Abstract

The abstract is a one-paragraph summary of the entire paper, not an introduction. The abstract

will not be indented. Many students prefer to write the abstract last. Writing it first may cause

students to feel constrained. After researching, writing and editing your paper, it should be fairly

easy to write a one-paragraph summary of it. A good rule of thumb is one sentence in the

abstract for every paragraph in the paper. Do not reuse sentences from the paper itself to write

the abstract.

The body of your paper starts here. Body paragraphs are indented one-half inch. This first

paragraph will be your introduction. Be sure to include a thesis statement in your intro – ideally

as the last sentence of this first paragraph.

References

The references page should be the first page after the conclusion of the body. Center the

word ‘References’ on the top line of the page. Reference entries should be listed in alphabetical

order by the authors’ name. If an item appears on the reference page, it should be cited at least

once. Make sure the name in the citation matches the name of the author in the reference entry.
