APA Research Colloquium for Junior Investigators

Supported by the APA Foundation, Society of Biological Psychiatry, American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, and National Institute on Drug Abuse. The Research Colloquium for Junior Investigators is presented by APA in conjunction with the APA Council on Research’s Workgroup on Research Training. It includes a one-day, immersive, research experience for junior investigators in the beginner-level (Track 1) and intermediate-level (Track 2) of their research training in psychiatry. It is an important opportunity for mentorship, guidance, information on research career development and grantsmanship, and networking with senior research mentors in psychiatry (i.e., Drs. Charles Nemeroff, Kerry Ressler, Anissa Abi-Dargham, and Wilson Compton) and from the sponsoring organizations. Candidates whose research interests are similar to those listed below are encouraged to apply.

The two-day workshop on May 18-19, 2019 at the APA Annual Meeting in San Francisco will focus on the following five research areas:

1. Molecular, Translational, and Neuroscience Research 2. Clinical Psychobiology 3. Treatment from Psychopharmacology and Psychotherapy to Neural Strategies 4. Alcohol, Pain, and Drug Abuse Research 5. Health Disparities and Health Services Research

Deadline for Applications: November 30, 2018 Notification of Acceptance: January 31, 2019

Nomination Process

o Sponsoring institutions/organizations are responsible for nominating international candidates to participate in the Colloquium and ensuring that nominees adhere to the application requirements and deadline.

o Priority is given to individuals from countries that have not participated in the previous year. However, if space permits, individuals from countries that participated in the previous year may still be able to participate.

Funding

o Funding for international participants MUST be provided by the sponsoring institution/organization.

o Participation expenses include travel, accommodation, and APA Membership fee (if you are currently not a member), which must be covered by the sponsoring institution /organization. The Research Colloquium and the Early Research Career (ERC) Breakfast will be held outside of the regular APA Annual Meeting events; therefore participants will not be required to register for the APA Annual

Meeting to attend the Colloquium and the ERC Breakfast. However, if a participant plans to attend any of the APA Annual Meeting events, he/she is required to register for the APA Annual Meeting. In this instance, the APA Annual Meeting registration fee MUST be covered by you or your sponsor. (Note: APA members receive discounted registration rates to the APA Annual Meeting.)

Eligibility

o Beginner- or intermediate-level early research career psychiatrist investigators who are residents, fellows, or junior faculty.

o Should be an international member of the APA or be eligible to become an international member of the APA once notified of acceptance (Note: Psychiatry residents and trainees outside the U.S. and Canada may join the APA as International Resident-Fellow Members).

o Should have interest and potential in developing a research career in one or more of the five research areas listed above.

o Must be able to attend all Colloquium events, which include: A research area specific pre-Colloquium webinar (held between February

15, 2018 and April 15, 2018) and post-Colloquium webinar (Dates TBD); The one-day immersive Colloquium (May 6, 2018); and The APA Early Research Career Breakfast (held Tuesday morning after

the Colloquium) o Early research career psychiatrist investigators conducting minority health and

health disparities research in these subject areas are especially encouraged to apply.

o Past participants in the Research Colloquium are not eligible to apply. o Individuals with federal research awards (e.g., R01, R03 Awards) are not eligible. o Track 1 (Beginner-level) applicants MUST:

Be interested in psychiatric research. Be in the early stage of developing area of research interest. Be able to discuss a new or ongoing research interest, project, or proposal

in its early development phase within a small group session and present a poster on the research idea during the poster session to receive guidance from assigned team mentors.

o Track 2 (Intermediate-level) applicants MUST: Be interested in psychiatric research. Have a clear research area of interest, but need mentorship in moving

forward to develop a K-award project or fine-tuning their research portfolio. Be able to give a 30-minute oral presentation on an ongoing research

project or research protocol in a small group session and present a poster on the same research study during the poster session.

Application Requirements

o Updated Curriculum Vitae o Two-page statement describing current and proposed research projects. o One-page abstract of a study that is new, in progress, or completed. o If accepted to take part in the Colloquium:

Track 1 participants will be asked to briefly discuss their research idea/study in small groups of 5 mentees to 3-4 senior mentors and present it in a poster format.

Track 2 participants will be asked to present on their research idea/study in a formal 30-minute oral PowerPoint presentation and poster presentation formats.

o 250-word personal statement by the nominee describing how their attendance at the Colloquium will further his/her career goals.

o Sponsor's letter of recommendation, either from the nominee's research mentor or other faculty member, describing the nominee's potential as a researcher and potential to benefit from the Colloquium.
