The word ‘Apartheid’
The term apartheid comes from the Afrikaans word for "apartness”.

White Domination
• Afrikaners were the driving force behind the idea that black Africans should not only be segregated from whites, but should also have very few political rights.
• Racial discrimination was associated with the enactment of 1948 apartheid laws.

Examples of Apartheid Laws
• Immorality Act: made marriages between blacks and whites illegal.
• Native Service Contract: African labourer could not be absent from employer without permission.
• Native Representation Act: black Africans could not vote alongside Whites. They would vote separately for their own members of Parliament – who had to be White!
