Ways to apply for IPv4 within AP region• Rationing APNIC’s ‘last block’ of IPv4
– APNIC’s last remaining block is 103.0.0.0/8• Equal to 16,777,216 addresses
– Each member can only get up to 1,024 addresses (/22)
• Recycling returned IPv4 address space– Address space returned to IANA is re-distributed equally to all 5
Regional Internet Registries• Implemented 27 May 2014
– The re-distributed space received by APNIC is rationed like the ‘last block’• A member can only get up to 1,024 addresses (/22) from recycled pool

IPv4 address transfer
• Transfer is allowed through:– Merger & Acquisition– Needs based market transfer
• Needs based market transfer– The recipient (or buyer) must show evidence of need before a
transfer can be registered by APNIC– Policy designed by the community to prevent hoarding

• If needing a large number of IPv4 addresses, consider market transfer by following these steps:1. Get pre-approval from APNIC
• List on https://www.apnic.net/pre-approval-listing
1. Find a source (seller or broker)• Check [email protected] mailing list
1. Execute the transfer and register it at APNIC
• Have broker contract/agreement with a number of brokers– Agreed to comply with APNIC and other RIR policies to help people
find address space– http://www.apnic.net/transfer-brokers

Referral application
• If needing just a small amount of IPv4 addresses for your corporate customer, consider signing them up as an APNIC member– Get up to 1,024 addresses (/22) from last block – And up to 1,024 addresses (/22) from recycled pool
• Can grow network and customer base without depleting your IPv4 address pool
• As an existing member have knowledge of policies and procedures

Thoughts to consider for Address Leasing• How do you know that you’re the only one utilising that
address space?– What are the public protections for this?
• How do you preserve uniqueness?– RIRs cannot actively portray who actually uses the leased space

Technical Assistance Activities after Cyclone Pam• Undertook a basic needs assessment of affected APNIC
Members to identify ways APNIC could assist
• Contacted Government of Vanuatu (OGCIO office)– Coordinated ways technical assistance could be provided– Worked with them to facilitate equipment donations into Vanuatu
• Mailing list coordination of technical assistance– Opened by NSRC (around 45 organizations participating)
• Secondary DNS support to TVL will be provided for .vu
• Working with ISOC to ship five electrical generators
