A contract was awarded in April 1996 to

supply 67 AH Mk1 Apache aircraft to the MoD

for use by the British Army. The AH Mk1 is a

dedicated attack helicopter based on the

AH-64D which benefits from investment in its

configuration as a Longbow standard aircraft with

the addition of UK specific mission equipment for

enhanced self-defence and all-weather capability.

Westland is the UK Apache Prime

Contractor and co-ordinating Design Authority

and its main responsibilities include the following:

High supportability is a design

requirement for the Apache. Ease of access to

components, simplified diagnostics and repair

procedures and reduced ground support

equipment results from a MANPRINT

approach. The AH Mk1 Apache is based on the

experience of the US Army Apache which has

over 1,000,000 flying hours in war and peace.

High maintainability and reliability have

been achieved by planned upgrades

which are evident in availability rates

for deployed operations of over 90%

in Apache fleets across the world.

AH Mk1 Apache is the only attack helicopter

that has the system capability and payload to

execute all designated roles concurrently, giving a

Force Commander complete flexibility. Apache

has been shown to be the most operationally

effective attack helicopter.

GENERAL CONFLICTS

AH Mk1 Apache can destroy enemy targets

at long ranges reducing losses of both troops and

equipment to a minimum.

OPERATIONS OTHER THAN CONFLICTS

AH Mk1 Apache is equally effective in

operations short of war or peace-keeping

operations, characterised by political sensitivity

and the close proximity of combatants to the

civil population.

CRISIS RESPONSE

AH Mk1 Apache, with its multi-weapon

payload, 1,400 km ferry range and over 450 km

operational radius of action can quick ly deploy

from out of theatre to a potential flash point

to deter aggression. Apache can form an

over-the-horizon force of great flexibility and

potency whose excellent surveillance and

stand-off range can avoid direct confrontation

and enhance its survivability.

Michael Portillo MP

Secretary of State for

Defence

House of Commons

13th July 1995

“Apache will provide the British Army with a

world-class capability and offer the right combination

of mobility, rapid deployment, reach and fire-power.

Those who risk their lives for this country will be

provided with the helicopter that we believe can

destroy the highest number of enemy targets with

the least loss of life among crews.”

MULTI- ROLE PAYLOAD

10,000 lb Payload.

4 multi-purpose wing stations,

together with 2 wing-tip AAM

stations and the nose mounted

30mm gun, confer a concurrent

multi-role capability which allows an

immediate response to anysitua-

tion. Role changes are eliminated

with a load of 8 Hellfire, 38 70 mm

rockets, 1200 rounds of 30mm

and 4 AAM.

FIRE CONTROL RADAR

The Longbow mast mounted Fire

Control Radar (FCR) rapidly

detects, classifies, prioritises and

engages ground and air targets

in adverse weather, dust, smoke

and battlefield obscurants. This

unique system enables engage-

ments to be made outside threat

response range and inside threat

response times, significantly in-

creasing survivability. An integrated

Radio Frequency Interferometer

passivelygives identification of, and

precise bearing to, thr eat emitters

at verylong range.

MANPRINT COCKPIT

The highlyintegrated MANPRINT

cockpit, employing coloured Multi

Function Displays, provides en-

hanced situational awareness and

battle management to enable the

crew to fight t he aircraft effectively

in high threat situations. Full

redundancyis provided to enhance

flexibilityan d survivability.

COMMUNICATIONS

Apache provides the potential

for battlefield command/ attack

co-ordination through real-time

Joint/ All Arms Data sharing,

multimedia intelligence exchange

(including video) and an integrated

data modem.

AIR-TO-AIR MISSILES

4 Air-to-Air Missiles (AAM) maybe

carried on the wing tip stations.

DEFENSIVE AIDS SYSTEM

The BAESYSTEMS compr ehensive

Helicopter Integrated Defensive

Aids Suite (HIDAS) includes radar,

laser warnings and chaff and flare

dispenser.

ENGINES

Twin Rolls-Royce RTM 322 engines

provide the power and response

for worldwide operations. Inlet

particle separators protect the

engines in dust and sand and full

IR suppression guarantees a very

low IR signature.

BATTLE DAMAGE

TOLERANCE AND

CRASHWORTHINESS

Apache is fully protected against

12.7mm rounds and is highly

tolerant of 23mm HEI rounds,

ensuring a high probability of

mission success and crew survival.

Crashworthyseats, structure and

undercarriage, together with a wire

strike protection system, provide

further crew protection.

TARGET ACQUISI TION

AND DESIGNATION

Selectable FLIR, TV or direct view

optics in the stabilised Target

Acquisition and Designation Sight

enable targets to be acquired and

laser designated night and day. The

TADS is fully integrated with the

FCR for rapid target identification

with magnification up to 127 times.

PILOT NIGHT VISION

The Pilot Night Vision Sensor

(PNVS) and Integrated Helmet And

Display Sighting System (IHADSS)

provide a visuallycoupled, night and

adverse weather piloting system.

Flying and weapon aiming informa-

tion is presented “head-up” to the

pilot and the FCR terrain picture

may also be selected on the helmet

mounted display.

30MM GUN

30mm gun carries 1200 rounds

for rapid off-axis engagement of

both ground and air targets. The

turreted mounting enables the gun

to be used whilst continuing with the

primaryanti-armour engagement.

MAIN ROTOR

The four bladed low signature main

rotor provides high agility (including

negative ‘g’) and high levels of

tolerance of 23mm HEIrounds and

wire and tree strikes. Full main and

tail rotor deicing helps to provide a

24 hour worldwide capability.

ROCKETS

Up to 76 CRV7 70mm multi-

purpose rockets may be carried

for the engagement of area targets.

These rockets are effective against

light armour, soft skinned vehicles

and personnel.

NAVIGATION

The precision, all weather naviga-

tion system employs a Kalman filter

with GPS, inertial, doppler and air

data sensing to keep the crew con-

stantlyinformed of t heir location.

HELLFIRE MISS ILES

Apache carries up to 16 Laser

and fire-and-forget Radio Frequency

guided long range Hellfire missiles

for the precision engagement of

selected point targets under all

weather conditions. The dual war-

head defeats all known tank armour.

SUPPORTABILITY

Apache is designed for ease of

maintenance in the field with

built-in steps and working platforms,

ease of access, built-in test equip-

ment (for 90% of faults at 1st line),

simpler diagnostics and repair pro-

cedures (only10 tools required).

TRANSMISSION

The rugged main rotor gearbox

is designed for rapid removal

without removing the rotors and

rotor mast. A 30 minute ‘run-dry’

capabi li ty contributes to high

survivability.

UNDERCARRIAGE

The crashworthy, wheeled under-

carriage provides rapid ground and

ship mobility.

FUEL SYSTEM

2400 lbs of internal fuel enables

over 2 hours primary mission

endurance. Up to 4 long range

external tanks may be easily fitted

to increase combat radius/ time on

patrol or enable self deployment up

to 1500 km range.

TAIL ROTOR

Four bladed low signature tail rotor

provides powerful and precise yaw

control for agility, weapon aiming

and 45 knot cross-wind capability.

The tail rotor is located so as to

prevent ground strikes and mini-

mise hazards to personnel.
