About API 5L Pipes

The American Petroleum Institute specification API 5L is mostly used for the transportation of natural gas and petroleum.

These API 5L pipes are both seamless and welded. Their main purpose is the transportation of water, oil and gas from one location to another. The capability of the manufacturer ascertains the size of the pipe.

An API 5L pipe is manufactured by adhering to the specifications laid down by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 3183.

It standardizes the criteria for the materials, equipment and offshore structures for petrochemical, petroleum and natural gas industries.

PSL 1 and PSL 2 are the two (Product Specification Levels ) that have been recognized by the technical committee.

About (PSL1) Product Specification Level

The American Petroleum Institute (API) designates different specifications on selling line pipe.

The two specs under API 5L are PSL-1 and PSL-2. These specs cover seamless and welded steel line pipe from grades X42 through X80

PSL-1 is a loose standard quality for line pipe and includes pipes that are made of a standard quality.

About Seamless PipesSeamless (SMLS) pipe is formed by drawing a solid billet over a piercing rod to create the hollow shell. As the manufacturing process does not include any welding, seamless pipes are perceived to be stronger and more reliable


About LSAW Pipe & DSAW Pipe

In LSAW pipes, the welding is longitudinal, which means that steel (hot rolled coil plate) is rolled into a pipe and the seam is welded longitudinally.

Double submerged arc welded pipe (DSAW) derives its name from the welding process wherein the welding arc is submerged in flux while the welding takes place. Both inside and outside welds are required and are usually accomplished in separate processes, hence the word "double

CertificationAll pipes of will be supplied with relevant test certificates according to EN 10204. All pipes will be ultrasonic tested on pipe body and pipe end as per API 5L/ASTM standards. These pipes will be inspected and endorsed by recognized inspection agencies. Marking shall be In accordance with EN 10204 requirement and Mill standard. The quality assurance is ensured with the manufacturing test certificates (MTCs) as well as lab testing (physical & chemical) in presence of above mentioned third party inspection agencies.
