CAPE MEARES ROAD RELOCATION PROJECT
Summary of the Preferred Alternative’s Key Environmental Impacts and Benefits
Transportation Land Use, Forestland, and Utilities Recreation » Restores service on Cape Meares Loop Road
and access to locations north or south of the existing road closure
» Restores the secondary access to Netarts, Cape Meares, and Oceanside when Highway 131 and Bayocean Road are closed
» Provides access for emergency services and a tsunami escape route
» Converts approximately 16 acres of land zoned Forest to road right-of-way
» Approximately 28 acres of land used for right-of-way, when the existing road is closed, may be vacated or converted to another use
» Utility providers could locate new facilities within the new roadway right-of-way
» Restores visitor access from Cape Meares Loop Road to nearby recreation areas
» Reconnects the Three Capes Scenic Route
» Reopens Cape Meares Loop Road for the Oregon Coast Bike Route, which could be safer because of lower traffic volumes

CAPE MEARES ROAD RELOCATION PROJECT
Soils and Geology Wildlife and Vegetation Wetlands and Non-wetland Waters » Realignment of Cape Meares Loop Road
avoids the active landslide area that resulted in the existing closure
» Removal of approximately 12.34 acres of vegetation and habitat within the road construction disturbance corridor
» Removal of approximately 0.07 acre of habitat for marbled murrelet and 5.04 acres of habitat for northern spotted owl
» Minimal impacts to wetlands and streams
» Culverts would be installed at stream crossings
